The spin rotation parameter R has been measured for elastic π − p scattering at 40 GeV/ c , at four momentum transfers t ranging from −0.19 to −0.52 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The average value within this interval is R π − p = -0.200± 0.023. The resulting constraints on the πN scattering amplitudes are discussed. The experiments also yields an average value for K − p scattering, R K − p scattering, R K − p = -0.16±0.16.

Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables CSS,CSL=CLS, CLL, and CNN for neutron-proton elastic scattering. These data were obtained with a free polarized neutron beam, a polarized proton target, and a large magnetic spectrometer for the outgoing proton. The neutron beam kinetic energies were 484, 567, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. Combining these results with earlier measurements allows the determination of the pure spin observables CSS, CLS, and CLL at 484, 634, and 788 MeV for c.m. angles 25°≤θc.m.≤180° and at 720 MeV for 35°≤θc.m.≤80°. These data make a significant contribution to the knowledge of the isospin-0 nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
Results for the pure spin observables. Statistical errors only. (Data for CSS and CNN at (172.5 to 177.5) and (167.5 to 172.5) degrees are uncertain because of the rapid angular dependence and possible errors in angle, and may be omitted from phase shift analyses.) The CNN data without errors are from a phase shift analysis of Arndt et al. (PR D45 (1992) 3395) [FA92] and were used to derive pure spin observables from the measured data.

Final results are presented for the spin-spin correlation parameters CSL and CLL for np elastic scattering with a polarized neutron beam incident on a polarized proton target. The beam kinetic energies are 484, 634, and 788 MeV, and the c.m. angular range is 80°-180°. These data will contribute significantly to the determination of the isospin-0 amplitudes in the energy range from 500 to 800 MeV.

Results are presented for the spin-spin correlation parameters CSS and CLS for free np elastic scattering at neutron beam kinetic energies of 484, 634, 720, and 788 MeV and c.m. angles between 25° and 80°. The measurements were performed with a polarized neutron beam and a polarized proton target. These are the first measurements of this type to be reported in the forward angular region with a free polarized neutron beam. The observables CSS and CLS are both small at all energies, except for CLS at 788 MeV, which is larger than phase-shift analysis predictions by more than one standard deviation for most of the measured points.

We have measured the spin-transfer parameters KLL, KSL, KLS, and KSS at 635 MeV from 50° to 178° c.m. and at 485 MeV from 74° to 176° c.m. In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

The mixed spin-spin correlation parameter Cσσ≈0.5CSS−0.8CSL for np elastic scattering was measured for incident-neutron-beam kinetic energies of 484, 634, and 788 MeV over the center-of-mass angular range 75°-180°. These Cσσ data are important for determining the I=0 nucleon-nucleon amplitudes and provide strong constraints on the phase-shift solutions. It was found that the P11, S13, and D13 isospin-0 partial waves are most strongly affected.

The spin correlation parameter C NN has been measured for n-p elastic scattering at 181 MeV. A comparison with predictions from various phase shift sets and potential models reveals sizeable deviations from the for the data Paris potential and Saclay phase shifts. For the Paris potential the deviations are directly related to an overprediction of the 3 D 2 phase shift parameter.

We present data of several rescattering observables measured inn p elastic scattering between 0.80 and 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the Saclay polarized frozen-spin proton target. Three different configurations of beam and target polarization directions were used: the observablesDonon andKonno were measured with the normal-normal spin configuration at eight energies;Nonkk,Dos″ok andKos″ko were determined with the longitudinal-longitudinal configuration at six energies;Nonsk,Dos″ok andKos″so with the sideway-longitudinal configuration at six energies. Part of the data was obtained with an unpolarized CH2 target where only the two spin-index polarization transfer parametersKos″ko andKos″so were determined. Data are compared with phase shift analyses predictions and with the LAMPF results at 0.788 GeV. Present results are the first measurements of rescattering observables above 0.80 GeV. The spin-rotation parameters A and R and the related spin-rotation angle β have been measured for π+p and π−p elastic scattering using protons polarized in the scattering plane. The pion-beam momenta are 427, 471, 547, 625, and 657 MeV/c and the angular range is −0.9≤cosΘc.m.≤0.3. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a scintillator hodoscope for the pions, and the Large Acceptance Spectrometer combined with the JANUS polarimeter for the recoil protons. The results are compared with the four recent πN partial wave analyses (PWA's). Our data show that the major features of these PWA's are correct. The A and R measurements complete our program of pion-nucleon experiments, providing full data sets at three of the above beam momenta. Such sets can be used to test the constraints in the PWA's or to obtain a model-independent set of πN scattering amplitudes.

The spin-spin correlation parameter C NN at 50° and 90° c.m. for elastic pp-scattering has been obtained in the energy range 0.69–0.95 GeV. C NN (50°) agrees well with these predictions and does not show any structure within the accuracy of the measurements.

The elastic cross section for proton proton scattering at 11.75 GeV/ c was measured at the Argonne ZGS using a 50% polarized target. In the range p ⊥ 2 =0.6 → 2.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 we obtained precise measurements of d σ d t(ij) for the ⇈ ⇊, and ⇅ initial spin states perpendicular to the scattering plane. We confirmed that the asymmetry parameter, A , decreases with energy in the diffraction peak, but is approximately energy-independent at large p ⊥ 2 . We found that the spin correlation parameter c nn acquires rather dramatic structure, and at large p ⊥ 2 seems to grow with energy.

At P ⊥ 2 = 0.5 we also measured the recoil spin and found that the 5 different cross sections were very unequal.

The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . R pp at 16 GeV/ c is close to the val obtained for R in π − p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. Equality of R pp ( s , t ) and R π p ( s , t ) is expected if Pomeron exchange dominates and if factorization holds. The t -dependence of R at 16 GeV/ c is consistent with weak helicity flip.

We have measured the Wolfenstein triple-scattering parameters R, D, and A′ at 1.9 GeV for p−p scattering at 90° in the c.m. system. We find that R=0.11±0.16, A′=−0.54±0.16, and D=0.91±0.21, where these parameters are defined in the c.m. system. The possibility of a vector character for the strong inter-actions is discussed. We conclude that neither a single vector-meson exchange nor a single pseudoscalar-meson exchange can account for the data. Spin effects are found to remain an important part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction at four-momentum transfer −t=1.8 (GeV/c)2.

We measured dσdt for p+p→p+p at 11.75 GeV/c using the zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized-proton beam and a 65% polarized-proton target. We obtained the spin-orbit asymmetry parameter A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Cm out to P⊥2=4.2 (GeV/c)2. We found that A drops smoothly towards zero, but that Cnn increases abruptly near P⊥2=3.6 (GeV/c)2, where the exp(−1.4P⊥2) component of elastic scattering becomes dominant. This suggests that large-P⊥2 "hard" elastic scattering may occur mostly when the two proton spins are parallel.

Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.

Using the new Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron polarized proton beam and our polarized proton target, we measured the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in 16.5-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering. We found an Ann of (6.1±3.0)% at P⊥2=2.2 (GeV/c)2. We also measured the analyzing power A in two independent ways, providing a good test of possible experimental errors. Comparing our new data with 12-GeV Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron data shows no evidence for strong energy dependence in Ann in this medium-P⊥2 region.

We have measured the spin-correlation parameters A00kk, A00ks, and A00ss in p−p scattering between 400 and 600 MeV using a longitudinally polarized beam and a butanol target polarized in the horizontal plane. Owing to the restrictive geometrical acceptance of the target, the polarization axis of the target was oriented at an angle α with respect to beam direction. The parameters A00kk and A00ks were therefore measured as a linear combination at 577, 536, 514, 494, and 445 MeV. These experiments were extended to the measurement of A00ks and A00ss by using a transversely polarized beam. We present the results, which are compared with phase-shift predictions.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in medium-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the 18.5-GeV/c Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron polarized-proton beam. We found sharp dips in both A and Ann, which occur at different P⊥2 values. The unexpected sharp structure in the spin-spin force occurs near P⊥2=2.3 (GeV/c)2 where the elastic cross section has no apparent structure.

We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann, in large-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the polarized-proton beam at the Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron. We also used our polarimeter to measure A at small P⊥2 at 13 GeV with good precision and found some deviation from the expected 1Plab behavior. At 18.5 GeV/c we found Ann=(−2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2. Comparison with lower-energy data from the Argonne Zero-Gradient Synchrotron shows a sharp and surprising energy dependence for Ann at large P⊥2.
