We report measured asymmetries as a function of polar scattering angle for the reactions p¯p→π−π+ and p¯p→p¯p, using a polarized proton target. The annihilation data, obtained at a p¯ momentum of 1.64 GeV/c, are the first asymmetry data to be collected for this channel. A fit of these data and published differential cross section data is made by a partial-wave expansion, and the results are compared with a previous analysis. The elastic scattering data, obtained at 1.64 and 2.55 GeV/c, are fitted with an eight-parameter strong-absorption model.

The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

We have measured the elastic cross section for pp, p¯p, π+p, π−p, K+p, and K−p scattering at incident momenta of 70, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 GeV/c. The range of the four-momentum transfer squared t varied with the beam momentum from 0.0016≤−t≤0.36 (GeV/c)2 at 200 GeV/c to 0.0018≤−t≤0.0625 (GeV/c)2 at 70 GeV/c. The conventional parametrization of the t dependence of the nuclear amplitude by a simple exponential in t was found to be inadequate. An excellent fit to the data was obtained by a parametrization motivated by the additive quark model. Using this parametrization we determined the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the nuclear amplitude by the Coulomb-interference method.

p p and pp elastic scattering differential cross sections are presented for momentum transfer 0.6< t <2.1 GeV 2 and √ s = 53 GeV. Measurements were made in the same apparatus at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The p p and pp results are in statistical agreement with one another over the entire t range, although the point at t =1.32 GeV 2 is 1.5 σ above the pp data. The p p points appear to have the same shape as the predictions of Donnachie and Landshoff but are significantly lower in magnitude for 0.9< t <1.5 GeV 2 .

Two high statistics measurements of antiproton-proton small-angle elastic scattering, at p = 233 MeV/ c and p = 272 MeV/ c , are presented. The measurements were carried out at the LEAR facility at CERN. By the Coulomb-nuclear interference method, values are obtained for the real-to-imaginary ratio ρ of the p̄p forward nuclear scattering amplitude and for its exponential slope b : ρ = + 0.041 ± 0.026 and b = 71.5 ± 4.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 233 MeV/ c and ρ = −0.014 ± 0.027 and b = 47.7 ± 2.7 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 272 MeV/ c . The method to derive these values is discussed in detail and so are the uncertainties contributing to their systematic error. The results are compared with predictions from forward dispersion relation calculations and with predictions from p̄p potential models.

The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

As the energy increases from 6.4 to 14 GeV the K ± p crossover moves to smaller values by 0.010 GeV 2 with a statistical error of 0.006 GeV 2 and a systematic uncertainty of 0.005 GeV 2 . The crossover positions at 10.4 GeV for π ± , K ± and p ± scale approximately with the interaction radii.

Separation has been made into annihilation and non-annihilation modes. Some implications of the data are discussed. Values of the slope and the real part of the forward scattering amplitude of the above reactions have been derived; the values obtained are in good agreement with dispersion relations.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

We present differential cross-sections for pp elastic scattering at eight laboratory momenta from 1.50 to 2.06 GeV/c. The data are analysed using an 8-parameter optical modelà la Frahn and Venter. However, the best representation of the differential cross-sections is obtained by combining the glory model with a parametrization of the scattering amplitude in terms of coherent exponentials. Both representations show the dominance of the partial wave with orbital angular momentum equal to four.

Proton-antiproton and proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001⩽| t |⩽0.06 GeV 2 for center-of-mass energy 52.8 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Using the known pp total cross section, a simultaneous fit to the pp̄ and pp differential cross sections yields the pp̄ total cross section; in addition, we obtain the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear-scattering amplitude and the nuclear-slope parameter for both pp̄ and pp. Our results show conclusively that the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and lend support to conventional theories in which the difference between the pp̄ and pp total cross section vanishes at very high energy.

The differential cross sections of the elastic p p reaction have been measured at 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.6 GeV/ c incident p momentum. The measurements have been performed at the CERN PS using a system of multiwire proportional chambers. The angular region covers scattering angles from 0 to ∼200 mrad. Interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes are used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude. These ratios are compared with theoretical predictions.

The elastic and inelastic\(\bar p\)p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is\(\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle= 2.71 \pm 0.14\). The\(\bar p\)p−pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 andf2A−−=−1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast\(\bar n\) to\(\bar p\) production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering was measured for centre-of-mass energies s =30.6, 52.8 and 62.3 GeV at the CERN Intersectung Storage Rings. In addition, proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at s =23.5 GeV . Using the optical theorem, total cross sections are obtained with an accuracy of about 0.5% for proton-proton scattering and about 1% for antiproton-proton scattering. The measurement of the interference of the Coulomb scattering and the hadronic scattering permits a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward hadronic scattering amplitude. Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering have been measured for centre-of-mass energies √ s = 30.7 and 62.5 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Antiproton-proton and proton-proton total cross sections are obtained using the optical theorem. The measurement of the Coulomb scattering and its interference with the nuclear scattering allows a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements for the nuclear slope parameter at √ s = 62.5 GeV. Our new results reinforce the conclusions drawn recently from our measurements at √ s = 52.8 GeV. Interactions of antiprotons were studied at a momentum of 3.6 GeV/c in a hydrogen bubble chamber. Particular attention was paid to single and multiple pion production without annihilation. Cross sections for the various pion-production channels are given. The total cross section for pion production without annihilation and not including strange-particle production is 18.6−3.3+2.4 mb. Single pion production is found to agree with the predictions of the one-pion-exchange model for small values of the four-momentum transfer. Double pion production in the reaction p¯p→pp¯π+π− agrees with the one-pion-exchange model for all values of the four-momentum transfer, if all possible diagrams are taken into account. The main contribution comes from events where a 32−32 pion-nucleon isobar-anti-isobar pair is produced. For these events the Treiman-Yang angular distribution and the decay angular distributions of the isobars are also in agreement with the one-pion-exchange model.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.
