Differential cross sections of p p forward elastic scattering were measured between 400 and 730 MeV/ c , and the real-to-imaginary ratio, ϱ, of the forward amplitude was deduced. We found that ρ increases from ∼ 0.1 to ∼ 0.4 in this momentum range. A dispersion-relation analysis shows the existence of a pole-like structure in the real part of the p p amplitude near threshold.

The polarization for the\(\bar pp\) elastic scattering was measured as a function of the centre-of-mass angle of scattering between 17° and 90° at the average incident momentum of 0.7 GeV/c by using doublescattering events in a bubble chamber. The average value of the polarization was found to be 0.23 ± 0.05. The angular dependence of the polarization obtained in this experiment was interpreted by the strong absorptive potential model for\(\bar {\mathcal{N}}{\mathcal{N}}\) interactions recently proposed.

Parity nonconservation in proton-proton scattering has been studied by measuring the angle-integrated longitudinal analyzing power A z . We found A z (13.6 MeV)=(−1.5±0.5)×10 −7 . The error includes uncertainties due to statistics and corrections, as well as upper limits on systematic effects. The experimental result is discussed with respect to recent theoretical calculations.

The polarization of scattered antiproton in\(\bar pp\) elastic scattering has been measured at the kinetic energy of 220MeV by means of double scattering in a bubble chamber. The polarizations obtained are 0.28±0.11, 0.46±0.12, 0.51±0.19 and 0.38±0.31 at the scattering angles 28°, 42°, 56° and 73° in the c.m. system, respectively. We report measured asymmetries as a function of polar scattering angle for the reactions p¯p→π−π+ and p¯p→p¯p, using a polarized proton target. The annihilation data, obtained at a p¯ momentum of 1.64 GeV/c, are the first asymmetry data to be collected for this channel. A fit of these data and published differential cross section data is made by a partial-wave expansion, and the results are compared with a previous analysis. The elastic scattering data, obtained at 1.64 and 2.55 GeV/c, are fitted with an eight-parameter strong-absorption model.

We report final results on the polarization parameter P in elastic scattering of π − , K − and antiprotons at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum. The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.

We report results from a measurement of antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering at √ s = 24.3 GeV in the range 0.001 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.06 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The measurement was performed at the CERN p p Collider by using silicon detectors to observe protons recoiling from a hydrogen cluster-jet target intercepting the stored p and p beams. Fits to the measured differential cross sections yield the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude ρ and the nuclear slope parameter b for both p p and pp. We find that the difference Δρ = ρ ( p p ) − ρ( pp ) = 0.031 ± 0.010 agrees with conventional fits and disagrees with the “odderon” fit designed to accommodate the recent UA4 measurement of ρ( p p) at 546 GeV.

The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

We have measured the elastic cross section for pp, p¯p, π+p, π−p, K+p, and K−p scattering at incident momenta of 70, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 GeV/c. The range of the four-momentum transfer squared t varied with the beam momentum from 0.0016≤−t≤0.36 (GeV/c)2 at 200 GeV/c to 0.0018≤−t≤0.0625 (GeV/c)2 at 70 GeV/c. The conventional parametrization of the t dependence of the nuclear amplitude by a simple exponential in t was found to be inadequate. An excellent fit to the data was obtained by a parametrization motivated by the additive quark model. Using this parametrization we determined the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the nuclear amplitude by the Coulomb-interference method.

We give cross sections for annihilation and non-annihilation reactions in p p interactions at 8.8 GeV. The non-annihilation data are compared with pp data from the same experiment. We compare data on resonance production and on the impact parameter structure of the final states in p p annihilation and non-annihilation and pp interactions. We investigate the charge structure of the 2 π + 2 π − π 0 final state, and find it consistent with a simple quark model.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

The differential scattering cross section is presented for p¯p elastic scattering at an incident laboratory momentum of 2.33 GeV/c based upon 11 758 events. The experiment was performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory using the 31-inch hydrogen bubble chamber and an electrostatically separated beam. The attempts to fit limited regions of the data are presented for different parametrizations. The parametrization which corresponds to two coherent interfering exponentials successfully reproduces a very large t region for the scattering.

p¯p elastic scattering at an incident beam momentum of 2.85 GeV/c is analyzed using 18 412 events. The simple exponential parametrization of the diffraction peak is found to be a poor representation of the data. Two other parametrizations are tried and the estimates of dσdt at t=0 and of the slope of the diffraction peak are found to differ significantly between various parametrizations. It is found that two coherent interfering exponentials are able to represent the differential cross section over the range 0.04≤|t|≤1.8 (GeV/c)2 with a χ2 probability of approximately 40%.

The high antiproton-proton luminosity obtained by using a target system consisting of a hydrogen gas-jet crossing a coasting beam of cooled antiproton circulating in one of the rings of CERN's ISR provides the possibility to measure low cross section reactions with very high precision. Elastic π±−p, K−−p, and p¯−p scattering cross sections have been measured using three different experimental arrangements covering the c.m. angular regions ∼20°-120°, ∼135°-169°, and ∼165°-180° at incident momenta from 6 to 17 GeV/c. In the region 130°-180°, only π±−p scattering was measured. In the angular region near 180°, the energy dependences and shapes of the π−p backward peaks were determined up to crossed-momentum transfers of u∼−2 (GeV/c)2. At all energies, the π+−p backward peak had a sharp dip at u=−0.13 (GeV/c)2, with no similar effect in the π−−p case. Nearly complete angular distributions of π−−p elastic scattering from 20° to 180° have been obtained at 6 and 10 GeV/c. These results at 6 and 10 GeV/c as well as at 8 GeV/c reveal a sharp dip in π−−p scattering at t=−3 (GeV/c)2. Several structures in the form of dips or shoulders were seen in the p¯−p angular distributions also, with less pronounced structure observed in K−−p scattering. At fixed momentum transfer, all cross sections when expressed as dσdt appear to be decreasing with increasing energy.

Two high statistics measurements of antiproton-proton small-angle elastic scattering, at p = 233 MeV/ c and p = 272 MeV/ c , are presented. The measurements were carried out at the LEAR facility at CERN. By the Coulomb-nuclear interference method, values are obtained for the real-to-imaginary ratio ρ of the p̄p forward nuclear scattering amplitude and for its exponential slope b : ρ = + 0.041 ± 0.026 and b = 71.5 ± 4.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 233 MeV/ c and ρ = −0.014 ± 0.027 and b = 47.7 ± 2.7 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 272 MeV/ c . The method to derive these values is discussed in detail and so are the uncertainties contributing to their systematic error. The results are compared with predictions from forward dispersion relation calculations and with predictions from p̄p potential models.

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.
