Neutron diffraction dissociation has been measured at the ISR in proton-neutron interactions at 37 GeV c.m. energy. The data were taken with the Split Field Magnet detector, during a short deuteron storage test run with colliding p-d beams. Differential mass and momentum transfer distributions are reported; the value of the total cross-section shows a weak s -dependence when compared to lower energy data.

Neutron-neutron interactions have been observed at the CERN ISR with deutron colliding beams. The double - diffraction dissociation process →(p π p − )( pπ − ) has been measured with the Split Field Magnet at √ s = 26 GeV detecting all final state particles, including the two spectator protons. Mass and t distributions are presented and compared with corresponding spectra observed in single neutron diffraction in the same energy range with supporting evidence for factorization. The cross-section of the process is 11.5±2.8 μ b and can be directly related to the corresponding value for double diffraction dissociation of protons in the same energy range.

This paper analyzes π−N→π−π−π+N events from Fermilab experiment E-580, using 200-GeV/c particles on a segmented target of plastic scintillator. Starting with 48 657 triggers, data-quality cuts and a cut on missing mass squared of M2<16 GeV2 lead to a final sample of 7205 events. The xF distribution of the 3π system shows almost all events in a sharp peak at xF=1, suggesting the presence of beam diffraction into three pions. The overall t’ distribution is fit to the sum of three exponential terms corresponding to coherent diffraction from carbon nuclei, diffraction from individual nucleons, and background. Cross sections per nucleon and exponential slopes are reported for each of the three components as a function of 3π effective mass. The cross section for diffraction from the nucleons in the target is 0.34±0.04 mb/nucleon. The cross section for coherent diffraction from carbon is 1.08±0.12 mb/nucleus. The exponential slope for diffraction is observed to decrease with increasing 3π effective mass. The fraction of coherent carbon diffraction in the total cross section is observed to decrease with increasing 3π effective mass. In the π−π+ effective-mass spectrum the ρ0(770) and f0(1270) are observed and their cross sections per nucleon are calculated. In the π−π−π+ effective-mass spectrum the A1−/A2− and A3− enhancements are observed and a cross section for the A3− is calculated.

A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D 0 → K − π + , D 0 → K − π + π + π − , and D + → K − π + π + . No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μ b per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

The results of a study of the reaction π-p→π-π-π+p at2 147 GeV/c carried out at the Fermilab Proportional Wire 30″ Bubble Chamber Hybrid Spectrometer are reported. More than 92% of the cross-section ((670±41) μb) for this reaction is contained in those for proton and pion diffraction dissociation. The cross-sections for pion diffraction events with three-pion invariant mass in given regions are in agreement with values obtained by extrapolation of fits to data at lower incidentpion momenta. ρ0π- events make an important contribution in the A1 and A2 mass regions, and the data are consistent with contributions from f0π- in the A3 mass region. The cross-section for proton diffraction events is in agreement with a smooth extrapolation of the data at lower momentum.

Results on the multiplicity structure of diffractively excited meson and proton systems in À+/K+p interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented for diffractive masses up to about 9 GeV. The energy dependence of the average charge multiplicity and the shape of the multiplicity distribution in terms of KNO-scaling and negative binomial distribution are investigated. The diffractive systems are compared toe+e−,lh and non-diffractivehh final states as suggested by modern approaches of the Pomeron-hadron collision. Systematic differences are found between diffractive meson and proton systems but also between diffraction and the reactions compared to.

The differential cross section for neutron-deuteron elastic scattering was measured for four-momentum transfers 0.3 < − t < 2.0 (GeV/c) 2 with incident neutron momenta between 6 and 12.5 GeV/c. The measurement was made with spark chambers at the Argonne ZGS. Results are compared with proton-deuteron elastic scattering at comparable energies as a test of isospin invariance in strong interactions and with the predictions of the Glauber multiple scattering theory. Very good agreement is found.

The differential elastic p−p scattering cross section was measured at 6 GeV/c at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron in the range P⊥2=0.60−1.0 (GeV/c)2 using a 65% polarized target and a 75% polarized proton beam of intensity 3 × 109 protons/pulse. The polarization of the recoil proton was simultaneously measured with a well calibrated carbon-target polarimeter. All three polarizations were measured perpendicular to the horizontal scattering plane. Our results indicate that P and T invariance are both obeyed to good precision even at our largest P⊥2. Parity invariance implies that the eight single-flip transversity cross sections are zero, so our data gives the magnitudes of the eight remaining pure spin cross sections where all spins are measured. We find that the four double-flip transversity cross sections are nonzero.

We measured dσdt for p↑+p↑→p+p from P⊥2=4.50 to 5.09 (GeV/c)2 at 11.75 GeV/c. We used a 59%-polarized proton beam and a 71%-polarized proton target with both spins oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. In these large-P⊥2 hard-scattering events, spin effects are very large and the ratio (dσdt)↑↑:(dσdt)↑↓ grows rapidly with increasing P⊥2, reaching a value of 4 at 90° (c.m.). Thus, hard elastic scattering, which is presumably due to the direct scattering of the protons' constituents, may only occur when the two incident protons' spins are parallel.

We have studied single diffraction dissociation ( p p→ p X ) in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s =1.8TeV, covering the ranges 3⪅ M X ⪅200 GeV and 0.05⪅| t |⪅0.11 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Parameterizing the production to be of the form dσ ( d t d M 2 X ) = (M 2 X ) −α exp (bt) , we obtain α = 1.13±0.07 and b = 10.5±1.8(GeV/ c ) −2 . The total single diffraction dissociation cross section is 2 σ SD =8.1±1.7 mb. Comparisons are made to previous lower energy data, and to an earlier measurement by us at the same energy.

The DIS diffractive cross section, $d\sigma^{diff}_{\gamma^* p \to XN}/dM_X$, has been measured in the mass range $M_X < 15$ GeV for $\gamma^*p$ c.m. energies $60 < W < 200$ GeV and photon virtualities $Q^2 = 7$ to 140 GeV$^2$. For fixed $Q^2$ and $M_X$, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with $W$, $d\sigma^{diff}_{\gamma^*p \to XN}(M_X,W,Q^2)/dM_X \propto W^{a^{diff}}$ with $a^{diff} = 0.507 \pm 0.034 (stat)^{+0.155}_{-0.046}(syst)$ corresponding to a $t$-averaged pomeron trajectory of $\bar{\alphapom} = 1.127 \pm 0.009 (stat)^{+0.039}_{-0.012} (syst)$ which is larger than $\bar{\alphapom}$ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The $W$ dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function $F^{D(3)}_2$ factorizes according to $\xpom F^{D(3)}_2 (\xpom,\beta,Q^2) = (x_0/ \xpom)^n F^{D(2)}_2(\beta,Q^2)$. They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of $\xpom F^{D(3)}_2$ with decreasing $\xpom$ and the weak dependence of $F^{D(2)}_2$ on $Q^2$ suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

Results on exclusive double diffraction dissociation in (N π ) and (N ππ ) final states are reported for neutron-neutron interactions at √ s = 26.4 GeV and for the proton-neutron interactions at √ s = 37.2 GeV. The data have been obtained at the CERN intersecting storage rings using split field magnet detector with proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron colliding beams. Factorization is shown to be verified to a very high degree in both mass- and t -differential cross-sections. We measured the differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c, with both initial spins oriented normal to the scattering plane. The analyzing power A shows significant structure with a large broad peak reaching about 24% near P⊥2=1.6 (GeV/c)2. The spin-spin correlation parameter Ann exhibits more dramatic structure, with a small but very sharp peak rising rapidly to about 13% at 90°c.m.. This sharp peak may be caused by particle-identity effects.

The energy dependence of the spin-parallel and spin-antiparallel cross sections for p↑+p↑→p+p at 90°c.m. was measured for beam momenta between 6 and 12.75 GeV/c. The ratio (dσdt)parallel:(dσdt)antiparallel at 90° is about 1.2 up to 8 GeV/c and then increases rapidly to a value of almost 4 near 11 GeV/c. Our data indicate that this ratio may depend only on the variable P⊥2, and suggests that the ratio may reach a limiting value of about 4 for large P⊥2.

The reaction K − n → K − π + π − n has been studied in the SLAC 82″ liquid deuterium bubble chamber with a beam momentum of 12 GeV/ c . Although the kinematic fit for this final state has only one constraint, nonetheless a reasonably pure sample has been obtained. The cross section for the reaction is 1.02 ± 0.10 mb. The process K − n → K ∗0 890 Δ − is observed with cross section 36 ± 9 μ b and t -slope of 10 ± 2 (GeV/ c ) −2 . A kaon diffraction dissociation sample has been obtained, although the Q-signal is not so strong as in experiments with proton targets. Neutron dissociation into n π + π − is also observed with similar properties to those of proton dissociation into p π + π − , but with a broader t -distribution.

A partial-wave analysis has been performed on the (K − π − π + ) system produced in the reaction K − p → K − π − π + p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the Q mass region it is found that the two dominant states, K ∗ π and Kπ, both in 1 + S wave, are produced with different polarisations, helicity being approximately conserved in the t -channel for K ∗ π and in the s -channel for Kπ. This is in contradiction with the assumption that the amplitude can be factorised into “production” and “decay” parts, and hence that the two amplitudes are fully coherent. The phase variation of the two states do not indicate simple resonance behaviour. It is concluded that the Q-mass enhancement is composite.

Differential cross sections for elastic p−p scattering have been measured at 285, 348, 398, 414, 455, 497, 530, and 572 MeV kinetic energy. The experiment was performed at the CERN synchrocyclotron, using multiwire proportional chambers placed directly in a proton beam. Scattering was observed for 1.5°≲θ≲10° in the laboratory system. The ratio αp of the real and imaginary parts of the non-spin-flip nuclear forward amplitude was derived from the interference between the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes. The values obtained are model-dependent, but in this energy range αp is positive and decreases with energy. Qualitatively good agreement with dispersion-relation predictions is observed.
