The accelerated polarized deuteron beam of Saturn II was used to measure the analyzing power for np elastic scattering at five energies. The left-right asymmetries ε = (L + R)/(L + R) for np and for pp elastic scattering were measured simultaneously by CH 2 − carbon subtraction using one of the beam-line polarimeters. The analyzing power A 00 n 0 (np) is given by the ratio ε np d / ε pp d multiplied by the known analyzing power for pp elastic scattering. Experimental evidence is consistent with the underlying assumption that in the kinetmatic region of the experiment the ratio of the np to pp analyzing powers for scattering of quasifree nucleons in deuterons is the same as for scattering of free neutrons and protons, respectively.

The ratio of the analysing powers for quasi-elastic pp scattering in carbon and for elastic scattering on free protons was measured fromT = 0.52 to 2.8 GeV by scattering of the SATURNE II polarized proton beam on carbon and CH2. It was found to have a maximum at about 0.8 GeV. The energy dependence for quasielastic scattering on carbon had not been measured before above 1 GeV. The observed effect was not expected from simple models.

The total cross section difference Δα L (pp) for proton-proton scattering with beam and target polarized longitudinally parallel and antiparallel, respectively, has been measured using the polarized proton beam from SATURNE II and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The beam polarization was reversed from pulse to pulse, and at each energy Δα L was measured for both signs of target polarization. The data below 800 MeV confirm the previously observed structures. The cross section difference is found to change by 8.0 ± 0.5 mb between 520 MeV and 760 MeV. At the higher energies the results show no indication for similar structures or for a change of the sign of Δα L .

The polarization in π + p → π + p and K + p → K + p has been measured at 6 and 12 GeV/ c in the four-momentum transfer interval 0.1 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 2.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 by scattering on protons of a polarized deuteron target. Comparison with existing results obtained with polarized proton targets shows good general agreement and no evidence for asymmetry effects due to the presence of the spectator neutron. The spin correlation parameter A00NN for 497.5 MeV proton + proton elastic scattering was determined over the center-of-momentum scattering angle region 23.1°–64.9 °. The new A00NN extend to more forward angles than existing A00NN and have significantly smaller statistical errors (±0.01–0.04). The A00NN are qualitatively described by recent phase shift analyses, but a quantitative shape and normalization discrepancy remains in the forward angle region. These new data provide important constraints for nucleon-nucleon spin-dependent amplitudes at forward angles which are used in theoretical models of nucleon-nucleus scattering.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

Measurements of the pp spin correlation coefficients Axx, Ayy, and Axz and analyzing power Ay for pp elastic scattering at 197.8 MeV over the angular range 4.5°–17.5° have been carried out. The statistical accuracy is approximately ±0.01 for Amn and ±0.004 for Ay, while the corresponding scale factor uncertainties are 2.4% and 1.3%, respectively. The experiment makes use of a polarized hydrogen gas target internal to a proton storage ring (IUCF Cooler) and a circulating beam of polarized protons. The target polarization (Q=0.79) is switched in sign and in direction (x,y,z) every 2 s by reversing a weak guide field (about 0.3 mT). The forward-scattered protons are detected in two sets of wire chambers and a scintillator, while recoil protons are detected in coincidence with the forward protons by silicon strip detectors placed 5 cm from the proton beam. The background rate from scattering by the walls of the target cell is (0.2±0.2)% of the good event rate. Analysis methods and comparisons with pp potential models and pp partial wave analyses are described.

Analyzing powers for πp elastic scattering were measured using the CHAOS spectrometer at energies spanning the Δ(1232) resonance. This work presents π+ data at the pion kinetic energies 117, 130, 139, 155, 169, 180, 193, 218, 241, and 267 MeV and π− data at 87, 117, 193, and 241 MeV, covering an angular range of 50°<~θc.m.<~180° at the higher energies and 90°<~θc.m.<~180° at the lower energies. Unique features of the spectrometer acceptance were employed to reduce systematic errors. Single-energy phase shift analyses indicate the resulting S11 and S31 phases favor the results of the SM95 phase shift analysis over that of the older KH80 analysis.

The spin analyzing power A in 28-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at P⊥2=6.5 (GeV/c)2 using a polarized proton target and a high-intensity unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result of (24±8)% confirms that the analyzing power is large and rising in the large-P⊥2 region.

The analyzing power, A, was measured in proton-proton elastic scattering with use of a polarized proton target and 28-GeV/c primary protons from the alternating-gradient synchrotron. Over the P⊥2 range of 0.5 to 2.8 (GeV/c)2, the data show interesting structure. There is a rather sharp dip at P⊥2=0.8 (GeV/c)2 corresponding to the break in the elastic differential cross section at the end of the diffraction peak.

We measured the analyzing power A out to P⊥2=7.1 (GeV/c)2 with high precision by scattering a 24-GeV/c unpolarized proton beam from the new University of Michigan polarized proton target; the target’s 1-W cooling power allowed a beam intensity of more than 2×1011 protons per pulse. This high beam intensity together with the unexpectedly high average target polarization of about 85% allowed unusually accurate measurements of A at large P⊥2. These precise data confirmed that the one-spin parameter A is nonzero and indeed quite large at high P⊥2; most theoretical models predict that A should go to zero.
Errors quoted contain both statistical and systematic uncertainties.
Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

We have measured the polarization for elastic scattering in the reaction π−p→π−p at 2.93 and 3.25 GeV/c using a polarized proton target and multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC's) with emphasis on large-angle scattering. Events were selected by fast scintillation-counter logic. Beam trajectories were measured with four MWPC's and the scattered-particle angles were measured with one or two MWPC's; elastic events were determined by coplanarity and angle-angle correlations. The polarization is in agreement with previous measurements below |t|=2.0 (GeV/c)2, and crosses from negative to positive near the secondary dip in the differential cross section dσdt. In the backward region, an energy dependence appears with the polarization being large and negative at 2.93 GeV/c and consistent with zero at 3.25 GeV/c.

A precise measurement of the analyzing power $A_N$ in proton-proton elastic scattering in the region of 4-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < |t| < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ has been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the 100 GeV/$c$ RHIC proton beam. The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude is predicted to generate a significant $A_N$ of 4--5%, peaking at $-t \simeq 0.003 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. This kinematic region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region. A possible hadronic spin-flip amplitude modifies this otherwise calculable prediction. Our data are well described by the CNI prediction with the electromagnetic spin-flip alone and do not support the presence of a large hadronic spin-flip amplitude.

The energy dependence of the pp elastic analyzing power has been measured using an internal target during polarized beam acceleration. The data were obtained in incident-energy steps varying from 4 to 17 MeV over an energy range from 0.5 to 2.0 GeV. The statistical uncertainty of the analyzing power is typically less than 0.01. A narrow structure is observed around 2.17 GeV in the two-proton invariant mass distribution. A possible explanation for the structure with narrow resonances is discussed.

Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.

Using the new Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron polarized proton beam and our polarized proton target, we measured the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in 16.5-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering. We found an Ann of (6.1±3.0)% at P⊥2=2.2 (GeV/c)2. We also measured the analyzing power A in two independent ways, providing a good test of possible experimental errors. Comparing our new data with 12-GeV Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron data shows no evidence for strong energy dependence in Ann in this medium-P⊥2 region.

We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in medium-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the 18.5-GeV/c Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron polarized-proton beam. We found sharp dips in both A and Ann, which occur at different P⊥2 values. We measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann, in large-P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using a polarized-proton target and the polarized-proton beam at the Brookhaven Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron. We also used our polarimeter to measure A at small P⊥2 at 13 GeV with good precision and found some deviation from the expected 1Plab behavior. At 18.5 GeV/c we found Ann=(−2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2. Measurement was made of dσdt for n↑+p↑→n+p at P⊥2=0.8 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2 at 6 GeV/c. The 6-GeV/c 53%-polarized neutrons from the 12-GeV/c polarized deuteron beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchroton were scattered from our 75%-polarized proton target. We measured the differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c, with both initial spins oriented normal to the scattering plane. The analyzing power A shows significant structure with a large broad peak reaching about 24% near P⊥2=1.6 (GeV/c)2. The spin-spin correlation parameter Ann exhibits more dramatic structure, with a small but very sharp peak rising rapidly to about 13% at 90°c.m.. This sharp peak may be caused by particle-identity effects.

The energy dependence of the spin-parallel and spin-antiparallel cross sections for p↑+p↑→p+p at 90°c.m. was measured for beam momenta between 6 and 12.75 GeV/c. The ratio (dσdt)parallel:(dσdt)antiparallel at 90° is about 1.2 up to 8 GeV/c and then increases rapidly to a value of almost 4 near 11 GeV/c. Our data indicate that this ratio may depend only on the variable P⊥2, and suggests that the ratio may reach a limiting value of about 4 for large P⊥2.

At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/J\ulich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ for c.m. scattering angles between 30$^o$ and 90$^o$. Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

Absolute pp-elastic-differential cross sections were measured at incident energies 492, 576, 642, 728, and 793 MeV from about 30° to 90° c.m. The total uncertainty was determined to be less than 1%, made possible by particle counting for beam normalization and extensive cross-checks of systematic effects. These new data are consistent with previous data above 600 MeV but have uncertainties about a factor of 10 smaller. Near 500 MeV these data are consistent with 90° data from TRIUMF, but differ significantly from similar data from PSI; the cause of this discrepancy is discussed.

Comparison is made with Stodolsky and Sakurai's ρ-exchange model and with the absorptive peripheral model.

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. The cross section does not exceed 2.1 mb and has no structure for Kπ masses from threshold up to 2.0 GeV.
Chew-Low extrapolation is used for evaluation of the K- P elastic cross section.
A simple, large-solid-angle apparatus, specially suited for the measurement of backward elastic scattering of medium-energy pions on protons and deuterons, is described. The method of analysis which reduces background and determines elastic events from a data sample of 185 MeV negative pions incident on a D 2 O target is discussed. Results for 141 MeV π + p and 185 MeV π − p backward cross-sections are also presented and compared with cross-sections calculated from known phase shifts.
