The spin-dependent observables N 0 s ″ kn , D 0 n 0 n and K 0 s ″ k 0 in pp elastic scattering were measured at nine energies between 0.84 and 2.1 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. The beam polarization was oriented longitudinally and the target polarization was oriented vertically. Precession of the recoil particle spin in the target holding field introduces a small contribution from other parameters. The present results for K 0 s ″ k 0 and D 0 n 0 n agree with our previous measurements of the same observables carried out in different beam and target spin configurations as well as with previously existing measurements. The observable N 0 s ″ kn had not been measured previously above 0.58 GeV. Below 1.3 GeV our data are compared with the predictions of the Saclay-Geneva phase shift analysis. The new results will considerably affect the phase shift analysis solutions and will contribute to their extension towards higher energies.

The np and the pp analyzing powers A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d were measured simultaneously using the SATURNE II polarized deuteron beam at 0.744 and 0.794 GeV/nucleon. The results for the pp observables coincide with the free pp elastic scattering data. We thus can assume that also the np analyzing power A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d are equal to those for scattering of free polarized neutrons. The np data cover the angular region 95°⩽ θ CM ⩽122°. Our results for A oono d (np) confirm the phase-shift analysis predictions but spin correlations A oonn d (np) and A oosk d (np) have never been measured in this energy region and will considerably affect the PSA solution. Present results allow conclusions about the angular dependence near the minimum of A oono (np) and A oonn (np) in the vicinity of 0.8 GeV.

ERRORS IN ELASTIC CROSS SECTIONS INCLUDE SYSTEMATIC ERRORS.
The real part of the isospin-even forward-scattering amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering has been determined at a pion energy of Tπ=55 MeV by measurement of the elastic scattering of positive and negative pions on protons within the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The value confirms the prediction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase-shift analysis for that energy. These phases have been used to determine the σ term of pion-nucleon scattering by means of dispersion relations, resulting in a value for σ which is in contradiction with chiral perturbation theory of QCD.
PI- P cross sections normalised to the Coulomb cross section taken from the Karlesruhe-Helsinki phase shift analysis (R. Koch, E. Pietarinen (NP A336(80)331).
The spin correlation parameter A oonn for pp elastic scattering was measured at 0.88, 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4 and 2.7 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. At the first two energies, the new measurements at θ CM < 50° complete our previous data from 45° to 90°. Between 1.3 and 2.7 GeV the measurements were performed in two overlapping angular regions covering together the CM angles from 28° (at the lower energies) or 18° (at the highest energy) to > 90°. At all energies above 1.3 GeV the angular distribution shows a dip at fixed four-momentum transfer − t ∼ 0.90 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The value of A oonn ( θ CM = 90°) decreases from A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.57 at 0.88 GeV to A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.35 at 2.7 GeV. However, the large value found at 1.8 GeV indicates that the energy dependence is not monotonic.

Results are reported concerning the charged-particle multiplicity distribution obtained in an exposure of the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC to a beam of 800 GeV protons at the Fermilab MPS. This is the first time that such data have been available at this energy. The distribution of the number n ch of charged particles produced in inelastic interactions obeys KNO-scaling. The average multiplicity is 〈 n ch 〉 = 10.26±0.15. For n ch ⩾8 the data can be well fitted to a negative binomial. The difference between the overall experimental multiplicity distribution and that resulting from the latter fit is in agreement with the contribution expected from diffractive processes.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

The accelerated polarized deuteron beam of Saturn II was used to measure the analyzing power for np elastic scattering at five energies. The left-right asymmetries ε = (L + R)/(L + R) for np and for pp elastic scattering were measured simultaneously by CH 2 − carbon subtraction using one of the beam-line polarimeters. The analyzing power A 00 n 0 (np) is given by the ratio ε np d / ε pp d multiplied by the known analyzing power for pp elastic scattering. Experimental evidence is consistent with the underlying assumption that in the kinetmatic region of the experiment the ratio of the np to pp analyzing powers for scattering of quasifree nucleons in deuterons is the same as for scattering of free neutrons and protons, respectively.

The total cross section difference Δα L (pp) for proton-proton scattering with beam and target polarized longitudinally parallel and antiparallel, respectively, has been measured using the polarized proton beam from SATURNE II and a frozen spin polarized proton target. Proton-antiproton and proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001⩽| t |⩽0.06 GeV 2 for center-of-mass energy 52.8 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Using the known pp total cross section, a simultaneous fit to the pp̄ and pp differential cross sections yields the pp̄ total cross section; in addition, we obtain the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear-scattering amplitude and the nuclear-slope parameter for both pp̄ and pp. Our results show conclusively that the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and lend support to conventional theories in which the difference between the pp̄ and pp total cross section vanishes at very high energy.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

In an experiment on K--proton interactions in a hydrogen bubble chamber, the cross sections and angular distributions have been studied for elastic and charge-exchange scattering, and charged sigma hyperon production in the momentum range 90-300 MeV/c. Good agreement is found with previous cross sections except for the charge-exchange channel where the new values are 60% larger. The production distributions of the charged sigma hyperons and the polarisation of the Sigma + hyperon clearly indicate that P waves are present down to about 150 MeV/c, much lower than previously reported.

This supports the dispersion relation prediction that σtot(p¯p) will start to rise above Elab≈200 GeV.

Proton-proton elastic scattering using 201- and 400-GeV/c extracted beams at Fermilab has been measured in the region 4.9<−t<14.4 GeV2. Contrary to predictions of diffraction models, there is no sign of a second dip or "break," and the slope A in the fit exp(At) is smaller than predicted. It drops from 1.5 to 0.8 GeV−2 over our t range. The shape of the t distribution can be fitted by the power law dσdt∝t−8.4 which is close to a quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) prediction of t−8. At fixed t the 201-GeV/c cross sections are about 2.3 times those at 400 GeV/c which is compatible with the QCD and constituent-interchange-model prediction that dσdt∝s−10 at fixed ts.
