The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

The polarization parameter in π±p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the range 2.50-5.15 GeV/c pion laboratory momentum and covering the range in t approximately from -0.2 to -2.0(GeV/c)2. The data show positive polarization for π±p scattering, having a dip near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and becoming relatively large at greater values of −t. The results for π+ and π− scattering are approximately equal in magnitude but of opposite sign. The data have been analyzed to separate the components, which are symmetric and antisymmetric with respect to pion charge, and to show both the t and s dependence of each part.

The results indicate the absence of u-channel dominance in the backward region, as was observed in the case of π+p scattering. Comparisons have been made with predictions of various phase-shift analyses which show that the agreement is generally very poor in the backward region.

Scattering of $\pi^-$ Mesons in the Momentum Range 0.643-{GeV}/$c$ to 2.14-{GeV}/$c$ From a Polarized Proton Target

The asymmetry in the scattering of π− mesons by polarized protons has been measured at 50 different momenta from 0.643 to 2.14 GeV/c. Results were obtained at values of cosθ ranging from approximately +0.9 to -0.95 in the c.m. system at each incident pion momentum. The pion beam was incident on a 7.6-cm-long crystal assembly of lanthanum magnesium nitrate, in which the hydrogen in the water of crystallization was polarized by the "solid effect." The total momentum spread of the beam was 10% (full width at half-height) and data were collected simultaneously in 4 momentum channels, each with 2½% full width at half-height. A gas Čherenkov counter was used to reject incoming electrons. Scattered particles were detected in scintillation counter arrays placed within the 10-cm gap of the polarized target magnet. Encoded information from each array was stored in the memory of a PDP-5 computer connected on-line to a fast electronic logic network. The computer was programmed to classify the events according to momentum and scattering angle and subdivide them into coplanar and noncoplanar categories. The latter provided a measure of the background. The results have been expressed in the form of an expansion in terms of first associated Legendre polynomial series and compared with the predictions of recent phase-shift solutions. It is concluded that although these analyses give satisfactory predictions of the general features of the results, no one solution gives complete agreement with the data above about 1.0 GeV/c.

Measurement of the Polarization in Large Angle $\pi^- P$ Elastic Scattering at 2.93-{GeV}/c and 3.25-{GeV}/c

We have measured the polarization for elastic scattering in the reaction π−p→π−p at 2.93 and 3.25 GeV/c using a polarized proton target and multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC's) with emphasis on large-angle scattering. Events were selected by fast scintillation-counter logic. Beam trajectories were measured with four MWPC's and the scattered-particle angles were measured with one or two MWPC's; elastic events were determined by coplanarity and angle-angle correlations. The polarization is in agreement with previous measurements below |t|=2.0 (GeV/c)2, and crosses from negative to positive near the secondary dip in the differential cross section dσdt. In the backward region, an energy dependence appears with the polarization being large and negative at 2.93 GeV/c and consistent with zero at 3.25 GeV/c.

The polarization parameter in π − p elastic scattering has been measured in the backward angular region at an incident momentum of 6 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the range of four momentum transfer u = 0 to −1 (GeV/ c ) 2 , and were obtained with a high intensity pion beam, a butanol polarized proton target, and arrays of scintillation counter hodoscopes. The polarization is different from zero, in contradiction to the prediction of the naive one trajectory Regge-exchange model. It increases positively with the four-momentum transfer u, reaching a maximum of about 0.4 at u ≈ −0.3 (GeV/c)2. It then decreases and becomes slightly negative beyond u ≈ −0.5 (GeV/c)2. A variety of baryon exchange models are briefly reviewed and none are found to be in complete agreement with all the experimental data.

Measurement of Particle and anti-Particle Elastic Scattering on Protons Between 6-GeV and 14-GeV

Differential cross sections in the t -range between 0.02 and 1.5 GeV 2 have been measured for the elastic scattering of particles and antiparticles on protons at 6.4, 10.4 and 14 GeV for K ± p and 10.4 GeV for π ± p and p ± p . Large statistics have been achieved and systematic uncertainties have been minimized. The relative systematic uncertainty between particle and antiparticle data is less than 0.5%. Accurate measurements of the position of the first crossover between particle and antiparticle differential cross sections have been performed. As the energy increases from 6.4 to 14 GeV the K ± p crossover moves to smaller values by 0.010 GeV 2 with a statistical error of 0.006 GeV 2 and a systematic uncertainty of 0.005 GeV 2 . The crossover positions at 10.4 GeV for π ± , K ± and p ± scale approximately with the interaction radii.

Measurement of pi-p Elastic Scattering at 180-degrees

We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

Pi-minus p elastic scattering at 2.26 gev/c

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.

The differential elastic scattering cross sections for negative pions on ; protons were measured at incident momenta of 1.51, 2.01, and 2.53 Bev/c with ; emphasis on the angular region outside the diffraction peak. The purpose of the ; experiment was to examine the behavior of the largeangle differential elastic ; cross section as a function of energy from the energy of the highest known ; resonance in the pion-nucleon system into the region where the total. cross ; sections appear to be approaching an asymptotic value. The experiment was ; performed at the Bevatron, using a luminescent chamber system to photograph the ; tracks of the scattered pion and the recoil proton from a liquid hydrogen target. ; A total of 2412 elastic scatterings were analyzed at 1.51 Bev/c, 1300 events at ; 2.01 Bev/c, and 1080 events at 2.53 Bev/c. From the existing data it may be ; noted that the backward bump, which has a maximum height of 2.1 mb/sr at 900 Mev ; and 1.1 mb/sr at 1020 Mev, is down to 0.4 mb/sr at 1.51 Bev/c (1.37 Bev), and is ; not present at 2.01 or 2.53 Bev/c. The angular distributions behind the ; diffraction peak at 2.01 and 2.53 Bev/c are rougly constant, decreasing from 0.18 ; mb/sr at 2.01 Bev/c to 0.125 mb/sr at 2.53 Bev/c. Although the data can be taken ; to suggest some oscillatory structure in this region, they are not inconsistent ; with an isotropic distribution that might be interpreted as evidence for an S-; wave scattering behind the diffraction peak. The energy dependence of the K−-nucleon total cross sections has been measured over the K− momentum range 0.98-3.98 Bev/c. K−−n cross sections were obtained by deuterium-hydrogen subtraction, with a correction for screening effects. There is evidence for structure in the T=0 K−-nucleon state in the momentum range 0.98-2.0 Bev/c. This structure is absent in the T=1 state. In addition, a measurement was made at 1.95 Bev/c of the angular distribution of the K−−p elastic scattering at small angles. The forward-scattering amplitude obtained from the data gives a ratio of real part to imaginary part 0.5±0.2 at 00. The corresponding ratio for π− mesons at this momentum was found to be 0.4−0.4+0.2. Measurements of the K−−p "elastic" charge exchange gives a cross section which falls from about 10 mb at 1 Bev/c to at most a few mb at 4 Bev/c.

Pion-Proton Elastic Scattering from 3 GeV/c to 5 GeV/c

Results of a spark chamber experiment on elastic scattering of pions on protons are presented and analyzed. The processes studied were π+p at 2.92 GeV/c, and π−p at 3.15, 4.13, and 4.95 GeV/c. The data are fitted to an exponential function of the four-momentum transfer, t, in several different ways in attempts to explore systematic energy and angular dependences. No shrinkage of the diffraction peak is seen in comparing the coefficients of a linear exponential fit for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2; at larger |t|, however, the cross section falls off with increasing energy. The large-angle differential cross section is examined for structure and is compared with all other large angle scattering data. The results are compared with proton-proton scattering data over the same energy range and substantial differences between the two processes are evident.

Backward pi- p elastic scattering at 3 and 4 gev/c

We have measured dσ du for π − p elastic scattering at 3 and 4 GeV c in the ranges −0.119⩽ u ⩽0.113 and −0.233⩽ u ⩽0.088, respectively. A fit of the form d σ /d u = A exp ( Bu + Cu 2 ) gives B = 4.34±0.42 and C = 7.0±3.5 at 4 GeV c with χ 2 = 5.7 for 9 degrees of freedom; the simpler form d σ /d u = A exp( Bu ) gives B = 3.7 ± 0.3 with χ 2 = 9.6. At 3 GeV c we confirm with high statistics the structures already observed.

Systematic Study of pi- p Backward Elastic Scattering Between 1.28-GeV/c and 3-GeV/c

We have measured the backward differential cross section in π−p elastic scattering at 31 momenta from 1.28 to 3.0 GeV/c. These measurements covered the center-of-mass angular range of 125°-178° corresponding to −0.570≲cosθc.m.≲−0.999. Considerable structure in the angular distribution is found. We compare these data with data from other experimets and to predictions made by the latest phase-shift solution. We find, in general, good agreement with other data in the few regions of overlap. The fits from the phase-shift solution do not accurately reproduce these data at low momenta below 1.9 GeV/c but give excellent agreement above this momentum.

Pi- p backward elastic scattering from 2.38 to 3.00 gev/c

This paper presents differential cross sections for backward π−p elastic scattering in the angular region −0.55≥cosθc.m.≥−0.98 for five incident momenta: 2.38, 2.50, 2.65, 2.80, and 3.00 GeV/c. The structure of the angular distribution undergoes a marked change over this momentum interval. A pronounced dip near 180°, which is seen for momenta ≲2.50 GeV/c, becomes a sharp peak at 2.80 and 3.00 GeV/c. A minimum in the cross section at cosθc.m.≃−0.7 is indicated at all momenta. In addition, a dip in the differential cross section appears at cosθc.m.≃−0.92 at 3.00 GeV/c. A good fit to the data from 2.1 to 3.0 GeV/c is obtained with a direct-channel resonance model.

Resonant behaviour in the coefficients of a Legendre polynomial expansion indicates G- or H-wave resonance. Further analysis using an energy-dependent parametrization of G- and H-waves shows the results to be compatible with the 7−/2 assignment for the , but equally acceptable solutions are obtained with the inclusion of an additional 9+/2 resonance contribution.

The reactions π−p→π−p and π−p→π−π0p for 1.7 GeV/c incident π− have been studied, in 3094 and 2244 interactions respectively, identified from 10 106 two-prong events measured in film exposed at the BNL 20 in. hydrogen bubble chamber. The differential elastic-scattering cross-section is found to show a first and second diffraction peak and a first diffraction minimum with indications of a second minimum and onset of a third maximum. The experimental curve has been fitted by a black-dise optical-model formula with radius (0.80±0.03) fm and by a differential cross-section computed from the Dirac equation depending on two ranges, 0.7 fm attractive imaginary and 0.4 fm repulsive. The dominant mode (∼40%) of the π−π0p production is through the two-body channel, π−p→ϱ−p. We find the following cross-sections: σ(π−p→π−p mb, σ(π−p→π−p mb. The differential rhomeson production cross-section shows a diffraction peak having a dependence (dσ/dt)(π−p→ϱ−p)=[(2.5±0.2) exp [(−5.3±0.5)t]] mb/(GeV/c)2, wheret is the squared four0momentum transfer between incoming and outgoing proton in (GeV/c)2, and a second diffraction maximum. It has been fitted by an optical-model formula for a bright ring of radius 0.80 fm and ring thickness 0.25 fm. The cross-section for σ(π−p→π−p was found to be (0.36±0.04) mb. From the inelastic data the Chew-Low dipion scattering cross-section has been computed, using various form factors. A form factor of unity is found to be acceptable.

Measurements of pi- p elastic scattering from 1.71 to 5.53 gev/c

The π−p elastic scattering differential cross section has been obtained at 18 incident momenta from 1.71 to 5.53 GeV/c. The measurements were taken over a limited range of squared four-momentum transfer t near the forward direction. The statistical accuracy and resolution of these data are comparable to, or better than, existing data. The parameter b in the expression dσdt=Aebt has been determined at each of our incident momenta, and a large (∼25%) enhancement in b as a function of momentum is observed at a c.m. energy of ∼2290 MeV. The relation of this bump in b with the well-established bump in the total π−p cross section at ∼2200 MeV is discussed.

Amalgamation of Meson - Nucleon Scattering Data

We present a series of numerical and statistical techniques for interpolating and combining ("amalgamating") data from meson-nucleon scattering experiments. These techniques have been extensively applied to πp elastic and charge-exchange differential-cross-section and polarization data in the resonance region. The amalgamation is done by fitting a momentum- and angle-dependent interpolating surface to the data over a moderately narrow momentum range, typically ∼150 MeV/c, using the interpolating surface to shift data in a narrower central momentum region into fixed angular bins at a predetermined central momentum, and then statistically combining the data in each bin. The fitting procedure takes into account normalization errors, momentum calibration errors, momentum resolution, electromagnetic corrections, threshold structure, and inconsistencies among the data. The full covariance matrix of the amalgamated data is calculated, including contributions of statistical error, systematic error, and interpolation error. Techniques are presented for extracting from the covariance matrix information on the collective statistical fluctuations which correlate the errors of the amalgamated data. These fluctuations are described in terms of "correlation vectors" which facilitate the use of the amalgamated data as input for resonance-region phenomenology.

Fluctuations in Large Angle $\pi^\pm p$ Elastic Scattering
