A systematic study has been made of the reactions pp→pp and pp→pN* in the angular range from θlab=10∘ to θc.m.=90∘ at 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 GeVc. An orthogonal dispersion magnetic spectrometer detected protons from interactions in hydrogen with momentum transfer (−t) in excess of 0.5 (GeV)2. Well-defined peaks in the missing-mass spectra occurred at average N* masses of 1240±6, 1508±2, and 1683±3 MeV with average full widths of 102±4, 92±3, and 110±4 MeV, respectively. Below 2400 MeV no other significant enhancements were found. The N* production cross sections dσdt near θc.m.=90∘ are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of the statistical model. For each isobar the differential cross section at fixed energy varies as exp(−vv0), where v≡[−tu(t+u)]; v0 varies systematically with energy and tends toward the same value (≈0.4 GeV2) for each isobar at the upper limit of our energy range.

ON INVESTIGATING ENERGY DEPENDENCE OF CROSS-SECTION FOR pi- MESON ELASTIC SCATTERING ON PROTONS IN THE INTERVAL 33-GeV/c TO 55-GeV/c

Inspire Record 80729 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32174

The π − p differential elastic scattering cross sections have been measured for eight momenta in the 33–55 GeV/ c range. The energy dependence of the slope and of the total elastic scattering cross sections has been determined experimentally. The results are compared with the known data. The experimental data are compared both with the Regge pole model and with the quasi-potential one.

Observation of Structure in Elastic pp Scattering at 100-GeV/c and 200-GeV/c

Phys.Lett.B 59 (1975) 197-200, 1975.

The elastic differential cross section for pp scattering has been measured up to a momentum transfer of ‖ t ‖ = 3(GeV/ c ) 2 at 100 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c incident momenta. The 200 GeV/ c measurements shows a diffractive like dip at ‖ t ‖ = 1.5 GeV/ c while no such dip is seen in the 100 GeV/ c data.

Results are presented on the measurement of 200-GeV/c π−p elastic scattering at −t from 0.8 to 11 (GeV/c)2. As −t is increased, dσdt falls by ∼6 decades to a prominent dip at 4 (GeV/c)2, followed by a second maximum and than a slow decrease with increasing −t.

The elastic scattering of 3.6 GeV/ c π + mesons by protons has been studied in a hydrogen bubble chamber experiment. The elastic cross section has a measured value of 7.07 ± 0.20 mb. The forward diffraction peak has been fitted in the region 0.05 ≦ − t ≦ 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 by a form (d σ /d t ) = Ae Bt , where A = 46.5 ± 1.8 mb/(GeV/ c ) 2 and B = 6.85 ± 0.20 (GeV/ c ) −2 . From this fit and the optical theorem, the magnitude of the ratio of real to imaginary forward amplitude is 0.39 ± 0.06, in reasonable agreement with dispersion relation calculations and simple Regge model predictions.

We have measured the reactions π±p→π±p and π+p→K+Σ+ at 5.0 GeV/c in the region 2.2<−t<3.5 (GeV/c)2. We find the minimum cross section of the dip at −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2 in π+p elastic scattering to be 0.16 ± 0.05 μb/GeV2. The π−p differential cross section exhibits similar structure, while the π+p→K+Σ+ channel shows a steady decline in cross section as |t| increases. The polarization of the Σ+ remains large and positive to at least −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2.

Pi- p Elastic Scattering at 3.92-GeV/c

π−p elastic scattering is studied at an incident π− beam momentum of 3.92 GeV/c. From the analysis of about 38 000 elastic events we give the differential cross-section for −t>0.06 (GeV)2. The known structures at −t ≈ 0.8 and 2.8 (GeV)2 are seen. An additional possible structure is present in the backward hemisphere.
