Analyzing powers for πp elastic scattering were measured using the CHAOS spectrometer at energies spanning the Δ(1232) resonance. This work presents π+ data at the pion kinetic energies 117, 130, 139, 155, 169, 180, 193, 218, 241, and 267 MeV and π− data at 87, 117, 193, and 241 MeV, covering an angular range of 50°<~θc.m.<~180° at the higher energies and 90°<~θc.m.<~180° at the lower energies. Unique features of the spectrometer acceptance were employed to reduce systematic errors. Single-energy phase shift analyses indicate the resulting S11 and S31 phases favor the results of the SM95 phase shift analysis over that of the older KH80 analysis.
Measurement of the PI+ analysing power at 117 MeV.. The data were collected in the conventional mode and may be independently floated within the systematic error.
Measurement of the PI+ analysing power at 139 MeV.. The data were collected in the conventional mode and may be independently floated within the systematic error.
Measurement of the PI- analysing power at 87 MeV.. The data were collected in the conventional mode and may be independently floated within the systematic error.
Angular distributions of the analyzing powers for π+p→ and π−p→ elastic scattering have been measured in a single-scattering experiment employing a polarized proton target. Measurements were obtained for pion energies of 98, 139, 166, 215, and 263 MeV. The addition of these data to the existing πp database significantly reduces the uncertainties in all S and P phase shifts for πp reactions over the delta resonance.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 98 MeV.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 139 MeV.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 166 MeV.

K−−p interactions in the Columbia-BNL 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber were studied at nine momenta from 594 to 820 MeVc. The results for elastic-scattering and zero-prong-plus-V0 events are presented here. Differential cross sections are given for the K−p, K¯0n, and Λπ0 final states. A fit to the K¯N channels was obtained which shows the effects of a 32− resonance at 1701 MeV. This energy is appreciably displaced from the peak in the inelastic cross section.

Results are reported based on a study of π − p interactions at 147 GeV/ c in the FERMILAB 30-inch Proportional Wire Hybrid Bubble Chamber System. We have measured the topological cross sections and separated two-prong elastic and inelastic channels. In addition, we have extracted leading particle cross sections using the increased momentum resolution of the downstream proportional wire chambers. We have compared our results with experiments and predictions of a simple fragmentation hyphothesis.

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

A sample of 2657 proton-proton scattering events at 1.48 BeV has been analyzed. The elastic cross section is 19.86 mb, and the elastic scattering is consistent with a simple opaque-disk optical model with R=0.91 F and 1−a=0.864. The dominant feature of the inelastic scattering is the production of the (3/2, 3/2) isobar. The reaction p+p→p+n+π+ is interpreted satisfactorily in terms of the one-pion-exchange model.

Results are presented of an investigation of the polarization of recoil protons appearing in elastic 1r+ -p scattering through an angle of 140 ± 8° in the c.m.s. at an energy of 307 ± 5 Mev. A polarization value P 1 = -0.19 ± 0.17 has been deriver from the data on the magnitude of the left-right asymmetry in elastic scattering of recoil protons on photographic emulsion nuclei. Phase shifts satisfying the indicated polarization value and consistent with the differential cross section for elastic scattering of 71"+ -mesons by protons are given by Eq. (1). Problems connected with the use of various phase shift sets for analysis of the experimental data are discussed.

Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.
