The asymmetry A LL for pp elastic scattering has been measured at 650 and 800 MeV in the region of Coulomb-nuclear interference. The real part of the double-spin-flip amplitude extracted from these data completes our determination of the forward pp scattering amplitudes at these energies. Comparison with the predictions of forward dispersion relations reveals a discrepancy in the spin-dependent channels at 650 MeV.

The large-angle analyzing power A in proton-neutron elastic scattering at 2, 3, and 6 GeV/c with use of the polarized proton beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron and a liquid deuterium target have been measured. The measurements, the first at high energy, show that A is large (20-40%) and negative over much of the angular range and shows no decrease with incident energy, unlike the earlier data at smaller angles.

The ratio of the analysing powers for quasi-elastic pp scattering in carbon and for elastic scattering on free protons was measured fromT = 0.52 to 2.8 GeV by scattering of the SATURNE II polarized proton beam on carbon and CH2. It was found to have a maximum at about 0.8 GeV. The energy dependence for quasielastic scattering on carbon had not been measured before above 1 GeV. The observed effect was not expected from simple models.

A polarized proton beam extracted from SATURNE II and the Saclay polarized proton target were used to determine the spin correlation parameter Aoosk and the rescattering observablesKos″ so; Dos″ok, Nos″sn, andNonsk at 1.80 and 2.10 GeV. The beam polarization was oriented perpendicular to the beam direction in the horizontal scattering plane and the target polarization was directed either along the vertical axis or longitudinally. Left-right and up-down asymmetries in the second scattering were measured. A check for the beam optimization with the beam and target polarizations oriented vertically provided other observables, of which results forDonon andKonno at 1.80, 1.85, 2.04, and 2.10 GeV are listed here. The new data at 2.10 GeV suggest a smooth energy dependence of spin triplet scattering amplitudes at fixed angles in the vicinity of this energy.

Differential cross sections have been measured in the region of small forward angles (between 0 and ∼40 mrad) for the elastic scattering reactions pp → pp at 4.2, 7.0 and 10.0 GeV /c and p p → p p at 4.2, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 GeV /c . The maximum momentum transfer is ∼0.025 GeV 2 at the lowest and ∼0.10 GeV/c at the highest incident momentum. Values of the slope and the real part of the forward scattering amplitude of the above reactions have been derived; the values obtained are in good agreement with dispersion relations.

Making use of the interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear interaction, we have determined the magnitude and sign of the real part of the scattering amplitude near t = 0. The K ± p real parts have been used in a dispersion relation to derive the value of the KNΛ coupling constant.

The depolarization parameter for pp inclusive scattering at an incident momentum of 6 GeV/c was measured. The D parameter for inclusive scattering indicates the dominance of natural-parity exchange at small t, except in the case of N*(1232) production, where π exchange is more important. D for elastic scattering has also been measured. This parameter shows a small decrease from unity with increasing momentum transfer.

A direct experimental reconstruction of the five complex pp elastic-scattering amplitudes has been performed at 447, 497, 517, 539, and 579 MeV. The reconstruction is done over the c.m. angles from 38° to 90° and is based on either 11 or 15 spin observables depending on the angular range. The reconstructed amplitudes are presented and compared to phase-shift analysis. A smooth energy behavior is observed for the amplitudes.

Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

Elastic scattering and single-pion production in pp collisions at 6.92 BeVc were studied in the BNL 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections for the different final states are given. The reaction pp→nN1238*(pπ+) with σ=1.9±0.3 mb is analyzed and is in agreement with the modified one-pion-exchange model. Single-pion production can be explained as due mainly to two channels: (a) pp→N1238*(pπ+)n, and (b) pp→p(nπ+) or pp→p(pπ0), where the (nπ+) and (pπ0) pairs are in an I=12 state.

Polarization and differential cross-section data at 16 momenta between 0.86 and 2.74 GeV/ c are presented. (Preliminary data on some of the momenta have been published earlier.) In an energy-independent phase-shift analysis from threshold up to 2.5 GeV/ c , resonant-like as well as non-resonant solutions are found for the P 3 wave. An helicity flip-non-flip decomposition of the partial waves partly supports the indications found in the analyses of other reactions that the pomeron is built up mainly from s -channel helicity non-flip contributions.

The accelerated polarized deuteron beam of Saturn II was used to measure the analyzing power for np elastic scattering at five energies. The left-right asymmetries ε = (L + R)/(L + R) for np and for pp elastic scattering were measured simultaneously by CH 2 − carbon subtraction using one of the beam-line polarimeters. The analyzing power A 00 n 0 (np) is given by the ratio ε np d / ε pp d multiplied by the known analyzing power for pp elastic scattering. Experimental evidence is consistent with the underlying assumption that in the kinetmatic region of the experiment the ratio of the np to pp analyzing powers for scattering of quasifree nucleons in deuterons is the same as for scattering of free neutrons and protons, respectively.

The total cross section difference Δα L (pp) for proton-proton scattering with beam and target polarized longitudinally parallel and antiparallel, respectively, has been measured using the polarized proton beam from SATURNE II and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The cross section difference is found to change by 8.0 ± 0.5 mb between 520 MeV and 760 MeV. At the higher energies the results show no indication for similar structures or for a change of the sign of Δα L .

Toward the goal of experimentally determining pp elastic scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a linear combination of triple-spin correlation parameters and also a linear combination of spintransfer parameters over the |t| range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A horizontally polarized beam (S direction) was obtained by precessing the spin of the polarized beam from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron using a superconducting solenoid. The target protons were polarized vertically (N direction) and the polarization of the recoil protons was measured with a carbon polarimeter. The results are consistent with the amplitude corresponding to π exchange being almost real and positive.

The pp total, elastic, and all the inelastic cross sections were measured at 11 momenta in the range 0.9–2.0 GeV/c. No clear structure was observed in their momentum dependences. The momentum dependence of the total cross section agrees quite well with the result of a phase-shift analysis by Arndt. Our measurement of the ppπ 0 and pnπ + cross sections served to normalize the earlier systematic but relative and extrapolated measurements of these cross sections over a narrower momentum range. Calculations by König and Kroll based on a pion exchange model including the effect of an I = 1 dibaryon did not fit the single-pion production cross sections.

We have measured the spin-correlation parameters A00kk, A00ks, and A00ss in p−p scattering between 400 and 600 MeV using a longitudinally polarized beam and a butanol target polarized in the horizontal plane. The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . R pp at 16 GeV/ c is close to the val obtained for R in π − p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. Equality of R pp ( s , t ) and R π p ( s , t ) is expected if Pomeron exchange dominates and if factorization holds. The t -dependence of R at 16 GeV/ c is consistent with weak helicity flip.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

The differential cross section of K − p and K + p elastic scattering has been measured at 4.2, 7 and 10 GeV/ c in the very forward region of scattering angles. The measurements have been made at the CERN PS by means of multiwire proportional chambers and counters. The region of momentum transfers t is 0.001 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.10 GeV 2 at the highest momentum and 0.001 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.03 GeV 2 at the lowest. Over these regions the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes reach their maximum interference. We have used a parametrisation of the above amplitudes to determine the value of the real part of the nuclear forward scattering amplitude. pp interactions at 11 momenta in the range 0.9 to 2.0 GeV/ c have been studied. The elastic angular distributions, covering the c.m. angular range 22°–90°, agree in general with Hoshizaki's phase-shift analysis which shows the looping 1 D in and 3 F 3 amplitudes in the Argand diagram. About 80% of pn π + events come from the n Δ ++ state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the density matrix elements of the Δ ++ show no momentum or angular dependence. A large fraction of pp π 0 events also come from the p Δ + state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the Δ + density matrix elements is similar to that for the case of Δ ++ .
