We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

Differential cross sections have been measured for π − p elastic scattering at laboratory momenta in the range 1.2 to 3.0 GeV/ c for the c.m. range 0.97 > cos θ ∗ > −0.98 . The corresponding mass range is 1.78 to 2.56 GeV/ c 2 . The data was obtained from a counter experiment in which the scattered pions and protons were detected in coincidence by arrays of scintillation counters.

In an exposure of the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a separated π+ beam at π+ momenta of 2.35 BeV/c (center-of-mass energy E*=2.30 BeV), 2.62 BeV/c (E*=2.41 BeV), and 2.90 BeV/c (E*=2.52 BeV), we have observed production of the ω0, ρ0, and η0 mesons. The production of the ω0, ρ0, and η0 is often accompanied by simultaneous production of the N*++. The momentum transfer in ω0 and ρ0 production is characteristic of peripheral collisions and suggests a single-particle exchange for the production mechanism. The decay distributions for the ω0, ρ0, and the ρ+ demonstrate the importance of modifying the single-particle-exchange model to include absorptive effects. An upper limit on the two-π decay of the ω0 is set at 2%. The width of the η0 is found to be less than 10 MeV. Elastic-scattering distributions are presented.

The total cross section difference Δα L (pp) for proton-proton scattering with beam and target polarized longitudinally parallel and antiparallel, respectively, has been measured using the polarized proton beam from SATURNE II and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The beam polarization was reversed from pulse to pulse, and at each energy Δα L was measured for both signs of target polarization. The data below 800 MeV confirm the previously observed structures. The cross section difference is found to change by 8.0 ± 0.5 mb between 520 MeV and 760 MeV. At the higher energies the results show no indication for similar structures or for a change of the sign of Δα L .
ERRORS INCLUDE UNCERTAINTY IN THE BEAM POLARIZATION.
Results on the elastic K − π − scattering have been obtained from a study of the K − π − system in 15 000 events of the type K − p→K − π − p π + at a K − beam momentum of 4.25 GeV/ c . The on-mass-shell values of the spherical harmonic moments of the K − π − scattering angular distribution and the K − π − elastic cross section have been obtained by extrapolation to the pion pole. From these values we determined the s- and p-wave phase shifts δ 0 3 and δ 1 3 as a function of the effective mass of the K − π − system between threshold and 1.25 GeV/ c 2 . The value of | δ 0 3 | is smaller than 17° for all mass values and the existence of a p-wave cannot be neglected. At m K − π − = 1.18 GeV/ c 2 there are two solutions for the phase shifts. On the average, the cross section of the K − π − elastic scattering over the region of the effective mass considered amounts to approximately 2.5 mb.
The errors are statistical.
The differential elastic scattering cross sections for negative pions on ; protons were measured at incident momenta of 1.51, 2.01, and 2.53 Bev/c with ; emphasis on the angular region outside the diffraction peak. The purpose of the ; experiment was to examine the behavior of the largeangle differential elastic ; cross section as a function of energy from the energy of the highest known ; resonance in the pion-nucleon system into the region where the total. cross ; sections appear to be approaching an asymptotic value. The experiment was ; performed at the Bevatron, using a luminescent chamber system to photograph the ; tracks of the scattered pion and the recoil proton from a liquid hydrogen target. ; A total of 2412 elastic scatterings were analyzed at 1.51 Bev/c, 1300 events at ; 2.01 Bev/c, and 1080 events at 2.53 Bev/c. From the existing data it may be ; noted that the backward bump, which has a maximum height of 2.1 mb/sr at 900 Mev ; and 1.1 mb/sr at 1020 Mev, is down to 0.4 mb/sr at 1.51 Bev/c (1.37 Bev), and is ; not present at 2.01 or 2.53 Bev/c. The angular distributions behind the ; diffraction peak at 2.01 and 2.53 Bev/c are rougly constant, decreasing from 0.18 ; mb/sr at 2.01 Bev/c to 0.125 mb/sr at 2.53 Bev/c. Although the data can be taken ; to suggest some oscillatory structure in this region, they are not inconsistent ; with an isotropic distribution that might be interpreted as evidence for an S-; wave scattering behind the diffraction peak. We measured d σ d t(90° cm ) for ↑+ p ↑→ p + p from 1.75 to 5.5 GeV/ c , using the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized proton beam and a 70% polarized proton target. We found that the spin-spin correlation parameter. A nn , equals 60% at low energy, then drops sharply to about 10% near 3.5 GeV/ c , and remains constant up to 5.5 GeV/ c .
