Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. The jet cross section is fully corrected for losses and biases, and compared with the predictions of a model based on quantum chromodynamics. Both the absolute cross section and the inclusive charged-particle distributions inside and outside the jet are in qualitative agreement with the model.
The cross section for the reaction p¯N→μ+μ−X with muon pairs in the mass range 4<M<9 GeV/c2 and xF>0 was measured to be σ=0.104±0.005±0.008 nb/nucleon. The distributions dσdxF and M3dσdM were compared to the QCD-improved Drell-Yan model and to calculations including first-order QCD corrections, with use of deep-inelastic structure functions. Excellent agreement with the data was obtained if the calculations were multiplied by factors of 2.45 and 1.41, respectively.
Measurements of the differential cross section for the inclusive production of high-energy π0's are reported for the reactions π±p→π0X at a laboratory momentum of 14 GeV/c. The kinematic range covered, in terms of the Feynman scaling variable x and the transverse momentum P⊥, is 0.25≤x≤1.0 and 0≤P⊥≤0.7 GeV/c. Two spectrometers, both employing large NaI(Tl) crystals, are used to detect the π0's and to identify them with a mass resolution of 17 MeV (full width at half maximum). The results are in accord with the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation, which regards the measured reactions, in the kinematic range covered, as examples of disfavored fragmentation.
Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. Absolute measurements of the elastic electron-proton cross section have been made with a precision of about 4% for values of the square of the four-momentum transfer, q2, in the range 6.0 to 30.0 F−2 and for electron scattering angles in the range 45° to 145°. To within the experimental errors, it is found that the charge and magnetic form factors of the proton have a common dependence on q2 when normalized to unity at q2=0, and that an accurate representation of the behavior of the form factor and that of the cross sections themselves can be given in terms of a three-pole approximation to the dispersion theory of nucleon form factors.

We report on measurements of charged pion production cross sections at θ ≅ 50°, p T ≅ 3–9 GeV / c and √ s = 45 GeV , taken with the Split Field Magnet Detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Together with previous data at √ s = 62 GeV , this allows the calculation of the exponent n assuming a power law dependence p n T . Values of n ≈ 8 are found at low x T = 2 p T /√ s which drop to about 7 at x T ≈ 0.3. The measured values of π + /π − rise with x T and approach ≈ 2 at x T ≈ 0.3. A first-order QCD calculations is reasonably consistent with the data.
We report evidence for the production of the charged D ∗ mesons in pp̄ collisions at s = 540 GeV . The search was confined to the charged particle fragments of hadronic jets, which are expected to be predominantly gluon jets in this experiment. The fragmentation function and production rate for D ∗ in jets of average transverse momentum of 28 GeV/ c are given.
Based on a sample of 22 four-prong D 0 / D 0 decays produced in hydrogen by 360 GeV/ c π − , we present the following new results: mean lifetime τ = (3.5 −0.9 +1.4 ) x 10 −13 s ; production cross section for x F > 0.0, σ = (10.3 ± 3.5) ωb ; the D → K ± π ± π + π − branching ratio = (7.1 ± 2.5)%.
The ratios of high p T charged kaon to pion production cross sections at √ s = 45 and 62 GeV are presented. The values of the K ± π ± ratios are essentially independent of both √ s and x T = 2p T √s and are compatible with a strangeness suppression factor λ = 0.55. By contrast, the K − π − values fall with x T suggesting a gluonic origin of K − . QCD calculations agrees with the measurements.
The inclusive production of ϱ 0 mesons in pp collisions has been measured at five c.m. energies from √ s = 23.6 to 63.0 GeV. The cross sections and the production spectra as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are discussed.
We present results from an experiment studying the production of single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p ⊥ (transverse momentum) in 200 GeV/ c interactions on a beryllium target. We give a detailed discussion of the ambiguities in the jet definition. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The events show evidence for the coplanar structure suggested by constituent models, and the momentum distributions of charged particles give strong support to a simple quark-quark scattering model.
The inclusive spectra for p p collisions at 22.4 GeV/ c are investigated. We show that the transverse momentum distributions resemble those in high-energy pp interactions and discuss the influence of annihilation processes on the p T 2 distributions. The invariant inclusive cross section for pions in the central region is found to be 28 ± 1 mb. A charge asymmetry is indicated by the y ∗ spectrum in the central region, the asymmetry parameter having the value 0.15 ± 0.01. Finally, we estimate the upper limit of the diffraction dissociation of the beam particle to be 3.68 −0.15 +0.45 mb.
Inclusive ϱ 0 and f(1270) production are analysed in π + p collisions at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c . The ϱ 0 cross section increases with energy such that the ϱ 0 /π − ratio remains constant. Emphasis is laid on cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and of the Feynman x variable. The ϱ 0 's can be attributed to two sources: some ϱ 0 's are centrally produced, but there is a pronounced forward peak. The distribution of leptons coming from ϱ 0 decay is discussed.

Interactions initiated by 3-Bev protons of the Brookhaven Cosmotron were studied by photoemulsion technique. With appropriate criteria, 115 events are attributed to interactions of the incident beam protons with hydrogen nuclei (∼55%) and with bound protons of other nuclei (∼45%). A detailed analysis allowed the subdivision of the 115 events in categories, according to the number of π mesons (N>~0) produced in the collision. The ratio of elastic scattering to the total number of events was estimated to be σelσtotal=0.20−0.07+0.04. The observed cross section for pure elastic scattering is σel=8.9±1.0 mb. The percentages of single, double, triple, and quadruple π-meson production are respectively: 34−20+22; 35.6−23+20; 9.6−4+6; ∼1.0+3.5. Among the 20 most probable cases of single π-meson production—the estimated ratio of π+ to π0 is σπ+σπ0=5.3−1.4+0.3. The experimental results are not in agreement with the Fermi statistical-model theory (in particular the lower limit for the experimental ratio of triple to single production is given by σ3σ1>∼110 in contrast with the predicted ratio σ3σ1=167) but are not inconsistent with the Peaslee excited-state-model theory.
This paper reports experimental findings on the Dirac (F1) and Pauli (F2) form factors of the proton. The form factors have been obtained by using the Rosenbluth formula and the method of intersecting ellipses in analyzing the elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections. A range of energies covering the interval 200-1000 Mev for the incident electrons is explored. Scattering angles vary from 35° to 145°. Values as high as q2≅31 f−2 (q=energy−momentumtransfer) are investigated, but form factors can be reliably determined only up to about q2=25 f−2. Splitting of the form factors is confirmed. The newly measured data are in good agreement with earlier Stanford data on the form factors and also with the predictions of a recent theoretical model of the proton. Consistency in determining the values of the form factors at different energies and angles gives support to the techniques of quantum electrodynamics up to q2≅25 f−2. At the extreme conditions of this experiment (975 Mev, 145°) the behavior of the form factors may be exhibiting some anomaly.

We have measured the production of massive muon pairs in hadronic collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). A clear signal of production of the ϒ resonance by π + of 200 GeV/ c and π − of 200 and 280 GeV/ c on a platinum target is observed.
Data from a study of electron pairs produced in pp collisions (√ s = 5 and 63 GeV) are used to extend measurements of the scaling function down to m /√ s ≈ 0.07 (4.5 < m < 19 GeV). The dilepton continuum can be described by the scaling formula (fx475-1)
Data obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV are presented on correlations between momentum analysed forward π − , K − and p and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. The data show that significant correlations are present over the whole rapidity range for all three types of negative particles. The dependence on various kinematic variables suggests a cluster mechanism for the production of particles. In this picture, pions would be produced in clusters emitted in the fragmentation region while K − and p emanate from non-leading clusters.
Data, obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV, are presented on inclusive and semi-inclusive correlations between forward emitted neutrons and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. A total absorption spectrometer was used to detect the neutrons and to measure their energy. Significant correlations are observed over the whole rapidity range. The data suggest that neutrons result from the decay of clusters emitted in the fragmentation region.

We have measured the single-particle inclusive cross sections for p+p→π±+X, K±+X, p+X, p¯+X in the low-p⊥ region (≲ 1.5 GeV/c) as a function of the radial scaling variable XR in p−p collisions at 100, 200, and 400 GeV at Fermilab. The measured π+π− and K+K− ratios are shown to be remarkably similar to the same ratios which have recently been measured at large p⊥ at 90° in the center-of-mass system.

The relative yields of kaons and protons compared with the yield of pions at highpT and polar angles θ away from 90° (in the range from 10° to 45°) are presented forpp, dd, and αα interactions at a centre-of-mass energy\(\sqrt {s_{NN} }= 31\) GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. The measured particle ratios depend on the atomic mass numberA of the beam particles and on θ. TheA dependence of the ratios becomes stronger for largerpT and is more pronounced at smaller polar angles.
We present stdies of events triggered on two high-pT jets, produced inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at\(\sqrt s \)=63 GeV, using a large solid angle calorimeter. The cross-section for producing two jets is measured in the dijet mass range 17–50 GeV/c2. A high-statistics sample of dijet events, where each jet has transverse energy above 10 GeV, is used to study the structure of jets and the associated event. We find the longitudinal fragmentation function to be similar to that of jets emerging frome+e− collisions but considerably harder than that observed at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS)\(p\bar p\) Collider. A steepening of the fragmentation function is observed when increasing the jet energy. Studies of the charge distribution in jets show that these predominantly originate from fragmenting valence quarks. The transverse energy and particle flows are presented as functions of the azimuthal distance from the jet axis.
We present a study of leading protons and antiprotons inp-nucleus and\(\bar p\)-nucleus on Be, Cu, Ag, W, and U targets. The experiment was performed at the CERN-SPS at a beam energy of 120 GeV. For all targets a suppression of secondary antiprotons with respect to protons is observed. The difference between the\(\bar p\) andp spectra increases with decreasing χ-values and the effect is stronger for heavier nuclei. The features of the data are qualitatively consistent with multiple-collisions modesls. The data are analysed in terms of a dual parton model which gives a satisfactory description of leadingp and\(\bar p\) spectra.
