Production of Bc+ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is studied with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0  fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production cross sections times branching fractions between the Bc+→J/ψπ+ and B+→J/ψK+ decays is measured as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity in the regions 0<pT<20  GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. The ratio in this kinematic range is measured to be (0.683±0.018±0.009)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurements are presented of the lifetimes of the ${\mathrm {B}^0}$ , $\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s}$ , $\mathrm {\Lambda }_\mathrm {b} ^0$ , and $\mathrm {B}_\mathrm {c}^+$ hadrons using the decay channels ${\mathrm {B}^0}\!\rightarrow \! \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {K^{*}(892)}{}^{0}$ , ${\mathrm {B}^0}\!\rightarrow \! \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {K^0_S}$ , $\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s} \!\rightarrow \! \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\pi ^+}\mathrm {\pi ^-}$ , $\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s} \!\rightarrow \! \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\phi (1020)}$ , $\varLambda _\mathrm {b}^0\!\rightarrow \!\mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\Lambda }^{0}$ , and $\mathrm {B}_\mathrm {c}^+ \!\rightarrow \!\mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\pi ^+}$ . The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 $\,\text {fb}^\text {-1}$ , was collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ . The ${\mathrm {B}^0}$ lifetime is measured to be $453.0 \pm 1.6\,\text {(stat)} \pm 1.8\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ in $\mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {K^{*}(892)}{}^{0}$ and $457.8 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 2.8\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ in $ \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {K^0_S}$ , which results in a combined measurement of $c\tau _{{\mathrm {B}^0}} = 454.1 \pm 1.4\,\text {(stat)} \pm 1.7\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ . The effective lifetime of the $\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s}$ meson is measured in two decay modes, with contributions from different amounts of the heavy and light eigenstates. This results in two different measured lifetimes: $c\tau _{\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s} \rightarrow \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\pi ^+}\mathrm {\pi ^-}} = 502.7 \pm 10.2\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.4\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ and $c\tau _{\mathrm {B}^0_\mathrm {s} \rightarrow \mathrm {J}/\psi \mathrm {\phi (1020)}} = 443.9 \pm 2.0\,\text {(stat)} \pm 1.5\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ . The $\mathrm {\Lambda }_\mathrm {b} ^0$ lifetime is found to be $442.9 \pm 8.2\,\text {(stat)} \pm 2.8\,\text {(syst)} \,\upmu \text {m} $ . The precision from each of these channels is as good as or better than previous measurements. The $\mathrm {B}_\mathrm {c}^+$ lifetime, measured with respect to the ${\mathrm {B}^{+}}$ to reduce the systematic uncertainty, is $162.3 \pm 7.8\,\text {(stat)} \pm 4.2\,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.1\,(\tau _{{\mathrm {B}^{+}}})\,\upmu \text {m} $ . All results are in agreement with current world-average values.

The second- and third-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics of charged particles produced in pPb collisions, at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 8.16 TeV, are studied over a wide range of event multiplicities. Multiparticle correlations are used to isolate global properties stemming from the collision overlap geometry. The second-order "elliptic" harmonic moment is obtained with high precision through four-, six-, and eight-particle correlations and, for the first time, the third-order "triangular" harmonic moment is studied using four-particle correlations. A sample of peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV that covers a similar range of event multiplicities as the pPb results is also analyzed. Model calculations of initial-state fluctuations in pPb and PbPb collisions can be directly compared to the high precision experimental results. This work provides new insight into the fluctuation-driven origin of the $v_3$ coefficients in pPb and PbPb collisions, and into the dominating overall collision geometry in PbPb collisions at the earliest stages of heavy ion interactions.

A detailed study of pseudorapidity densities and multiplicity distributions of primary charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions, at $\sqrt{s} =$ 0.9, 2.36, 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV, in the pseudorapidity range $|\eta|<2$, was carried out using the ALICE detector. Measurements were obtained for three event classes: inelastic, non-single diffractive and events with at least one charged particle in the pseudorapidity interval $|\eta|<1$. The use of an improved track-counting algorithm combined with ALICE's measurements of diffractive processes allows a higher precision compared to our previous publications. A KNO scaling study was performed in the pseudorapidity intervals $|\eta|<$ 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5. The data are compared to other experimental results and to models as implemented in Monte Carlo event generators PHOJET and recent tunes of PYTHIA6, PYTHIA8 and EPOS.

We report on the inclusive production cross sections of ${\mathrm{J}/\psi }$ , ${\psi (\mathrm{2S})}$ , $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (1S), $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (2S) and $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (3S), measured at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector in $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8$  TeV. The analysis is based on data collected at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb$^{-1}$ . Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ and rapidity y, over the ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ ranges $0<{p_\mathrm{T}}<20$  GeV/c for ${\mathrm{J}/\psi }$ , $0<{p_\mathrm{T}}<12$  GeV/c for all other resonances, and for $2.5<y<4$ . The cross sections, integrated over ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ and y, and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are $\sigma _{{\mathrm{J}/\psi }} = 8.98\pm 0.04\pm 0.82$   $\upmu $ b, $\sigma _{{\psi (\mathrm{2S})}} = 1.23\pm 0.08\pm 0.22$   $\upmu $ b, $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(1S)}} = 71\pm 6\pm 7$  nb, $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(2S)}} = 26\pm 5\pm 4$  nb and $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(3S)}} = 9\pm 4\pm 1$  nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. These values agree, within at most $1.4\sigma $ , with measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration in the same rapidity range.

The production of J/ψ and mesons in pp collisions at TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The J/ψ and mesons are reconstructed in the μ (+) μ (−) decay mode and the signal yields are determined with a fit to the μ (+) μ (−) invariant mass distributions. The analysis is performed in the rapidity range 2. 0 < y < 4. 5 and transverse momentum range 0 < p ( )T( ) < 14 (15) GeV/c of the J/ψ mesons. The J/ψ and production cross-sections and the fraction of J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays are measured as a function of the meson p (T) and y.

$\pi ^{0}$ and $\eta $ meson production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

Eur.Phys.J. C78 (2018) 263, 2018.
Inspire Record 1620477 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.79044

An invariant differential cross section measurement of inclusive $\pi ^{0}$ and $\eta $ meson production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$  TeV was carried out by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The spectra of $\pi ^{0}$ and $\eta $ mesons were measured in transverse momentum ranges of $0.3<p_{ \text{ T }} <35$   $\text{ GeV/c }$ and $0.5<p_{ \text{ T }} <35$   $\text{ GeV/c }$ , respectively. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations using fragmentation functions DSS14 for the $\pi ^{0}$ and AESSS for the $\eta $ overestimate the cross sections of both neutral mesons, although such calculations agree with the measured $\eta /\pi ^0$ ratio within uncertainties. The results were also compared with PYTHIA 8.2 predictions for which the Monash 2013 tune yields the best agreement with the measured neutral meson spectra. The measurements confirm a universal behavior of the $\eta /\pi ^0$ ratio seen for NA27, PHENIX and ALICE data for pp collisions from $\sqrt{s}=27.5$  GeV to $\sqrt{s}=8$  TeV within experimental uncertainties. A relation between the $\pi ^{0}$ and $\eta $ production cross sections for pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$  TeV is given by $m_{ \text{ T }}$ scaling for $p_{ \text{ T }} >3.5$   $\text{ GeV/c }$ . However, a deviation from this empirical scaling rule is observed for transverse momenta below $p_{ \text{ T }} <3.5$   $\text{ GeV/c }$ in the $\eta /\pi ^0$ ratio with a significance of $6.2\sigma $ .

Observation of correlated azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics in pp and pPb collisions at the LHC

The CMS collaboration Sirunyan, Albert M ; Tumasyan, Armen ; Adam, Wolfgang ; et al.
2017.
Inspire Record 1626103 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.79667

The azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) in 8.16 TeV pPb data are extracted via long-range two-particle correlations as a function of event multiplicity and compared to corresponding results in pp and PbPb collisions. Using a four-particle cumulant technique, $v_n$ correlations are measured for the first time in pp and pPb collisions. The $v_2$ and $v_4$ coefficients are found to be positively correlated in all collision systems. For high multiplicity pPb collisions an anticorrelation of $v_2$ and $v_3$ is observed, with a similar correlation strength as in PbPb data at the same multiplicity. The new correlation results strengthen the case for a common origin of the collectivity seen in pPb and PbPb collisions in the measured multiplicity range.

Jet charge is an estimator of the electric charge of a quark, antiquark, or gluon initiating a jet. It is based on the momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of the jet constituents. Measurements of three charge observables of the leading jet in transverse momentum pT are performed with dijet events. The analysis is carried out with data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The results are presented as a function of the pT of the leading jet and compared to predictions from leading- and next-to-leading-order event generators combined with parton showers. Measured jet charge distributions, unfolded for detector effects, are reported, which expand on previous measurements of the jet charge average and standard deviation in pp collisions.

A study of the associated production of a $\mathrm{Z} $ boson and a charm quark jet ( $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} $ ), and a comparison to production with a $\mathrm{b} $ quark jet ( $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{b} $ ), in $\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 $\,\text {TeV}$ are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ , collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The $\mathrm{Z} $ boson candidates are identified through their decays into pairs of electrons or muons. Jets originating from heavy flavour quarks are identified using semileptonic decays of $\mathrm{c} $ or $\mathrm{b} $ flavoured hadrons and hadronic decays of charm hadrons. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region with two leptons with $p_{\mathrm {T}} ^{\ell } > 20\,\text {GeV} $ , ${|\eta ^{\ell }|} < 2.1$ , $71< m_{\ell \ell } < 111\,\text {GeV} $ , and heavy flavour jets with $p_{\mathrm {T}} ^{\text {jet}} > 25\,\text {GeV} $ and ${|\eta ^{ \text {jet}}|} < 2.5$ . The $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} $ production cross section is measured to be $\sigma (\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow \mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} + X) \mathcal {B}(\mathrm{Z} \rightarrow \ell ^+\ell ^-) = 8.8 \pm 0.5\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.6\,\text {(syst)} \,\text {pb} $ . The ratio of the $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} $ and $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{b} $ production cross sections is measured to be $\sigma (\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow \mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} + X)/\sigma (\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow \mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{b} + X) = 2.0 \pm 0.2\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.2\,\text {(syst)} $ . The $\mathrm{Z} + \mathrm{c} $ production cross section and the cross section ratio are also measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the $\mathrm{Z} $ boson and of the heavy flavour jet. The study of the strength and behavior of the antikaon-nucleon (K¯N) interaction constitutes one of the key focuses of the strangeness sector in low-energy quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this Letter a unique high-precision measurement of the strong interaction between kaons and protons, close and above the kinematic threshold, is presented. The femtoscopic measurements of the correlation function at low pair-frame relative momentum of (K+p⊕K−p¯) and (K-p⊕K+p¯) pairs measured in pp collisions at s=5, 7, and 13 TeV are reported. A structure observed around a relative momentum of 58  MeV/c in the measured correlation function of (K-p⊕K+p¯) with a significance of 4.4σ constitutes the first experimental evidence for the opening of the (K¯0n⊕K0n¯) isospin breaking channel due to the mass difference between charged and neutral kaons. The measured correlation functions have been compared to Jülich and Kyoto models in addition to the Coulomb potential. The high-precision data at low relative momenta presented in this work prove femtoscopy to be a powerful complementary tool to scattering experiments and provide new constraints above the K¯N threshold for low-energy QCD chiral models.

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. Cross-section measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and the rapidity y of the J/ψ meson in the region p$_{T}$ < 14 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5, for both prompt J/ψ mesons and J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays. The production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic coverage are 15.30 ± 0.03 ± 0.86 μb for prompt J/ψ and 2.34 ± 0.01 ± 0.13 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, assuming zero polarization of the J/ψ meson. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The cross-section reported for J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays is used to extrapolate to a total $ b\overline{b} $ cross-section. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV are also determined.

Measurements are presented of electroweak boson production using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{−1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The bosons are identified in the W → μν and Z → μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$ decay channels. The cross-sections are measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.5, with transverse momenta p$_{T}$ > 20 GeV/c and, in the case of the Z boson, a dimuon mass within $ 60 < {M}_{\mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}<120 $ GeV/c$^{2}$. The results are $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\nu }=1093.6\pm 2.1\pm 7.2\pm 10.9\pm 12.7\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\overline{\nu}}=818.4\pm 1.9\pm 5.0\pm 7.0\pm 9.5\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{Z}\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{Z\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. The evolution of the W and Z boson cross-sections with centre-of-mass energy is studied using previously reported measurements with 1.0 fb$^{−1}$ of data at 7 TeV. Differential distributions are also presented. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) decaying to tau-lepton pairs in pp collisions is performed, using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 fb$^{−1}$, with 4.9 fb$^{−1}$ at 7 TeV and 19.7 fb$^{−1}$ at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-lepton-pair invariant mass spectrum. Exclusion limits are presented in the MSSM parameter space for different benchmark scenarios, m$_{h}^{max}$ , m$_{h}^{mod +}$ , m$_{h}^{mod −}$ , light-stop, light-stau, τ-phobic, and low-m$_{H}$. Upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for gluon fusion and b-quark associated Higgs boson production are also given.

They are based on proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text {TeV} $ recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ . The measured inclusive cross section in the $\mathrm{Z}$ peak region (60–120 $\,\text {GeV}$ ), obtained from the combination of the dielectron and dimuon channels, is $1138 \pm 8\,\text {(exp)} \pm 25\,\text {(theo)} \pm 30\,\text {(lumi)} \text {\,pb} $ , where the statistical uncertainty is negligible. The differential cross section $\mathrm{d}\sigma /\mathrm{d}{}m$ in the dilepton mass range 15–2000 $\,\text {GeV}$ is measured and corrected to the full phase space. The double-differential cross section $\mathrm{d}^2\sigma /\mathrm{d}{}m\,\mathrm{d}|y |$ is also measured over the mass range 20 to 1500 $\,\text {GeV}$ and absolute dilepton rapidity from 0 to 2.4. In addition, the ratios of the normalized differential cross sections measured at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ and 8 $\,\text {TeV}$ are presented. These measurements are compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) orders using various sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The results agree with the NNLO theoretical predictions computed with fewz 3.1 using the CT10 NNLO and NNPDF2.1 NNLO PDFs. The measured double-differential cross section and ratio of normalized differential cross sections are sufficiently precise to constrain the proton PDFs.

This paper presents a measurement of the triple-differential cross section for the Drell-Yan process Z/γ$^{*}$ → ℓ$^{+}$ ℓ$^{−}$ where ℓ is an electron or a muon. The measurement is performed for invariant masses of the lepton pairs, m$_{ℓℓ}$ , between 46 and 200 GeV using a sample of 20.2 fb$^{−1}$ of pp collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012. The data are presented in bins of invariant mass, absolute dilepton rapidity, |y$_{ℓℓ}$|, and the angular variable cos θ$^{*}$ between the outgoing lepton and the incoming quark in the Collins-Soper frame. The measurements are performed in the range |y$_{ℓℓ}$ | < 2.4 in the muon channel, and extended to |y$_{ℓℓ}$ | < 3.6 in the electron channel. The cross sections are used to determine the Z boson forward-backward asymmetry as a function of |y$_{ℓℓ}$ | and m$_{ℓℓ}$ . The measurements achieve high-precision, below the percent level in the pole region, excluding the uncertainty in the integrated luminosity, and are in agreement with predictions. These precision data are sensitive to the parton distribution functions and the effective weak mixing angle.

We present results on transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and rapidity ($y$) differential production cross sections, mean transverse momentum and mean transverse momentum square of inclusive J/$\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ at forward rapidity ($2.5<y<4$) as well as $\psi(2S)$-to-J/$\psi$ cross section ratios. These quantities are measured in pp collisions at center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. Both charmonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, using the muon spectrometer. A comprehensive comparison to inclusive charmonium cross sections measured at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$, 7 and 8 TeV is performed. A comparison to non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculations, which describe prompt and non-prompt charmonium production respectively, is also presented. A good description of the data is obtained over the full $p_{\rm T}$ range, provided that both contributions are summed. In particular, it is found that for $p_{\rm T}>15$ GeV/$c$ the non-prompt contribution reaches up to 50% of the total charmonium yield.
