Cross sections for inelastic scattering of electrons from hydrogen were measured for incident energies from 7 to 17 GeV at scattering angles of 6° to 10° covering a range of squared four-momentum transfers up to 7.4 (GeV/c)2. For low center-of-mass energies of the final hadronic system the cross section shows prominent resonances at low momentum transfer and diminishes markedly at higher momentum transfer. For high excitations the cross section shows only a weak momentum-transfer dependence.

Measurements of the ratio (R) of positron-proton and electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been made, with the square of the four-momentum transfer (q2) equal to 0.20, 0.69, 0.73, 1.54, 2.44, 3.27, 3.79, and 5.00 (GeV/c)2. The measurements, after radiative corrections, are consistent with R=1, with standard errors ranging from ±0.016 to ±0.123. The results give limits for the size of the two-photon effects.

Electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for four-momentum transfers squared q 2 from 1.0 to 25.0 (GeVc)2. The electric (GEp) and magnetic (GMp) form factors of the proton were not separated, since angular distributions were not measured at each q 2. However, values for GMp were derived assuming various relations between GEp and GMp. Several theoretical models for the behavior of the proton magnetic form factor at high values of q 2 are compared with the data.

We have carried out an experimental study of the neutron and proton deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions. The structure functions were extracted from electron-proton and electron-deuteron differential cross sections measured in three experiments spanning the angles 6°, 10°, 15°, 18°, 19°, 26°, and 34°. We report primarily on the large-angle (15°-34°) measurements. Neutron cross sections were extracted from the deuteron data using an impulse approximation. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the nucleon is composed of pointlike constituents. The variation of the cross section with angle suggests that the hypothetical constituents have spin ½. The data for σnσp, the ratio of the neutron and proton differential cross sections, are in the range 0.25 to 1.0, and are within the limits imposed by the quark model. Detailed studies of the structure functions were made for a range of the scaling variable ω from ω=1.3 to ω=10.0, and for a range of invariant four-momentum transfer Q2 from 1.0 to 20.0 GeV2. These studies indicate that the structure functions approximately scale in the variable ω, although significant deviations from scaling in ω are apparent in the region 1.3<ω<3.3. These deviations from scaling are in the same direction and of similar magnitude for both neutron and proton. The interpretation of the data in terms of various theoretical models is discussed.

The deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions of deuterium and aluminum nuclei have been measured. The kinematic dependence of the ratio of aluminum and deuterium structure functions is similar to the dependence of the ratio of steel and deuterium structure functions, and provides further evidence for the distortion of the quark momentum distributions of nucleons bound in a nucleus.

The production of antineutrons and charged Σ's in e+e− annihilations has been measured at s=4 and 7 GeV and at the ψ(3.1) resonance. Two packages containing spark chambers, steel plates, and scintillation counters were added to each side of the Mark I detector at SPEAR. Antineutrons were identified by annihilations which produced large-angle charged prongs characteristic of a high-Q reaction. The resulting antineutron cross sections and momentum distributions are consistent with previous antiproton results. Charged Σ's were detected by forming mass combinations with the n's and charged tracks in the Mark I. A clear signal is seen in the 7-GeV and ψ data, with little or no signal at s=4 GeV. The increase in Σ± production between 4 and 7 GeV is consistent with simple expectations for charmed-baryon production. A search for the decays Λc−→Σ±π∓π− and Σc*Σc→Λc−π± yields no significant peaks. An upper limit, at the 90% confidence level, of σΛcB(Λc→Σ±π∓π−)<56 pb is set.

We present a comparison of the strong couplings of light ($u$, $d$, and $s$), $c$, and $b$ quarks determined from multijet rates in flavor-tagged samples of hadronic $Z~0$ decays recorded with the SLC Large Detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. Flavor separation on the basis of lifetime and decay multiplicity differences among hadrons containing light, $c$, and $b$ quarks was made using the SLD precision tracking system. We find: $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{uds}/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 0.987 \pm 0.027({\rm stat}) \pm 0.022({\rm syst}) \pm 0.022({\rm theory})$, $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~c/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.012 \pm 0.104 \pm 0.102 \pm 0.096$, and $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~b/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.026 \pm 0.041 \pm 0.041\pm 0.030.$

The strong coupling alpha_s(M_Z^2) has been measured using hadronic decays of Z^0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with QCD predictions both at fixed order, O(alpha_s^2), and including resummed analytic formulae based on the next-to-leading logarithm approximation. In this comprehensive analysis we studied event shapes, jet rates, particle correlations, and angular energy flow, and checked the consistency between alpha_s(M_Z^2) values extracted from these different measures. Combining all results we obtain alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1200 \pm 0.0025(exp.) \pm 0.0078(theor.), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.

We have compared a new QCD calculation by Clay and Ellis of energy-energy correlations (EEC’s) and their asymmetry (AEEC’s) in e+e− annihilation into hadrons with data collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. From fits of the new calculation, complete at O(αs2), we obtained αs(MZ2)=0.1184±0.0031(expt)±0.0129(theory) (EEC) and αs(MZ2)=0.1120±0.0034(expt)±0.0036(theory) (AEEC). The EEC result is significantly lower than that obtained from comparable fits using the O(αs2) calculation of Kunszt and Nason.
The data are compared to the predictions of Monte-Carlo. Two values of ALPHA_S are corresponded the two theoretical models used in the comparison.
We present a measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e+e- collisions. The measurement includes the final data taken with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) during the period 1996-1998. Using a sample of 383,487 Z decays collected during the 1996-1998 runs we measure the pole-value of the asymmetry, ALR0, to be 0.15056+-0.00239 which is equivalent to an effective weak mixing angle of sin2th(eff) = 0.23107+-0.00030. Our result for the complete 1992-1998 dataset comprising 537 thousand Z decays is sin2th(eff) = 0.23097+-0.00027.

We have determined the strong coupling $\as$ from a comprehensive study of energy-energy correlations ($EEC$) and their asymmetry ($AEEC$) in hadronic decays of $Z~0$ bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with all four available predictions of QCD calculated up to $\Oa2$ in perturbation theory, and also with a resummed calculation matched to all four of these calculations. We find large discrepancies between $\as$ values extracted from the different $\Oa2$ calculations. We also find a large renormalization scale ambiguity in $\as$ determined from the $EEC$ using the $\Oa2$ calculations; this ambiguity is reduced in the case of the $AEEC$, and is very small when the matched calculations are used. Averaging over all calculations, and over the $EEC$ and $AEEC$ results, we obtain $\asz=0.124~{+0.003}_{-0.004} (exp.) \pm 0.009 (theory).$

We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from $Z~0 \rightarrow q \bar{q}$ decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the 95\% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}

We have determined the strong coupling αs from measurements of jet rates in hadronic decays of Z0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Using six collinear and infrared safe jet algorithms we compared our data with the predictions of QCD calculated up to second order in perturbation theory, and also with resummed calculations. We find αs(MZ2)=0.118±0.002(stat)±0.003(syst)±0.010(theory), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.

We present the first measurement of the correlation between the $Z^0$ spin and the three-jet plane orientation in polarized $Z^0$ decays into three jets in the SLD experiment at SLAC utilizing a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The CP-even and T-odd triple product $\vec{S_Z}\cdot(\vec{k_1}\times \vec{k_2})$ formed from the two fastest jet momenta, $\vec{k_1}$ and $\vec{k_2}$, and the $Z^0$ polarization vector $\vec{S_Z}$, is sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. We measure the expectation value of this quantity to be consistent with zero and set 95\% C.L. limits of $-0.022 < \beta < 0.039$ on the correlation between the $Z^0$-spin and the three-jet plane orientation.

We have measured gluon splitting into bottom quarks, g→b b ̄ , in hadronic Z 0 decays collected by SLD between 1996 and 1998. The analysis was performed by looking for secondary bottom production in 4-jet events of any primary flavor. 4-jet events were identified, and in each event a topological vertex-mass technique was applied to the two jets closest in angle in order to identify them as b or b ̄ jets. The upgraded CCD-based vertex detector gives very high B -tagging efficiency, especially for B hadrons with the low energies typical of this process. We present the first experimental study of the ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of the charged-particle multiplicity distribution in high-energy particle interactions, using hadronic Z$^0$ decays collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. We find that this ratio, as a function of the moment-rank $q$, decreases sharply to a negative minimum at $q=5$, which is followed by quasi-oscillations. These features are insensitive to experimental systematic effects and are in qualitative agreement with expectations from next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD.
CONST is the cumulant to factorial moments ratio. See text for definition.
We present a direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter $A_c$ in the coupling of the $Z^0$ to $c$-quarks with the SLD detector. The measurement is based on a sample of 530k hadronic $Z^0$ decays, produced with a mean electron-beam polarization of $|P_e| = 73 %$. The tagging of $c$-quark events is performed using two methods: the exclusive reconstruction of $D^{\ast+}$, $D^+$, and $D^0$ mesons, and the soft-pions ($\pi_s$) produced in the decay of $D^{\ast+}\to D^0 \pi_s^+$. The large background from $D$ mesons produced in $B$ hadron decays is separated efficiently from the signal using precision vertex information. The combination of these two methods yields $A_c = 0.688 \pm 0.041.$
CONST(NAME=A_C) is connected with the forward-backward asymmetry by following way: ASYM(NAME=FB) = ABS(P_e)*CONST(NAME=A_C)*2z/(1 + z**2), where z = cos(theta), theta is the polar angle of the outgoing fermion relative to the incident electron, P_e is the longitudinal polarization of the electron beam. Two values for constant A_c were obtained using two different c-quark tagging methods: exclusive charmed-meson reconstruction (C=EXCLUSIVE) and inclusive soft-pion analysis (C=SOFT_PIONS).
We have made the first direct measurement of the parity-violating coupling of the Z^0 boson to the strange quark, A_s, using ~550,000 e^+e^- ->Z^0->hadrons events produced with a polarized electron beam and recorded by the SLD experiment. Z^0 -> s-sbar events were tagged by the absence of B or D hadrons and the presence in each hemisphere of a high-momentum K^+- or K^0_s. From the polar angle distributions of the strangeness-signed thrust axis, we obtained A_s=0.895+-0.066(stat.)+-0.062(syst.). We have measured the differential production cross sections as a function of scaled momentum x_p=2p/E_cm of the identified hadron species pi+, K+, K0, K*0, phi, p, Lambda0, and of the corresponding antihadron species in inclusive hadronic Z0 decays, as well as separately for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b flavors. Clear flavor dependences are observed, consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results were used to test the QCD predictions of Gribov and Lipatov, the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and the predictions of three fragmentation models. Ratios of production of different hadron species were also measured as a function of x_p and were used to study the suppression of strange meson, strange and non-strange baryon, and vector meson production in the jet fragmentation process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of the above predictions, as they remove the contribution of heavy hadron production and decay from that of the rest of the fragmentation process. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production as a function of x_p in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high x_p, providing direct evidence that higher-momentum hadrons are more likely to contain a primary quark or antiquark. The differences for pseudoscalar and vector kaons provide new measurements of strangeness suppression for high-x_p fragmentation products.

We present improved measurements of the differential production rates of stable charged particles in hadronic Z0 decays, and of charged pions, kaons and protons identified over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. In addition to flavor-inclusive Z0 decays, measurements are made for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b primary flavors, selected using the upgraded Vertex Detector. Large differences between the flavors are observed that are qualitatively consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results are used to test the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and the predictions of three models of the hadronization process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of these predictions, as they do not include the contribution of heavy-hadron production and decay; the heavy-flavor results provide complementary model tests. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high momentum for all three charged hadron species, providing direct probes of leading particle effects, and stringent constraints on models.

Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in $b$, $c$ and light quark ($u,d,s$) events from $Z~0$ decays measured in the SLD experiment. Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of $b$ and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select $c$ quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities: $\bar{n}_{uds} = 20.21 \pm 0.10 (\rm{stat.})\pm 0.22(\rm{syst.})$, $\bar{n}_{c} = 21.28 \pm 0.46(\rm{stat.}) ~{+0.41}_{-0.36}(\rm{syst.})$ $\bar{n}_{b} = 23.14 \pm 0.10(\rm{stat.}) ~{+0.38}_{-0.37}(\rm{syst.})$, from which we derived the differences between the total average charged multiplicities of $c$ or $b$ quark events and light quark events: $\Delta \bar{n}_c = 1.07 \pm 0.47(\rm{stat.})~{+0.36}_{-0.30}(\rm{syst.})$ and $\Delta \bar{n}_b = 2.93 \pm 0.14(\rm{stat.})~{+0.30}_{-0.29}(\rm{syst.})$. We compared these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent fragmentation.

We report a measurement of the inclusive charged-particle distribution for gluon jets derived from nearly threefold-symmetric three-jet events taken at center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV in e+e− annihilation. The charged-particle spectrum for these jets is observed to fall off more rapidly than those of quark jets of the same energy.
Errors include both statistics and the uncertainty in correction factors. X is defined at the energy of the individual particle divided by the total energy of the jet to which it is assigned.
Decay modes of the charmed mesons, D 0 and D + , are studied in e + e − annihilation data at 4.03 and 4.41 GeV c.m. energy. The products of cross section times branching ratio are measured for the K − π + , K − π + π + π − , K S π + π − and K − π + π + final states. Upper limits are established for the Cabibbo forbidden decays via π + π − , K + K − , K + K − π + , K + π + π − and π + π − π + . The K − π + π + π − final state is shown to be dominated by K − π + ρ 0 .
THESE PARTIAL CROSS SECTIONS ARE CONVERTED TO TOTAL D INCLUSIVE CROSS SECTIONS USING KNOWN BRANCHING RATIOS AND TABULATED IN M. PICCOLO ET AL., PL 86B, 220 (1979).
The production of enutral kaons in e + e − annihilation has been measured for c.m. energies between 3.4 GeV and 7.6 GeV. Near 4 GeV the inclusive K S cross section shows an increase and structure similar to total hadron production. Roughly 40–45% of all hadronic final states contain kaons, except at 4.028 GeV and 4.415 GeV, where a significantly larger kaon fraction is observed.

THIS IS TWICE THE MEASURED KS CROSS SECTION. THE ERRORS ARE STATISTICAL ONLY. THERE IS 15 PCT ABSOLUTE NORMALIZATION ERROR, PLUS POSSIBLY SOME ENERGY DEPENDENT ERROR. THE DATA ARE NOT EQUALLY SPACED IN THE ENERGY INTERVALS.
We observe a resonancelike structure in the total cross section for hadron production by e+e− colliding beams at a mass of 4414 ± 7 MeV having a total width Γ=33±10 MeV. From the area under this resonance, we deduce the partial width to electron pairs to be Γee=440±140 eV. Further structure of comparable width is present near 4.1 GeV.

We have observed an azimuthal asymmetry in inclusive hadron production by e+e− annihilation at the center-of-mass energy s=7.4 GeV. The asymmetry is caused by the polarization of the circulating beams in the storage ring and allows separate determination of the transverse and longitudinal structure functions. We find that transverse production dominates for x>0.2 where x is the scaling variable 2ps.

The total cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation has been measured at center-of-mass energies between 2.4 and 5.0 GeV. Aside from the very narrow resonances ψ(3105) and ψ(3695), the cross section varies between 32 and 17 nb over this region with structure in the vicinity of 4.1 GeV.

MEAN CHARGED MULTIPLICITY. ERRORS ARE STATISTICAL ONLY.
We have searched the mass region 3.2 to 5.9 GeV for evidence of narrow resonances in e+e−→hadrons. We find no evidence for any such resonances other than the ψ(3695) in this region with a sensitivity ranging from about 12 to 45% of the integrated cross section of the ψ(3695). The more stringent bounds apply to resonances of a few MeV width, while the looser bounds apply to resonances of up to 20 MeV width.
EXTREAMLY GOOD DATA, MUST BE ASCED FROM AUTHORS.
We have observed a second sharp peak in the cross section for e+e−→hadrons at a center-of-mass energy of 3.695±0.004 GeV. The upper limit of the full width at half-maximum is 2.7 MeV.
