Neutrons from the breakup of $^{19}$C

Neutrons arising from the breakup of a 30 MeV/nucleon 19 C beam on a tantalum target have been measured using the 98 element array DEMON. A narrow, forward peaked neutron angular distribution, with a corresponding momentum spread considerably smaller than those measured simultaneously for 21 N, 22 O and 24 F, was observed for charged fragments with Z < Z proj . Interpreted in terms of the core-breakup reaction model, the results support the existence of a one neutron halo in 19 C.

Subthreshold K+ production in heavy ion collisions

The cross section for K + meson production in collisions of 36 Ar ions on a 48 Ti target has been measured at an incident energy of 92 MeV per nucleon. A description of the experimental set-up is given. Twelve events attributed to monoenergetic muons following the decay of stopped kaons have been identified. From these events, one infers a production cross section of 240 pb. Data are briefly discussed.

Kaon production in nucleus nucleus collisions at 92-MeV per nucleon.

K+ production far below the free nucleon-nucleon threshold has been investigated in collisions of 36Ar on 12C, natTi, and 181Ta targets at an incident energy of 92 MeV per nucleon. The cross sections for K+ production have been inferred from the observed muon decays of positive kaons. The results are discussed in the framework of a participant-spectator model and are compared to proton induced K+ production and to subthreshold pion production experiments.

Elastic neutron scattering at 96 MeV from 12C and Pb-208

A facility for detection of scattered neutrons in the energy interval 50–130MeV, SCANDAL, has recently been installed at the 20–180MeV neutron beam line of the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. Elastic neutron scattering from C12 and Pb208 has been studied at 96MeV in the 10°–70° interval. The achieved energy resolution, 3.7MeV, is about an order of magnitude better than for any previous experiment above 65MeV incident energy. The present experiment represents the highest neutron energy where the ground state has been resolved from the first excited state in neutron scattering. A novel method for normalization of the absolute scale of the cross section has been used. The estimated normalization uncertainty, 3%, is unprecedented for a neutron-induced differential cross section measurement on a nuclear target. The results are compared with modern optical model predictions based on phenomenology or microscopic nuclear theory.

Elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from iron, yttrium, and lead

Data on elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from Fe56, Y89, and Pb208 in the angular interval 10−70° are reported. The previously published data on Pb208 have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain more information from data, namely to increase the number of angular bins at the most forward angles. A study of the deviation of the zero-degree cross section from Wick's limit has been performed. It was shown that the data on Pb208 are in agreement with Wick's limit while those on the lighter nuclei overshoot the limit significantly. The results are compared with modern optical model predictions, based on phenomenology and microscopic nuclear theory. The data on Fe56, Y89, and Pb208 are in general in good agreement with the model predictions.

Inclusive cross sections and one-particle inclusive spectra are given for neutral K, Λ and Λ produced in K − p and K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c in the 4.5 m Mirabelle hydrogen bubble chamber at the Serpukhov accelerator. Cross sections for associated production are also given, and the energy dependences of the cross sections and of the x distributions in the central and in the fragmentation regions are discussed.

Total reaction and neutron removal cross-sections of (30-60)A MeV He and Li isotopes on Pb

Total reaction cross sections σR of (30–60)AMeV 4,6,8He and 6,7,8,9,11Li on Pb, and 2n-removal cross sections σ−2n of 6,8He and 11Li on Pb, were measured by injecting magnetically separated, focused, monoenergetic, secondary beams of those projectiles into a telescope containing Pb targets separated by thin Si detectors. All these σR’s (except 4He), and σ−2n for 6He and 11Li, are underpredicted by microscopic model calculations which include only nuclear forces. Better agreement is achieved by including electromagnetic dissociation in the model, for those projectiles for which either the electric dipole response functions or the dominant photodissociation cross sections were known. The cross sections σ−4n for 8He, σ−xn for 7,8,9Li, and (σ−3n+σ−4n) for 11Li were found to be ⩽0.7 b. All σR’s were measured to better than 5% accuracy, showing that the method is usable for other target elements sandwiched into a Si telescope.

Production of gamma rays in K- p and K+ p Interactions at 32-GeV/c

Inclusive cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions are presented for γ rays produced in K − p and K + p interactions at 32 GeV/c in the 4.5 m Mirabelle hydrogen bubble chamber at the Serpukhov accelerator. The average longitudinal and transverse momentum of neutral pions and the average π 0 multiplicity ▪ 〈 n π 0〉 are estimated. It is found that 〈 n π 0〉 is an increasing function of the number of charged prongs.

Measurement of the branching ratio for the process b --> tau- anti-nu/tau X.

The inclusive branching ratio for the process b -> tau nu X has been measured using hadronic Z decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP in the years 1992-2000. The result is: BR(b -> tau nu X) = (2.78 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.51)% This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model expectation and puts a constraint of tan(beta) / M(H+/-) < 0.53 GeV-1 at the 95% confidence level on Type II Two Higgs Doublet Models.

eta-meson production in proton-proton collisions at excess energies of 40 and 72 MeV

The production of η mesons in proton-proton collisions has been studied using the WASA detector at the CELSIUS storage ring at excess energies of Q=40 MeV and Q=72 MeV. The η was detected through its 2γ decay in a near-4π electromagnetic calorimeter, whereas the protons were measured by a combination of straw chambers and plastic scintillator planes in the forward hemisphere. About 6.9×104 and 9.3×104 events were found at Q=40 MeV and Q=72 MeV, respectively, with background contributions of less than 5%. A simple parametrization of the production cross section in terms of low partial waves was used to evaluate the acceptance corrections. Strong evidence was found for the influence of higher partial waves. The Dalitz plots show the presence of p waves in both the pp and the η{pp} systems and the angular distributions of the η in the center-of-mass frame suggest the influence of d-wave η mesons.
