We have measured the mean charged multiplicity n¯CH as a function of transverse momentum p⊥ of the forward proton in the reaction p+p→p+MM for five intervals of missing mass (MM) using our Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System. We observe an increase of n¯CH for p⊥>1 GeV/c.

Inclusive hadron production in muon-proton inelastic scattering has been measured for q2>0.5 (GeV/c)2 and 10<ν<135 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons and the hadron invariant structure function F(x′). Results are given for different regions of q2 and s.

Study of the Energy and Charged Multiplicity Dependence of Inclusive pi- Production in pi- p Interactions Up to Fermilab Energies

Using new data from 100 GeV c π − interactions, we find the energy dependence of the invariant cross-section in the target fragmentation (central) region to be consistent with an A + Bs − 1 2 (C + Ds − 1 4 ) behavior. The leading particle peak near x = + 1 exhibits a width in x which becomes smaller with increasing energy and an integrated cross section which is approximately energy independent.

We have studied muon-produced hadrons from a deuterium target. The structure functions and the charge ratios are reported for neutrons; the transverse momentum and azimuthal distributions are reported for deuterons. The structure function for the neutron is similar to that of the proton. The charge ratio of produced hadrons follows the expectation of a simple spin-½ quark model. Transverse-momentum results agree with those at lower energy and are similar to those from hadron-hadron interactions. No azimuthal anisotropy is seen.

Inclusive mu - Pair Production at 150-GeV by pi+ Mesons and Protons

Anderson, K.J. ; Henry, G.G. ; McDonald, K.T. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 37 (1976) 799, 1976.
Inspire Record 3993 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21035

We report the measurements of the inclusive μ-pair production by 150-GeV protons and π+ mesons on beryllium. Absolute cross sections as well as the Feynman-x and PT dependence are presented in the mass region between 0.211 and 3.5 GeV/c2. Upper limits are also given for the inclusive production of η and ρ′(1600) mesons.

Hadronic Production of Massive Muon Pairs: Dependence on Incident Particle Type and on Target Nucleus.

Data from a study of muon pairs produced in hadron-nucleus collisions are compared with the Drell-Yan model. Comparison of dimuon production by π+ and π− mesons on an isoscalar target shows evidence for a charge asymmetry characteristic of an isospin-nonconserving electromagnetic process. The average transverse momentum of the pairs increases smoothly with pair mass. Data taken on carbon and tin targets are used to extract the dependence on target atomic weight.

We present results of a large-acceptance experiment in which muon pairs were observed in the mass range 0.6 to 6.0 GeV/c2. Emphasis is given to features of the production of Jψ and ψ′(3.7) particles. We find [Bσ]ψ′(3.7)[Bσ]Jψ to be 0.007±0.004 for p-C and 0.018±0.007 for π+-C interactions. Comparison with results from e+e− storage rings indicates that both the Jψ and the ψ′(3.7) are produced strongly rather than electromagnetically in our experiment.

Inclusive single-particle spectra for π± production are presented for data from π±p interactions at 100 GeV/c. The spectra for the four reactions π±p→π±+anything are compared as a function of laboratory longitudinal momentum, Feynman x, center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity, and transverse momentum squared. Comparisons are also made between these data and analogous data from 16 and 18.5 GeV/c π±p interactions and the energy dependence is discussed. Average values of the transverse momentum are given as a function of the longitudinal momentum and charged-particle multiplicity. A comparison of the charge distributions is presented as a function of rapidity and c.m. energy.

Results on the protron structure function, F2, are presented for 0.3<q2<80.0 GeV2 and 10<ν<200 GeV. The results support the conclusions of earlier work at 97 and 147 GeV that scaling is violated. A new value for R=σSσT=0.44±0.25 has been obtained using all the Fermilab proton measurements.

$\rho^0$ Production in $\pi^- p$ Interactions at 100-{GeV}/$c$, 200-{GeV}/$c$ and 360-{GeV}/$c$

Inspire Record 7275 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.4591

Inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections for gp0 production in 100, 200, and 360 GeV/c π−p interactions are presented. Differential cross sections for ρ0 production as functions of c.m. rapidity and transverse momentum are compared with the corresponding differential cross sections for pion production. Effects of various methods of estimating background on the values obtained for ρ0 production cross sections are discussed. About 10% of the final-state charged pions appear to come from ρ0 decay. Thus, while ρ0 production and decay is a significant source of final-state pions, other sources must contribute the majority of the produced pions.
