Observation of a Narrow State at 2.46-GeV/c**2: A Candidate for the Charmed Strange Baryon a+

Phys.Lett.B 122 (1983) 455, 1983.
Inspire Record 188802 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30747

A narrow state has been observed in the reaction Σ − + Be → ( Λ K − π + π + ) + X in an experiment at the CERN SPS hyperon beam. At 2.46 GeV/ c 2 the effective ( Λ K − π + π + ) mass distribution shows an excess of 82 events above a background estimated to be 147, corresponding to a statistical significance of more than 6 standard deviations. The positive charge of the observed final state, which has strangeness −2, suggests the interpretation as a Cabibbo favoured decay of the charmed strange baryon, A + [quark content (csu)]. The cross section times branching ratio is measured to be σ · B = (5.3 ± 2.0) μ b/ (Be nucleus) for x > 0.6. The invariant production cross section is described by E d 3 σ /d p 3 ∞ (1 - x ) (1.7±0.7) exp[−(1.1 −0.4 +0.7 ) p T 2 ].

Positive Pion Photoproduction From Hydrogen at Photon Energies Between 500-{MeV} and 1400-{MeV} in Forward Direction

Z.Phys.C 18 (1983) 199, 1983.
Inspire Record 189703 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.16352

The differential cross section of the reactionγ+p→π+ was measured at pion CM-angles of 20° and 30° for photon energies between 500 MeV and 1,400 MeV. The pions were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. By measuring each pion trajectory and by offline calculation of the initial pion parameters an energy resolution of about 2.5% FWHM was achieved. The results complete a set of data which were measured in recent years at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron. In comparison to photoproduction analyses two effects were revealed: The η cusp appears in the energy dependence of the cross section as a sharp drop atKγ=710 MeV. In the region of the third resonance the data show a greater enhancement than predicted by most of the analyses.

Deuteron Photodisintegration at Photon Energies Between 200-{MeV} and 700-{MeV} in Backward Direction

Althoff, K.H. ; Anton, G. ; Bour, D. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 21 (1983) 149, 1983.
Inspire Record 192906 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.50170

The differential cross section of the deuteron photodisintegration was measured at a protion c.m. angle of 180 degrees and for photon energies between 180 and 730 MeV. The protons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. The proton energy resolution varied between 30 MeV and 50 MeV FWHM. Since these are the first data at 180 degrees in this energy range a comparison can only be done with data from other laboratories extrapolated to 180 degrees and with theoretical predictions. The agreement with existing calculations is poor. Contributions of dibaryons to the cross section seem not to improve the situation.

Evidence for Narrow States Decaying Into ($\Lambda \bar{p}$ Pions) at 3.1-{GeV}/$c^2$ With Charges +1, 0 and -1

Inspire Record 228256 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47311

Evidence for narrow states produced by Σ − interactions in beryllium, and decaying into ( Λ p + pions ), has been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS hyperon beam. At 3.1 GeV/ c 2 , the ( Λ p π + π + ), ( Λ p π + π + π − ) and ( Λ p π + π − ) effective mass distributions show an excess of 45, 19 and 62 events above a background of 50, 28 and 187, respectively. The possibility that these three signals are statistical fluctuations is remote. The observed widths of the signals are compatible with the mass resolution of the apparatus, 24 MeV/ c 2 FWHM. We have not been able to find an interpretation of the quantum numbers of the final states, which are baryon number 0, strangeness −1 and charge +1, 0 and −1.

The Transverse Energy Distributions of $^{32}$S Nucleus Collisions at 200-{GeV} Per Nucleon

Phys.Lett.B 214 (1988) 295-302, 1988.
Inspire Record 265090 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29873

Transverse-energy distributions have been measured for the collisions of the 32 S nucleus with Al, Ag, W, Pt, Pb, and U target nuclei, at an incident energy of 200 GeV per nucleon. The shapes of these distribution reflect the geometry of the collisions, including the deformation effects. For central collisions, the transverse-energy production in the region −0.1< η lab <2.9 increases approximately as A 0.5 , where A is the atomic mass number of the target. This increase is accompanied by a relative depletion in the forward region η lab > 2.9. These results are compared with those obtained under similar conditions with incident 16 O nuclei. A comparison is also made with the predictions of a Monte Carlo generator based on the dual parton model. Finally, we give estimates of the energy density reached and its dependence on the atomic mass number of the projectile.

Inclusive Negative Particle $p(T$) Spectra in $P$ - Nucleus and Nucleus-nucleus Collisions at 200-{GeV} Per Nucleon

Z.Phys.C 46 (1990) 361-368, 1990.
Inspire Record 282897 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.15239

The HELIOS experiment has measured inclusivep⊥ spectra of negative particles in the rapidity region 1.0<y<1.9. The general shape of thep⊥ spectra in p +W, O+W and S+W is similar, but cannot be described by a single exponential. Compared to p+p collisions, an excess is observed for low and highp⊥. This effect increases with the projectile mass. Except for very lowE⊥, the average transverse momentum <p⊥> is found to be approximately constant up to the highest accessible values ofE⊥.

Kinematically complete measurement of the reaction pi- p ---> pi+ pi- n in the region of Delta dominance as a test of chiral Lagrangians

Ortner, H.W. ; Baran, R. ; Bohnert, U. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 64 (1990) 2759-2762, 1990.
Inspire Record 302426 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19971

The first kinematically complete, good-statistics data for the (π,2π) reaction on the proton are presented. They involve double- and triple-differential cross sections as well as π+π− angular correlations. At energies around the Δ resonance, they exhibit a marked difference from phase space. The data are qualitatively described within the framework of an extension of Weinberg’s effective chiral Lagrangian.

Nuclear Dependence of Dimuon Production at 800-GeV

Alde, D.M. ; Baer, H.W. ; Carey, T.A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 64 (1990) 2479-2482, 1990.
Inspire Record 303588 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19997

A precise measurement of the atomic-mass dependence of dimuon production induced by 800-GeV protons is reported. Over 450 000 muon pairs with dimuon mass M≥4 GeV were recorded from targets of H2, C, Ca, Fe, and W. The ratio of dimuon yield per nucleon for nuclei versus H2, R=YA/Y2H, is sensitive to modifications of the antiquark sea in nuclei. No nuclear dependence of this ratio is observed over the range of target-quark momentum fraction 0.1<xt<0.3. For xt<0.1 the ratio is slightly less than unity for the heavy nuclei. These results are compared with predictions of models of the European Muon Collaboration effect.
