An experiment was done in the external proton beam of the Berkeley 184-in. cyclotron to measure the production cross sections for pions from various target nuclei, from hydrogen to lead. The cross-section data are presented and the reaction mechanisms discussed. The hydrogen production appears to fit the one-pion-exchange model.

A novel form of mass spectrometer has been used to measure the masses, widths, and cross sections of the η, ω, X0(958), and φ mesons near their respective thresholds in the reaction π−+p→missingmass+n. The incident momentum is varied in small steps through the threshold while neutrons of a given momentum are detected near zero degrees. The lower limit of the c.m. momentum P* at which measurements have been made ranges from about 50 MeV/c at the φ to about 30 MeV/c at the η. A somewhat low value for the ω mass, 782.3 ± 0.6 MeV, is found. The width of the X0 is < 1.9 MeV (95% confidence level). All four mesons show evidence of S-wave production, with values of σP* of 21.2 ± 1.8, 0.35 ± 0.03, and 0.29 ± 0.06 μb/(MeV/c) for the η, X0, and φ, respectively. A rapid rise in the ω cross section appears to be modified by a final-state interaction. The effect of this rise can probably be seen in some S11 pion-nucleon phase-shift solutions. Evidence is also presented of a sudden drop in the π+π− mass spectrum just above the threshold for the production of a K+K− pair. Total neutrino and antineutrino cross sections in the energy range 15 to 150 GeV, and the nucleon structure functions, F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and xF 3 ( x , Q 2 ) in the Q 2 range 0.5 to 50 (GeV/ c ) 2 have been measured using a data sample of 3000 neutrino and 3800 antineutrino events. The structure functions show a weak Q 2 dependence at different x values.

The inclusive production of charmed baryonsΛc+ by 40–70 GeV neutrons on carbon has been observed. The decays\(\Lambda _c^ + \to \bar K^0 p\pi ^ + \pi ^ -\) (130 ± 18 events) andΛc+→Λ0π+π+π− (57±14 events) have been detected. The mean value ofΛc+ mass is (2,268±6) MeV/c2. The invariant cross section forX>0.5 is described byE·d3σ/dp3∝ exp(−)bPT·(1−X)n withb=(2.5±0.6) (GeV/c)−1 andn=(1.5±0.5).

BEBC filled in turn with hydrogen, and with a neon-hydrogen mixture, was exposed to the CERN SPS wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The ratios of the charged-current cross sections per nucleon, σ(νH 2 ) σ(ν Ne ) and σ( ν H 2 ) σ( ν Ne ) , between 20 and 300 GeV were found to be 0.656 ± 0.020 and 1.425 ± 0.052, respectively. Multiplying these ratios by the revised cross sections in neon, σ(ν Ne ) E = (0.723 ± 0.038) × 10 −38 cm 2 / GeV per nucleon and σ( ν Ne ) E = (0.351 ± 0.019) × 10 −38 cm 2 / GeV per nucleon, and their ratio, σ( ν Ne ) σ(ν Ne ) = 0.485 ± 0.020 ,, yields values for the total charged-current cross sections on protons, σ(νp)/ E and σ( ν p ) E , of (0.474 ± 0.029) × 10 −38 cm 2 /GeV and (0.500 ± 0.032) × 10 −38 cm 2 /GeV. respectively, and a value for the ratio σ( ν p ) σ(ν p ) of 1.053 ± 0.066.

The cross section for the processe+e−→π0+ anything has been measured at an average center of mass energy of 34.6 GeV for π0 energies between 0.7 and 17 GeV. The angular distribution for π0 energies larger than 2 GeV is of the formdσ/dΩ∼1+Acos2θ, withA=1.2±0.5. The ratio of π0 to π± production in the measured energy range is 2σ(π0)/(σ(π+)+σ(π−))=1.13±0.18

The process γγ→π+π−π+π− has been investigated in reactions of the typee+e−→e+e−π+π−π+π− in the single tag mode. The range of the four momentum squared of one of the virtual photons was 0.28 GeV2/c2≦Q2≦3.6 GeV2/c2, the average being 〈Q2〉=0.92 GeV2/c2; the other photon was quasi real. The reaction is mainly described by the channels γγ→ρ0ρ0 and γγ→4π (phase space), occuring with about equal probability. TheQ2-dependence of the cross section is in agreement with the ρ form factor.
