Charged particle production in central S-S collisions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon has been studied by the WA94 experiment at the CERN-SPS. Particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH, while a silicon telescope in the Omega spectrometer and an array of MultiWire Proportional Chambers have been used to trace particles through the RICH detector. Production ratios and transverse mass spectra for π ± , K ± and p( p ) at central rapidity and p T > 1.3 GeV/ c are presented.

We have measured the polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons produced inclusively by a $\Sigma^-$ beam of 340 GeV/c momentum in nuclear targets. From a sample of 9.5 millions of identified $\Lambda$ decays, polarizations were determined in the range $x_F \gt 0.1$ and $p_t\leq 1.6$ GeV/c . The polarization w.r.t. the production normal is mainly positive for $x_F \geq 0.3$. At fixed values of $x_F$, it increases with $p_t$ to a maximum between $p_t = 0.5$ and $p_t = 1$ GeV/c , and then decreases to zero or even negative values, in sharp contrast to the plateau above $p_t = 1$ GeV/c observed in inclusive $\Lambda$ production by protons.

The polarization of Lambda0, AntiLambda0, Sigma+ and Xi- inclusively produced in Sigma- induced interactions at 330 GeV has been measured in the experiment WA89 at CERN. This is the first measurement of polarization of baryons produced by a hyperon beam. No polarization of AntiLambda is observed, as was also the case in proton beam data. At transverse momenta of about 1GeV/c Lambda0 and Sigma+ show little polarization, significantly lower than in the proton beam data, while Xi- have a polarization comparable to the polarization of Lambda0 produced in proton beams.

We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.
Longitudinally segmented target composed of one copper slab (4mm thick) and3 carbon plates,made of pressed diamond powder with a thickness of 2mm each. The data sample comprises 1.5*10E+8 interactions on the tape which correspond to about 2*10E10 incoming SIGMA- and 3.8*10e+08 interactions.
The transverse momentum distributions ofW andZ bosons produced in\(\bar pp\) collisions at\(\sqrt s= 630 GeV\) are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction ofW bosons produced withpT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)−1.3+0.9(syst)%.

Combining the cross section for pbar p --> W X * BR(W --> E NU) given in Alitti et al, ZP C47 (90) 11. (660 +- 15 (DSYS=37) pb).
A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e+e− decays. The measured cross sections are σWe = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σZe = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38−0.72+0.82(stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.
X(Q=PARTON) and Q**2 are mean values.
3roton-antiproton elastic scattering at cm energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t range 0.14 ⩽ − t ⩽ 0.26 GeV 2 . The data is well fitted by an exponential form exp( bt ) with b = 13.3 ± 1.5 GeV −2 .
