As a part of our program to study p−p collisions at Cosmotron energies, the differential cross sections for elastic scattering were measured at five laboratory angles between 2.3° and 17° for each incident energy. Total elastic cross sections obtained by integration are 21.4±1.4, 17.0±0.8, and 14.7±0.7 mb at 1.35, 2.1, and 2.9 BeV, respectively. The angular distribution as a function of the momentum transfer, exhibits a forward diffraction peak, the width of which shrinks slightly as the incident energy increases. The experimental results were fitted by simple optical model calculations and also compared with the predictions of the composite particle theory of Chew and Frautschi.

Differential scattering data have been obtained in bubble-chamber exposures and are compared with theoretical predictions using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The effect of the quadrupole deformation of the deuteron and the influence of the various orders of multiple scattering are put in evidence. Agreement between theoretical predictions and experiment is very good at the higher energy. At the lower energy, agreement is good only for momentum transfers below 0.2 (GeVc)2. Possible reasons for the disagreement above 0.2 (GeVc)2 are explored.

Using wire spark chambers we have observed the backward production of ϱ + mesons in the reaction π + p → p (missing mass) at 5.2 GeV/ c . In the four-momentum interval −0.80 < u < −0.006 (GeV/ c ) 2 the angular distribution shows a backward peak. In contrast to backward π + p elastic scattering, there is no dip in the angular distribution at u ≈ −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The ϱ + decay is found to be compatible with isotropy.

Total and differential cross sections are presented for the reactions K − p → K − p and K − p → K o n at 13 points in the c.m. energy range 1915–2168 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis is carried out on these data together with the polarisation measurements of Daum et al. [1] and the total cross section measurements [2] within this energy range. The well known Σ(1915), Σ(2030) and Λ(2100) are observed and their resonance parameters measured. Structure is also found in the D 05 and F 07 waves. An SU(3) analysis of the 5 2 + octet, 7 2 + decuplet and 7 2 − singlet gives generally good agreement between theory and experiment except that the elasticity of the Σ(1915) is experimentally rather larger than predicted.

Results are reported on K − -neutron interactions at c.m. energies near 2 GeV. The interactions are dominated by strong production of hyperon resonances, particularly Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520). Production cross sections and angular distributions are given for the Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520) and branching fractions to decay modes observed in the experiment are given for Σ(1385) and Λ(1520). The strong energy dependence of some features of the data suggests that s -channel effects are dominant.

The real part of the forward amplitude for Compton scattering on protons was measured through the interference between the Compton and Bethe-Heithler amplitudes by detecting the zero-degree electron pairs asymmetrically. The measurement was made at an average photon energy of 〈k〉=2.2 GeV, and an average momentum transfer to the recoil proton 〈t〉=−0.027 (GeV/c)2. Results are presented of a wire-spark-chamber spectrometer measurement of the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 14.15 GeV/c. The region covered in the square of the four-momentum transfer, t, is 0.01<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2. The cross section is found to obey very nearly a simple exponential t dependence with no evidence of structure. A fit to the data of the form dσdt∝exp(bt+ct2) on the range 0.05<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2 (i.e., above the region affected by Coulomb scattering) yields b=8.26±0.10 (GeV/c)2 and c=1.01±0.17 (GeV/c)−4. Considering the results of previous measurements, b≃11 (GeV/c)−2 for −t<0.05 (GeV/c)2, a deviation from the simple exponential near −t≃0.05 (GeV/c)2 is indicated.

The angular distribution of π + p elastic scattering has been measured at an incident momentum of 10 GeV/ c . Nearly the whole angular range was covered in one experimental set-up. The pronounced dip at − t = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , observed at lower momenta, has diminished and is essentially a shoulder at 10 GeV/ c . The other structure at larger momentum transfers are also different in detail from what we observed at 5 GeV/ c . In the 90° c.m. region the differential cross-section is approximately one nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , which is more than two orders of magnitude lower than at 5 GeV/ c .

A partial-wave analysis of the (K ππ ) 0 system produced in the charge exchange reaction K − p →( K 0 π + π − ) n has been made in the mass range 1.04 ⩽ M (K ππ ) < 1.56 GeV c data at 8, 10 and 16 GeV/ c . It was found that in about 2 3 of the cases, the (K ππ ) 0 system is produced in states of unnatural spin-parity, namely J P = 0 − and 1 + ; the rest is in the natural spin-parity state J P = 2 + state is consistent with being all K ∗ (1420). The unnatural spin-parity states are produced mostly (∼ 80% of the events) by natural parity exchange. The facts that unnatural spin-parity states are produced in this non-diffractive channel, with J P = 1 + dominant, and that the exchange responsible for their production is mostly of natural parity, are similar to what was found for the charged (K ππ ) − system in the diffractive reaction K − p→(K ππ ) − p. However, the absolute value and the energy dependence of the cross sections are very different in the two cases.

For the first time, the reactions π + p →K + ∑ + and K − p→ π − ∑ + have been studied in the same apparatus. This has been done at an adequately high momentum (10.1 GeV/ c ) to allow a check of the prediction of exchange degeneracy, that the differential cross sections should be converging at high energy. We have measured the cross section for momentum transfers t between t min and t = −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . We find that for both reactions the differential cross section shows an exponential fall, with no deviations right in to t = t min (where some other experiments have shown a dip in the cross section). Furthermore, we find the magnitude of the differential cross sections to be closely similar at t = 0, with a ratio R= ( d σ d t) t=0 ( K − p →π − ∑ + ) ( d σ d t) t=0 (π + p → K + ∑ + However, the slope for the positive reaction is about 19% steeper than that for the negative reaction.

A partial-wave analysis has been performed on the (K − π − π + ) system produced in the reaction K − p → K − π − π + p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the Q mass region it is found that the two dominant states, K ∗ π and Kπ, both in 1 + S wave, are produced with different polarisations, helicity being approximately conserved in the t -channel for K ∗ π and in the s -channel for Kπ. This is in contradiction with the assumption that the amplitude can be factorised into “production” and “decay” parts, and hence that the two amplitudes are fully coherent. The phase variation of the two states do not indicate simple resonance behaviour. It is concluded that the Q-mass enhancement is composite.

Angular distributions of π + and K + p elastic scattering have been measured for an incident beam momentum of 10.0 GeV/ c . For π + p elastic scattering almost the complete angular distribution was measured. The angular distribution of proton-proton elastic scattering was measured for an incident momentum of 9.0 GeV/ c in the interval of the four-momentum transfer squared from 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 5.0 (GeV/ v ) 2 . For π + p elastic scattering the structures at − t = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 and − t = 4.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 are less pronounced than at lower momenta. The cross section for scattering at 90° in the c.m. system is of the order of 1 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 . For K + p elastic scattering is a break in the angular distribution around − t = 3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The differential cross sections for proton-proton elastic scattering decrease smoothly with increasing momentum transfers.

A comparison is made of the low-mass three-meson systems (πππ), (Kππ), (π K K ) and ( K K K ) diffractively produced in the reaction meson + proton → three mesons + proton. Several striking similarities and a few important differences are observed: (i) the reactions are consistent with the assumption that the three mesons decay entirely into a 0 − meson and a 0 + , 1 − or 2 + resonance; (ii) the three-meson mass spectra have a peak ≈ 250 MeV above the effective threshold M eff of the dominant decay mode and then fall off approximately as (mass) −3 ;(iii) the average spin 〈 J 〉 = 0.55 + 1.1 Q eff , where Q eff = M - M eff ; (iv) the average orbital angular momentum 〈 l 〉 increases according to 〈 l 〉 = 0.75 Q eff ; (v) the three-meson states are produced dominantly in unnatural spin-parity states and no evidence for their being resonant is found; (vi) the only natural spin-parity states found are the well-established 2 + resonances A 2 and K ∗ (1420); they have similar properties to the non-resonant unnatural parity states except for a dip at t = 0 in the dσ/d t distributions; (vii) both the unnatural and natural spin-parity states are produced mostly by an exchange of natural parity; (viii) there is evidence for two types of production mechanism with different polarization properties, one approximately conserving helicity in the t -channel and the other in the s -channel.

We present results on the differential cross-sections for the reactions π + p → K + Σ + (1385) and K − p → π − Σ + (1385) at 10 GeV/ c . For the first time, the same equipment has been used in measuring both reactions, in order to obtain good relative normalization. In the region of low t ( t min to −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 ) the two differential cross-sections have similar shape, and show a sharp forward dip indicating a dominant helicity flip contribution. However, the magnitudes of the cross-sections are significantly different, indicating substantial exchange degeneracy breaking. We find the ratio of the integrated cross-sections for the reactions K − p → π − Σ + (1385) and π + p → K + Σ + (1385) over the range −0.3 < t ′ < 0.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 to be 2.0 ± 0.2.

An experiment has been completed at the Daresbury synchrotron to measure the asymmetry in the photoproduction cross section of neutral pions on hydrogen, for photons polarised normal to and in the production plane. The source of polarised photons was coherent bremsstrahlung of electrons traversing the lattice structure of diamond and the polarisation P of the γ beam was calculated from the measured intensity of the coherent spike. The asymmetry parameter Σ, defined as Σ = ( σ ⊥ − σ |)/( σ ⊥ + σ |) where σ ⊥( σ |) are the cross sections for photons polarised perpendicular (parallel) to the production plane, has been measured over a range of photon energies from 1.2 to 2.8 GeV and over a range of − t (the square of the four-momentum transfer) from 0.13 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 1.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A marked energy variation in the value of Σ is found over the energy region 1.6–1.8 GeV.

Measurements of the polarised beam asymmetry parameter Σ for eta photoproduction from protons, have been carried out at incident energies of 2.5 GeV and 3.0 GeV, and for various t -values between −0.2 (GeV/c) 2 and −1.2 (GeV/c) 2 . The values of Σ are close to +1 for values of | t | less than 0.7 (GeV/c) 2 , showing that there can be little contribution from unnatural parity exchange in any Regge exchange model of the process, in disagreement with present theories. Differential cross sections for the process werre also measured, and are consistent with those from other experiments.

Antiproton-proton annihilations into final states containing one or two K10-mesons are studied on the basis of 450 000 pictures from the CERN 2 m HBC. The experiment covers the domain of antiproton incident momentum from 1.50 to 2.04 GeV/c. The resonance production rates are computed for the most abundant channels. The K10K10 threshold effect is explained through the inelastic channel π+π− → K10K10. The decay modes D, E → δ±(975)π∓, δ±(975) → K10K± are pointed out. The strange mesons C and C′ are observed in these annihilations and come mainly from the two-body channels \(p\bar p\) → (C, C′)K and\(p\bar p\) → (C, C′)K*.

The production of η(550) and ω(780) mesons is studied in π ± p interactions at 16 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections for exclusive channels are presented, and for the π + p data differential cross sections are given for quasi-inclusive production where the η or ω is required to be accompanied by charged particles only. Close similarities are observed between η, ω and also ϱ 0 (770) production in terms of longitudinal and transverse variables. By a rough estimate, the η, ω and ϱ 0 inclusive yields are found to be in the ratio 0.32 : 0.85 : 1, respectively, for 16 GeV/ c π + p collisions. The polarization parameter P for the reactions p p → π − π + and p p → K − K + has been measured over essentially the full angular range at ll laboratory momenta between 1.0 and 2.2. GeV/ c , using a proton target polarized perpendicular to the scattering plane. The angles and momenta of both final state particles were determined from wire spark chambers, using the deflection caused by the polarized target magnet. Between 1000 and 5300 π − π + events, and 140 and 1300 K − K + events, were measured at each momentum. Differential cross sections for p p → π − π + were obtained. These are in excellent agreement with previous results. The polarization parameter for both channels is very close to +1 over much of the angular range. Going from the lower to the higher momentum, the differences in cross section between the two reactions diminish at low | t | by about a factor 2. We find large polarizations of opposite sign for the two reactions. The momentum dependence, presented in the form of α eff ( t ) for the t range 0 to −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , is compared with the expectations from the K ∗ −K ∗∗ trajectory.
