Transmission measurements in good and poor geometry have been performed at the Brookhaven Cosmotron to measure the total and absorption cross sections of several nuclei for neutrons in the Bev energy range. The neutrons are produced by bombarding a Be target with 2.2-Bev protons. The neutron detector requires the incident particle to pass an anticoincidence counter and produce in an aluminum radiator a charged particle that will traverse a fourfold scintillation telescope containing 6 in. of lead. Contribution of neutrons below 800 Mev are believed small. The angular distribution of neutrons from the target is sharply peaked forward with a half-width of 6°. The integral angular distributions of diffraction scattered neutrons from C, Cu, and Pb are measured by varying the detector geometry. The angular half-width of these distributions indicates a mean effective neutron energy of 1.4±0.2 Bev. The total cross sections σH and σD−σH are measured by attenuation differences in good geometry of CH2-C and D2O-H2O, with the result: σH=42.4±1.8 mb, σD−σH=42.2±1.8 mb. The cross sections of eight elements from Be to U are measured in good and poor geometry, and the following values of the total and absorption cross sections are deduced (in units of millibrans): Experimental errors are about 3 percent in σtotal and 5 percent in σabsorption. An interpretation of these cross sections is given in terms of optical model parameters for two extreme nuclear density distributions: uniform (radius R) and Gaussian [ρ=ρ0exp−(ra)2]. The absorption cross-section data are well fitted with R=1.28A13 or a=0.32+0.62A13 in units of 10−13 cm. A nuclear density distribution intermediate between uniform and Gaussian will make the present results consistent with the recent electromagnetic radii.

The Brookhaven National Laboratory twenty-inch liquid hydrogen bubble chamber was exposed to a monoenergetic beam of 2.85-Bev protons, elastically scattered from a carbon target in the internal beam of the Cosmotron. All two-prong events, excluding strange particle events, have been studied by the Yale High-Energy Group. The remaining interactions have been studied by the Brookhaven Bubble Chamber Group. Elastic scattering was found to be mostly pure diffraction scattering at center-of-mass angles up to about thirty-five degrees. Some phase shift and/or tapering of the proton edge was required to fit the data at larger angles. No polarization effects in the proton-carbon scattering were observed using hydrogen as an analyzer of polarized protons. Nucleonic isobar formation in the T=32, J=32 state was found to account for a large part of single pion production. High-orbital angular-momentum states were found to be greatly favored in single pion production. The isobar model of Lindenbaum and Sternheimer gave good agreement with the observed nucleon and pion energy spectra. No polarization or alignment effects were observed for the isobar assumed in this model.

Measurements have been made of the ratio of the π+ photoproduction cross sections at right angles to and along the electric field vector. Data have been taken at 45°, 90°, and 135° at energies of 227, 240, 342, and 373 MeV. A comparison of the data with the predictions of a phenomenological analysis using only S and P waves shows less than 0.1% chance of obtaining such results without the inclusion of higher angular momenta, and hence, demonstrates even more convincingly the need for a meson current term which has been indicated by other measurements. A comparison is made with the relativistic dispersion relations of McKinley which include an approximation for the γ, ρ, π coupling. At the resonance energy our polarization asymmetry is insensitive to this coupling and is in good agreement with the McKinley prediction. At lower energy the agreement is not as good but our data seem to substantiate the need for a negative γ, ρ, π coupling constant.

Differential cross sections as a function of momentum are presented for the production of π mesons, K mesons, protons, deuterons, tritons, and He3 at various laboratory angles by 2.9-BeV protons striking Be and Pt targets. The Be data were taken at 13°, 30°, 60°, and 93° relative to the direction of the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator internal proton beam; the Pt data were taken at 13° and 93° only. The results are compared with the corresponding data in hydrogen in order to investigate the role of the complex nucleus in particle production at this energy.

Differential cross sections as a function of momentum are presented for the production of K+ mesons in p−p collisions at incident proton energies of 2.54, 2.88, and 3.03 GeV. The measurements were made at 20°, 30°, and 40° relative to the direction of the internal proton beam of the Princeton-Pennsylvania accelerator. At 2.54 GeV, the results follow closely the predictions from phase space (with 60% K+ΣN and 40% K+Λp in the final state). At 2.88 and 3.03 GeV, however, there is a definite disagreement with phase space. The data are compared to the predictions of three models: (1) a model based on the assumption that K's are produced via p+p→K++X+, where X+ is a B=2, S=−1 resonance which decays into a nucleon+hyperon; (2) the isobar model; and (3) the one-pion-exchange model. Model (1) is found to be inconclusive, model (2) is inadequate, and model (3) is partly successful in predicting total cross sections, but not in interpreting the detailed experimental observations.

We have measured the Wolfenstein triple-scattering parameters R, D, and A′ at 1.9 GeV for p−p scattering at 90° in the c.m. system. We find that R=0.11±0.16, A′=−0.54±0.16, and D=0.91±0.21, where these parameters are defined in the c.m. system. The possibility of a vector character for the strong inter-actions is discussed. We conclude that neither a single vector-meson exchange nor a single pseudoscalar-meson exchange can account for the data. Spin effects are found to remain an important part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction at four-momentum transfer −t=1.8 (GeV/c)2.

We have studied antiproton-deuteron elastic scattering between 1.60 and 2.00 GeV/c incident momenta. The differential cross sections may be characterized by a very steep forward peak (with b∼43 GeV−2) and a prominent break near −t∼0.2 GeV2. The results are used to test the validity of Glauber's multiple-scattering theory. Within the experimental range of measurements (−t between 0.028 and 0.46 GeV2), the theory provides a good qualitative description of the data.

Total and differential cross sections are presented for the reactions K − p → K − p and K − p → K o n at 13 points in the c.m. energy range 1915–2168 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis is carried out on these data together with the polarisation measurements of Daum et al. [1] and the total cross section measurements [2] within this energy range. The well known Σ(1915), Σ(2030) and Λ(2100) are observed and their resonance parameters measured. Structure is also found in the D 05 and F 07 waves. An SU(3) analysis of the 5 2 + octet, 7 2 + decuplet and 7 2 − singlet gives generally good agreement between theory and experiment except that the elasticity of the Σ(1915) is experimentally rather larger than predicted.

A systematic study of p p and p d reactions producing strange particles between 1.09 and 3.45 GeV/ c has been completed. Reaction and resonance cross-section data are presented at 11 p p and 13 p d momentum settings. Evidence for a broad shoulder in the K K 3π final state near 1.8 GeV/ c is presented and contrasted to previously published work on a portion of the final data sample. No evidence for a p n → K 0 K − ω effect near 1.3 GeV/ c is found, ruling out an association of K K ω effects with the nearby isospin one enhancement in the total cross section. Finally, we find no evidence for a p p → K K ω enhancement near 1.8 GeV/ c .

We report a search for quasistable particles with anomalous charge or large mass produced by the interaction of 300-GeV protons at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Time-of-flight measurements gave cross-section limits of about 10−31 cm2 for the production of massive charged particles.

A detailed analysis is presented of the reactions pp→pp,pp→ppπ0 and pp→pπ+n. The production cross sections are found to be 11.47 ± 0.33 mb, 2.54 ± 0.16 mb, and 5.73 ± 0.35 mb, respectively. The t dependence of elastic scattering can be described by the form e7.9t over the range 0.05<−t<0.50 GeV2. The single-particle distributions for the single-pion production processes are presented. Further detailed analyses are presented which demonstrate that pion-exchange phenomenology, both elementary and Reggeized, can account for the gross features of the peripheral pp→pπ+n data for M(pπ+)<2.4 GeV. Isospin-12 isobars are produced by some other processes in the channel pp→pN*+, especially when the invariant mass of the pion with the unrelated proton is large. Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

A measurement of the complete differential cross section for the reaction pp→dπ+ at 3.00, 3.20, 3.43, 3.65, 3.83, 4.00, 4.20, and 5.05 GeVc incident proton momentum has been made in an attempt to establish the role of the Δ (1950) in this region. The data show that the previously observed enhancement in the forward cross section between 3 and 4 GeVc due to this isobar is an effect which damps out quickly as the production angle departs from zero degrees, in contrast with the well-known enhancement at 1.35 GeVc, which is evident at all angles. In particular, the one-pion-exchange model is in poor agreement with the extended set of data. Differential cross sections for dp elastic scattering from 60° to 175° center of momentum (c.m.) were measured at 3.43, 4.50, 5.75, and 6.60 GeVc incident deuteron momentum. The measurements were made with a two-arm magnetic spectrometer, making use of multiwire proportional chamber detectors. The deuterons were accelerated at the Bevatron of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Data are compared with predictions of the baryon-pickup model and the one-pion-exchange model. The backward dip at 180° c.m. for 4.5 GeVc, predicted by Craigie and Wilkin using the one-pion-exchange model, is not observed, but reasonable fits to the momentum variation and angular distributions are found. When the data are plotted against the variable Δ of the baryon-pickup model, the s dependence is greatly reduced.

We have made a measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in KL0 decays. Magnetic analyses of the decay products in a spectrometer using multiwire proportional counters allowed kinematic reconstruction of the event where the particles traversed only 293 mg of matter. The leptons were differentiated from the pions only through their different transverse-momentum distributions. The asymmetry was measured to be (3.33 ± 0.50) × 10−3, in accord with the superweak description of CP nonconservation.
The asymmetry is defined as follows: ASYM = Cik/Bik, where Cik and Bik are the related to intensity of the events and depend on the particular set of transverse momenta of the leptons and pions (see text for details).
In exposures of the Argonne National Laboratory 12-ft bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium to a neutrino beam, we have observed events consisting of (1) a single π+ meson originating in the liquid, and (2) a proton with an e+e− pair pointing to it.
