Data on multiplicities of charged particles produced in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon are presented. It is shown that the mean multiplicity of negative particles is proportional to the mean number of nucleons participating in the collision both for nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. The apparent consistency of pion multiplicity data with the assumption of an incoherent superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions is critically discussed.

RE/IM MEASUREMENTS TAKEN FROM TABLE 1 OF KIRILLOVA 65.
The ratio of the analysing powers for quasi-elastic pp scattering in carbon and for elastic scattering on free protons was measured fromT = 0.52 to 2.8 GeV by scattering of the SATURNE II polarized proton beam on carbon and CH2. It was found to have a maximum at about 0.8 GeV. The energy dependence for quasielastic scattering on carbon had not been measured before above 1 GeV. The observed effect was not expected from simple models.

The two-pion production in pp-collisions has been investigated at CELSIUS in exclusive measurements from threshold up to $T_p$ = 1.36 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the channels $pn\pi^+\pi^0$, $pp\pi^+\pi^-$, $pp\pi^0\pi^0$ and also $nn\pi^+\pi^+$. For intermediate incident energies $T_p >$ 1 GeV, i.e. in the region which is beyond the Roper excitation but at the onset of $\Delta\Delta$ excitation, the total $pp\pi^0\pi^0$ cross section falls behind theoretical predictions by as much as an order of magnitude near 1.2 GeV, whereas the $nn\pi^+\pi^+$ cross section is a factor of five larger than predicted. An isospin decompostion of the total cross sections exhibits a s-channel-like energy dependence in the region of the Roper excitation as well as a significant contribution of an isospin 3/2 resonance other than the $\Delta(1232)$. As possible candidates the $\Delta(1600)$ and the $\Delta(1700)$ are discussed.

Cross sections for the (N N PI+ PI+) and (P N PI+ PI0) channels at EKIN = 1.1 GeV.
Excitation functions of proton-proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured in narrow steps for projectile momenta pp (energies Tp) from 1100 to 3300MeV/c (500 to 2500 MeV) in the angular range 35°≤Θc.m.≤90° with a detector providing ΔΘc.m.≈1.4° resolution. Measurements have been performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the cooler synchrotron COSY with an internal CH2 fiber target, taking particular care to monitor luminosity as a function of Tp. The advantages of this experimental technique are demonstrated, and the excitation functions obtained are compared to existing cross section data. No evidence for narrow structures was found.

Data on the mean multiplicity ofπ- produced in minimum bias proton-proton, proton-neutron and proton-nucleus interactions as well as central nucleus-nucleus collisions at momenta of 1.4–400 GeV/c per nucleon have been compiled and studied. The results for neutron-neutron and nucleon-nucleon interactions were then constructed. The dependence of the mean pion multiplicity in proton-nucleus interactions and central collisions of identical nuclei are studied as a function of the collision energy and the nucleus mass number. The number of produced pions per participant nucleon in central collisions of identical nuclei is found to be independent of the number of participants at a fixed incident momentum per nucleon. The mean multiplicity of negatively charged hadrons per participant nucleon for central nucleus-nucleus collisions is lower by about 0.12 than the corresponding multiplicity for nucleon-nucleon interactions atpLAB≲15 A·GeV/c, whereas the result at 200 A·GeV/c is above the corresponding nucleon-nucleon multiplicity. This may indicate change of the collision dynamics at high energy.

MEAN MULTIPLICITY OF N N COLLISIONS IS DEDUCED FROM PROTON-PROTON DATA.
The beam energy and invariant mass dependence of the dielectron yield in p + d interactions relative to the yield in p + p interactions is presented for incident kinetic energies from 1.0–4.9 GeV. The ratio of the yield in p + d interactions to that in p + p interactions decreases from 10.5±1.6 at 1.0 GeV to 1.96±0.08 at 4.9 GeV for electron pairs with invariant masses ⩾ 0.15 GeV/ c 2 . The large ratio at 1.0 GeV suggests that dielectron production in the p + d system is dominated by a p + n process. The beam energy dependence of the ratio indicates that this p + n contribution decreases with respect to the other dielectron sources as the incident energy is increased.

The energy dependence of the pp elastic analyzing power has been measured using an internal target during polarized beam acceleration. The data were obtained in incident-energy steps varying from 4 to 17 MeV over an energy range from 0.5 to 2.0 GeV. The statistical uncertainty of the analyzing power is typically less than 0.01. A narrow structure is observed around 2.17 GeV in the two-proton invariant mass distribution. A possible explanation for the structure with narrow resonances is discussed.

The pp total, elastic, and all the inelastic cross sections were measured at 11 momenta in the range 0.9–2.0 GeV/c. No clear structure was observed in their momentum dependences. The momentum dependence of the total cross section agrees quite well with the result of a phase-shift analysis by Arndt. Our measurement of the ppπ 0 and pnπ + cross sections served to normalize the earlier systematic but relative and extrapolated measurements of these cross sections over a narrower momentum range. Calculations by König and Kroll based on a pion exchange model including the effect of an I = 1 dibaryon did not fit the single-pion production cross sections.

pp interactions at 11 momenta in the range 0.9 to 2.0 GeV/ c have been studied. The elastic angular distributions, covering the c.m. angular range 22°–90°, agree in general with Hoshizaki's phase-shift analysis which shows the looping 1 D in and 3 F 3 amplitudes in the Argand diagram. About 80% of pn π + events come from the n Δ ++ state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the density matrix elements of the Δ ++ show no momentum or angular dependence. A large fraction of pp π 0 events also come from the p Δ + state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the Δ + density matrix elements is similar to that for the case of Δ ++ .

The spin-dependent observables N 0 s ″ kn , D 0 n 0 n and K 0 s ″ k 0 in pp elastic scattering were measured at nine energies between 0.84 and 2.1 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. The beam polarization was oriented longitudinally and the target polarization was oriented vertically. Precession of the recoil particle spin in the target holding field introduces a small contribution from other parameters. The present results for K 0 s ″ k 0 and D 0 n 0 n agree with our previous measurements of the same observables carried out in different beam and target spin configurations as well as with previously existing measurements. The observable N 0 s ″ kn had not been measured previously above 0.58 GeV. Below 1.3 GeV our data are compared with the predictions of the Saclay-Geneva phase shift analysis. The new results will considerably affect the phase shift analysis solutions and will contribute to their extension towards higher energies.

The pp analyzing power was measured using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. The measurements at 0.88 and 1.1 GeV were carried out in the angular region θ CM from 28° to ≅50° and complete our previous measurements from 45 ° to 90°. Above 1.1 GeV the measurements presented here cover both regions, extending from θ CM = 28° (at the lower energies) or θ CM = 18° (at the higher energies) to θ CM > 90°. The shape of the angular distribution A oono ( pp ) = ƒ(θ CM ) changes considerably with increasing energy. This structure is present at all energies, from kinematic threshold to 200 GeV.

The spin correlation parameter A oonn for pp elastic scattering was measured at 0.88, 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4 and 2.7 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. At the first two energies, the new measurements at θ CM < 50° complete our previous data from 45° to 90°. Between 1.3 and 2.7 GeV the measurements were performed in two overlapping angular regions covering together the CM angles from 28° (at the lower energies) or 18° (at the highest energy) to > 90°. At all energies above 1.3 GeV the angular distribution shows a dip at fixed four-momentum transfer − t ∼ 0.90 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The value of A oonn ( θ CM = 90°) decreases from A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.57 at 0.88 GeV to A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.35 at 2.7 GeV. However, the large value found at 1.8 GeV indicates that the energy dependence is not monotonic.

The SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized proton target were used to measure the total cross section difference Δσ T = −2 σ 1 tot at 26 energies between 0.43 and 2.4 GeV. Here Δσ T is the total cross section difference for transverse beam and target spins parallel and antiparallel, respectively, and σ 1tot is one of spin-dependent terms in the total cross section σ tot . The energy dependence of Δσ T below 1 GeV shows similar structures as for Δσ L . An additional minimum appears at about 1.3 GeV, which involves a structure in singlet spin partial waves.
