Report on the investigation of interactions in π−p collisions at a pion momentum of 1.59 GeV/c, by means of the 50 cm Saclay liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, operating in a magnetic field of 17.5 kG. The results obtained concern essentially the elastic scattering and the inelastic scattering accompanied by the production of either a single pion in π−p→ pπ−π0 and nπ−π+ interactions, or by more than one pion in four-prong events. The observed angular distribution for the elastic scattering in the diffraction region, can be approximated by an exponential law. From the extrapolated value, thus obtained for the forward scattering, one gets σel= (9.65±0.30) mb. Effective mass spectra of π−π0 and π−π+ dipions are given in case of one-pion production. Each of them exhibits the corresponding ρ− or ρ0 resonances in the region of ∼ 29μ2 (μ = mass of the charged pion). The ρ peaks are particularly conspicuous for low momentum transfer (Δ2) events. The ρ0 distribution presents a secondary peak at ∼31μ2 due probably to the ω0 → π−π+ process. The branching ratio (ω0→ π+π−)/(ω0→ π+π− 0) is estimated to be ∼ 7%. The results are fairly well interpreted in the frame of the peripheral interaction according to the one-pion exchange (OPE) model, Up to values of Δ2/μ2∼10. In particular, the ratio ρ−/ρ0 is of the order of 0.5, as predicted by this model. Furthermore, the distribution of the Treiman-Yang angle is compatible with an isotropic one inside the ρ. peak. The distribution of\(\sigma _{\pi ^ + \pi ^ - } \), as calculated by the use of the Chew-Low formula assumed to be valid in the physical region of Δ2, gives a maximum which is appreciably lower than the value of\(12\pi \tilde \lambda ^2 = 120 mb\) expected for a resonant elastic ππ scattering in a J=1 state at the peak of the ρ. However, a correcting factor to the Chew-Low formula, introduced by Selleri, gives a fairly good agreement with the expected value. Another distribution, namely the Δ2 distribution, at least for Δ2 < 10 μ2, agrees quite well with the peripheral character of the interaction involving the ρ resonance. π− angular distributions in the rest frame of the ρ exhibit a different behaviour for the ρ− and for the ρ0. Whereas the first one is symmetrical, as was already reported in a previous paper, the latter shows a clear forward π− asymmetry. The main features of the four-prong results are: 1) the occurrence of the 3/2 3/2 (ρπ+) isobar in π−p → pπ+π−π− events and 2) the possible production of the ω0→ π+π−π0 resonance in π−p→ pπ−π+π−π0 events. No ρ’s were observed in four-prong events.

We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

The reaction π−+p→π−+p has been studied in the 15-in. bubble chamber at the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator. The elastic scattering cross section was determined to be 8.5 ± 0.2 mb. The forward peak fits to an exponential in t with a slope of 8.1 ± 0.2 (GeV/c)−2. The forward differential cross section dσdΩ(0)=17.9±0.7 mb/sr. A fit of the center-of-mass angular distribution to Legendre polynomials needed terms up to the 12th order, corresponding to the highest nonzero partial wave of L=6.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and π+p→K+Y*+(1385) are reported at 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. Polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is also reported at 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. At small |t|, the cross section for π+p→K+Σ+ is well described by an exponential Aebt with slopes in the range b≈8−10 (GeV/c)−2; for |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2 this slope decreases considerably. The cross section for π+p→K+Y*+(1385) is well described for |t|>0.2 (GeV/c)2 by a single exponential of slope about half that for π+p→K+Σ+; there is no break near |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2. We observe a dip in this cross section near t=0. The polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is consistent with zero for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and becomes large and positive for larger |t|.

It is found in the reactions π ± p →( π ± π + π − )p, believed to be dominated by diffraction dissociation, that the d σ d t′ distributions show a “cross-over” effect at t ′ ≈ 0.15, similar to the effect observed in elastic scattering. This gives evidence for the interference of ( ϱ 0 , B 0 ,…)-exchanges with ( P , f 0 , …) -exchanges in pion diffraction dissociation reactions. No such evidence is found for baryon dissociation, π ± p → π ± (p π + π − ), at the same energy.

Measurements of the polarization parameter of the reactions π − p → π 0 n and π − p → η n at 4.90 and 7.85 GeV/ c and for a squared four-momentum transfer − t ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 have been achieved by using a butanol polarized proton target and detecting only the two γ's from the neutral meson decay. The background due to events involving bound protons has been separately measured and subtracted out. A large positive polarization has been found for the reaction π − p → π 0 n. It is consistent with other pion-nucleon scattering data connected by isospin conservation. The π−+p→π0+n differential cross section at 180° has been measured for 52 values of π− momentum from 1.8 to 6.0 GeV/c using a constant-geometry detection system. The average statistical uncertainty is ∼5% and the systematic uncertainty is ∼10%. The details of the experiment and the data analysis are discussed. The data are compared with those of other experiments with which they are generally in agreement. One set of data disagrees with those presented here and a possible reason for this is discussed. A five-parameter fit of the predictions of a dual-resonance model to our data gave excellent agreement. The differential cross sections at 180° for π±p elastic scattering have been compiled and the moduli and relative phase of the T=12 and T=32 pion-nucleon s- and u-channel amplitudes (|A12|, |A32|, and cosδ) have a minimum at u=0.4 GeV/c and, in the s channel, a corresponding minimum at s=2.2 GeV/c.

BACKWARD CROSS SECTION ESTIMATED BY LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL FIT.
Differential cross sections for π−p elastic scattering over the angular range 155° to 177° in the center-of-mass system have been measured at 33 incident pion momenta in the range 600 to 1280 MeV/c. The experiment, which was performed at the Bevatron at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, employed a liquid hydrogen target, a double-arm spectrometer, and standard counter techniques to detect the elastic events. The data from this experiment are compared to all other published data in this momentum region. The over-all agreement is good. The data of this experiment are also compared with the results of the recent phase-shift analysis by Almehed and Lovelace. In the momentum region between 700 and 900 MeV/c, the slope of the backward angular distribution goes rapidly through zero from negative to positive, and the magnitude of the differential cross section falls by more than a factor of 10. Momentum-dependent structure is seen in the extrapolated differential cross sections at 180°. Two prominent dips in the 180° differential cross sections appear at 880 and 1150 MeV/c. This structure is discussed in terms of a direct-channel resonance model that assumes only resonant partial waves are contributing to the cross sections for large scattering angles.

A novel form of mass spectrometer has been used to measure the masses, widths, and cross sections of the η, ω, X0(958), and φ mesons near their respective thresholds in the reaction π−+p→missingmass+n. The incident momentum is varied in small steps through the threshold while neutrons of a given momentum are detected near zero degrees. The lower limit of the c.m. momentum P* at which measurements have been made ranges from about 50 MeV/c at the φ to about 30 MeV/c at the η. A somewhat low value for the ω mass, 782.3 ± 0.6 MeV, is found. The width of the X0 is < 1.9 MeV (95% confidence level). All four mesons show evidence of S-wave production, with values of σP* of 21.2 ± 1.8, 0.35 ± 0.03, and 0.29 ± 0.06 μb/(MeV/c) for the η, X0, and φ, respectively. A rapid rise in the ω cross section appears to be modified by a final-state interaction. The effect of this rise can probably be seen in some S11 pion-nucleon phase-shift solutions. Evidence is also presented of a sudden drop in the π+π− mass spectrum just above the threshold for the production of a K+K− pair. The paper includes a comprehensive discussion of the method and of the details of the spectrometer.

We have measured the multiplicities of pions produced in the collisions of π mesons with neon nuclei at bombarding momenta of 10.5 and 200 GeV/c. The diffractive production of pions is clearly separable. If one excludes the diffractive part, the pion multiplicity obeys the same Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling as found previously for π−−p collisions. This fact would seem to indicate the validity of an energy-flux or collective-variable description of the production process. A surprisingly large number of energetic protons (> 1 GeV/c lab momentum) are found to be produced in π-Ne collisions.

We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. We have measured the polarization parameter in π−p elastic scattering at laboratory momenta of 1180, 1250, and 1360 MeV/c in the angular interval 65°<θc.m.<115°. The results were used to show that the polarized target used in these (and other similar) experiments was uniformly polarized. These measurements were also used to resolve pre-existing experimental discrepancies in the determination of the polarization parameter, and to clarify the behavior of scattering amplitudes in this energy range. We show that local measurements of this type are important in resolving discrete ambiguities affecting the energy continuation of the amplitudes. An important by-product of this experiment is the development of a fast method of reconstructing particle trajectories and fitting the elastic events, which could have a significant impact for future high-statistics experiments.

The experimentally determined average charged-particle multiplicities, 〈nX〉, of the systems, X, produced in the following reactions for 147 GeV/c incident pion momentum are presented as functions of the square of the invariant mass of X, MX2, and of |t|:π−p→πfast−X, π−p→pX, π−p→Δ++X, π−p→(π−π+)ρ0X, and π−p→Λ0X. Details of the analysis are discussed. These data can be fit by the expression 〈nX〉=A+B ln MX2+C|t| and the coefficients obtained for B are equal within their uncertainties. C is significantly different from zero only for π−p→πfast−X. These results and 〈nX〉 data from other inclusive and total-inelastic-reaction studies are discussed in terms of a simple model which assumes contributions to 〈nX〉 from the target-fragmentation, the central, and the beam-fragmentation regions in the case of total-inelastic reactions. For inclusive reactions, either the beam or target fragmentation is replaced by an exchange-particle-fragmentation contribution. The s, t, and MX2 dependence of the parameters of the model are deduced from triple-Regge considerations. The data are found to be consistent with the model and values are presented for the parameters.

The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

Mesons decaying into π 0 or η and one charged meson were studied using a liquid-argon calorimeter in a non-magnetic double-arm spectrometer. Cross sections and energy dependences are presented. The ϱ ± production mechanisms are discussed in detail: ω and π exchange contribute the largest fractions, but also A 2 exchange is present. ϱ ± production by ω exchange is shown to follow the energy behaviour predicted by the Regge trajectory α ω ( t ) = 0.4 − | t |.
Axis error includes +- 0.0/0.0 contribution (13 TO 25////STATISTICAL ERRORS ARE SMALLER THAN THE SYSTEMATIC ERRORS).
We present the final analysis of the nuclear effects on the cross section of dimuon production, using simultaneously a hydrogen and a platinum target in a 150, 200 and 280 GeV pion beam. For the dimuon mass interval 4.1 to 8.5 GeV, the ratio of the cross sections is in agreement with the Drell-Yan model within a 10% error, mainly due to systematics. The variation of this ratio with the dimuon mass, x 1 and x 2 is also in good agreement, and no variation with the transverse momentum is observed.
In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.
