The Mark II detector at SPEAR has been used to study D-meson production in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 6.7 GeV. The neutral and charged D mesons are identified from their K∓π± and K∓π±π± decay modes. Measurements of RD and of the inclusive differential cross section s dσdz are presented. The quasi-two-body cross sections σDD¯, σD*D¯, and σD*D¯* are derived from an overall fit to the D recoil spectra. No evidence was found for the associated production of charmed mesons and charmed baryons.

We present a measurement of the cross section for the reaction e + e − → e + e − π + π − π + π − at SPEAR. This channel is found to be large and dominated by the process γγ → ϱ 0 ϱ 0 → π + π − π + π − . The cross section, which is small just above the four-pion threshold, exhibits a large enhancement near the ϱ 0 ϱ 0 threshold.

Final state resonance production and single particle momentum spectra are presented for p p annihilations into K K and π's between 1.09 and 3.45 GeV/ c . Resonance production generally agrees with the Lamb statistical model. Momentum spectra of K's and π's are independent of incident energy, while the mean multiplicity increases in proportion to the c.m. energy, supporting the annihilation model of Jacob and Nussinov.

A systematic study of p p and p d reactions producing strange particles between 1.09 and 3.45 GeV/ c has been completed. Reaction and resonance cross-section data are presented at 11 p p and 13 p d momentum settings. Evidence for a broad shoulder in the K K 3π final state near 1.8 GeV/ c is presented and contrasted to previously published work on a portion of the final data sample. No evidence for a p n → K 0 K − ω effect near 1.3 GeV/ c is found, ruling out an association of K K ω effects with the nearby isospin one enhancement in the total cross section. Finally, we find no evidence for a p p → K K ω enhancement near 1.8 GeV/ c .

A systematic study of p p and p d topological and reaction cross sections between 1.51 and 2.90 GeV/ c has been completed. The data have been analysed in relation to the three known structures at c.m. N N energies of 2190, 2350 and 2375 MeV. The data suggest that four- and six-pion annihilations of antiprotons on neutrons may be the source of the 2350 MeV effect. Further data below 1.60 GeV/ c are required to verify this tentative conclusion.

A systematic study of p p and p d resonance production cross sections in non-strange annihilation channels between 1.51 and 2.90 GeV/ c has been completed. The data have been analysed in relation to the three known structures at c.m. N N energies of 2190, 2350 and 2375 MeV. Several resonance intermediate states may have broad maxima near the isopin one 2350 MeV structure. However, more data below 1.6 GeV/ c are required to better describe the background in this region before firm conclusions may be drawn.

Bottom quark production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV is studied with 5 inverse picobarns of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b jets in the central rapidity region (|y(b)| < 1) as a function of jet transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, DO results are found to be higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

We describe a search for psi(3770) decay to two-body non-DDbar final states in e+e- data produced by the CESR collider and analyzed with the CLEO-c detector. Vector-pseudoscalar production of Rho0Pi0, Rho+Pi-, OmegaPi0, PhiPi0, RhoEta, OmegaEta, PhiEta, RhoEtaPrime, OmegaEtaPrime, PhiEtaPrime, Kstar0 K0bar, and Kstar+K- is studied along with that of BOnePi (BOne0Pi0 and BOne+Pi-) and Pi+Pi-Pi0. A statistically significant signal is found for PhiEta, at an excess cross section of (2.4 +- 0.6) pb [Gamma_{PhiEta} (psi(3770)) =(74 +- 16)Mev], and a suggestive suppression of Pi+Pi-Pi0 and RhoPi. We conclude with form factor determinations for OmegaPi0, RhoEta, and RhoEtaPrime.

We present results of a detailed analysis of inclusive direct photon production at the ψ(3095). The direct-photon momentum distribution for x>0.4 is presented and compared with the leading-order quantum-chromodynamic prediction. The total production rate is found to be consistent with theoretical expectations, but the observed momentum distribution is considerably softer. Results of an analysis of some inclusive properties of the hadronic system recoiling against the direct photon are presented. The mean charged-particle and Ks multiplicities are presented as functions of the invariant mass of the hadronic system. These data agree well with the corresponding mean multiplicities measured in e+e− annihilations at center-of-mass energies comparable to the invariant mass of the hadronic system.

We report a measurement of the reaction γγ→K+K−π+π− in both tagged and untagged events at PEP. The cross section rises with invariant γγ mass to about 15 nb at 2 GeV and falls slowly at higher masses. We find clear evidence for the processes γγ→φπ+π− and γγ→K*0(892)Kπ. Upper limits (95% C.L.) of 1.5 and 5.7 nb in the mass range from 1.7 to 3.7 GeV are obtained for φρ0 and K*0K¯*0 production, respectively.

We report cross sections for the process γγ→pp¯ at center-of-mass energies W from 2.0 to 2.8 GeV. These results have been extracted from measurements of e+e−→e+e−pp¯ at an overall center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV, using the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Cross sections for the untagged mode [both photons nearly real] are shown to lie well above QCD predictions. We present a measurement of the cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to\pi^+pi^-\psi(2S)$ from threshold up to 8 GeV center-of-mass energy using events containing initial-state radiation, produced at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ storage rings. The study is based on 298 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded with the BaBar detector. A structure is observed in the cross-section not far above threshold, near 4.32 GeV. We also investigate the compatibility of this structure with the Y(4260) previously reported by this experiment.

We have measured exclusive ρ0, ω, and φ meson electroproduction at the Cornell Wilson Synchrotron. The final ρ0 data sample included 4637 four-constraint e+p→e+π++π−+p events, with incident energy E=11.5 GeV and electroproduction variables Q2 and W in the region 0.7<Q2<4 GeV2 and 1.9<W<4 GeV. We find that the width of the forward ρ0 diffraction peak increases rapidly as the lifetime of the intermediate hadron states decreases below cΔτ=1 fm and that the peak is wider for longitudinal ρ0 than it is for transverse ρ0. The longitudinal-transverse cross-section ratio Rp=σLσT, obtained assuming s-channel helicity conservation, becomes constant at high Q2. At fixed W the diffractive vector-meson-dominance (VMD) model reproduces the Q2 dependence of our cross section, σ=(σT+εσL), but is is not able to account for the rapid decrease in the cross section with increasing W we observe. We find that σωσρ depends on W but is independent of Q2 for 0.7<Q2<3 GeV2 and 2.2<W<3.7 GeV. However, σω is substantially larger than the diffractive VMD cross section. Our results for σφ are consistent with the Q2 dependence of the diffractive VMD model for 0.8<Q2<4 GeV2 and 2<W<3.7 GeV, but this model again fails to predict the W dependence we observe.

We have carried out an experimental study of the neutron and proton deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions. The structure functions were extracted from electron-proton and electron-deuteron differential cross sections measured in three experiments spanning the angles 6°, 10°, 15°, 18°, 19°, 26°, and 34°. We report primarily on the large-angle (15°-34°) measurements. Neutron cross sections were extracted from the deuteron data using an impulse approximation. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the nucleon is composed of pointlike constituents. The variation of the cross section with angle suggests that the hypothetical constituents have spin ½. The data for σnσp, the ratio of the neutron and proton differential cross sections, are in the range 0.25 to 1.0, and are within the limits imposed by the quark model. Detailed studies of the structure functions were made for a range of the scaling variable ω from ω=1.3 to ω=10.0, and for a range of invariant four-momentum transfer Q2 from 1.0 to 20.0 GeV2. These studies indicate that the structure functions approximately scale in the variable ω, although significant deviations from scaling in ω are apparent in the region 1.3<ω<3.3. These deviations from scaling are in the same direction and of similar magnitude for both neutron and proton. The interpretation of the data in terms of various theoretical models is discussed.

Data obtained with the bubble chamber BEBC at CERN are used for the first significant test of Adler's prediction for the neutrino and antineutrino-proton scattering cross sections at vanishing four-momentum transfer squaredQ2. An Extended Vector Meson Dominance Model (EVDM) is applied to extrapolate Adler's prediction to experimentally accessible values ofQ2. The data show good agreement with Adler's prediction forQ2→0 thus confirming the PCAC hypothesis in the kinematical region of high leptonic energy transfer ν>2 GeV. The good agreement of the data with the theoretical predictions also at higherQ2, where the EVDM terms are dominant, also supports this model. However, an EVDM calculation without PCAC is clearly ruled out by the data.

The inclusive production of antiprotons and Λ's in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of the c.m. energy in the range 3.7-7.6 GeV. We find that the baryon cross section has a behavior different from the total hadronic production. Our results show a rapid rise in the ratio σp¯σμμ between 4.4 and 5 GeV, consistent with what would be expected from charmed baryon production. Λ¯ production is 10-15% of p¯ production at all energies.

We have measured inclusive electron production in multiprong events produced by e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range 3.9-7.4 GeV. We find the electron momentum spectra are consistent with the electrons coming mainly from decays of charmed particles, with a smaller contribution from decays of the τ lepton. From our data we calculate the average branching ratio for charmed particles to decay into an electron plus additional particles to be (8.2±1.9)%.

We present limits on anomalous WWZ and WW-gamma couplings from a search for WW and WZ production in p-bar p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. We use p-bar p -> e-nu jjX events recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during the 1992-1995 run. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 96.0+-5.1 pb~(-1). Assuming identical WWZ and WW-gamma coupling parameters, the 95% CL limits on the CP-conserving couplings are -0.33<lambda<0.36 (Delta-kappa=0) and -0.43<Delta-kappa<0.59 (lambda=0), for a form factor scale Lambda = 2.0 TeV. Limits based on other assumptions are also presented.

Differential cross sections for elastic K + p scattering have been measured at nineteen momenta between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV/ c . The data represent between 10 thousand and 20 thousand elastic events at each momentum and cover a wide range of scattering angles ( −0.98 ≲ cos θ ∗ ≲ 0.95 ). A computer controlled system of scintillation counters and acoustic spark chambers was used to detect the elastic events. Various internal consistency checks indicate that the absolute normalization of the data is accurate to within 2–3%. The cross sections show a smooth transition from an isotropic angular distribution to a dominant forward peak over the range covered by the experiment. Phase-shift analyses including these results show little evidence for a direct-channel resonance, and fitting the results by t - and u -channel exchange processes alone gives a good fit.

We have updated our measurement of the cross section for e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons, our publication "Measurement of sigma(e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons) at E_{c.m.} = 3773 MeV", arXiv:hep-ex/0512038, Phys.Rev.Lett.96, 092002 (2006). Simultaneous with this arXiv update, we have published an erratum in Phys.Rev.Lett.104, 159901 (2010). There, and in this update, we have corrected a mistake in the computation of the error on the difference of the cross sections for e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> hadrons and e^+e^- -> psi(3770) -> DDbar. This paper reports measurements of processes: e+e- -> gamma KsK+pi-, e+e- -> gamma K+K-pi0, e+e- -> gamma phi eta, and e+e- -> gamma phi pi0. We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the ψ′′(3770) resonance in e+e− annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of Kππ-decay-mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D0 decays and an apparent nonuniform population on the Dalitz plot for the D+ decay into K−π+π+. Using tagged events, we measure the charged-particle multiplicity and strange-particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D+ and D0 semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D+ has a significantly longer lifetime than the D0.

Using the BES-II detector at the BEPC Collider, we measured the lowest order cross sections and the $R$ values ($R=\sigma^0_{e^+e^- \to {\rm hadrons}}/\sigma^0_{e^+e^- \to \mu^+\mu^-}$) for inclusive hadronic event production at the center-of-mass energies of 3.650 GeV, 3.6648 GeV and 3.773 GeV. The results lead to $\bar R_{uds}=2.224\pm 0.019\pm 0.089$ which is the average of these measured at 3.650 GeV and 3.6648 GeV, and $R=3.793\pm 0.037 \pm 0.190$ at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV. By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb$^{-1}$ taken, respectively, at $\sqrt s= 3.773$, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0$, $K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0$, $2(\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0)$, $K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0$ and $3(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0\pi^0$ at the three energy points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for $\psi(3770)$ decay into these final states at 90% C.L..

A streamer-chamber spectrometer is triggered by fast forward protons from 4-GeV/c π−p interactions at the Bevatron. Meson-resonance production in the backward, Iu=32 exchange reactions π−p→pM− are studied, where M− refers to π−, ρ−, A1−, A2−, and B−. Elastic scattering and ρ− production are observed and discussed in detail. No backward A1−, A2−, or B− production is observed at the level of approximately 5 βb.

A peak in the pK−π+ and p¯K+π− invariant-mass spectra at 2.285±0.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (Λc). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.037±0.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. New measurements of inclusive p and Λ cross sections are also presented, allowing an estimate of the branching ratio B(Λc→pK−π+)=0.022±0.010.
THE TOTAL INCLUSIVE CHARMED LAMBDA CROSS SECTION IS DERIVED FROM THE OBSERVED PRODUCTION RATE VIA THE <P K- PI+> CHANNEL USING THE STEP IN INCLUSIVE PROTON PRODUCTION AT THE CHARMED-BARYON THRESHOLD AND REASONABLE ASSUMPTIONS. THE BRANCHING RATIO (LAMBDA/C+ --> P K- PI+) IS THEN 2.2 +- 1.0 PCT.
ACTUALLY TWICE THE INCLUSIVE ANTI-PROTON CROSS SECTION (EACH BARYON PAIR IS COUNTED TWICE).
EACH BARYON PAIR PRODUCED IS OF COURSE COUNTED TWICE IN THIS CROSS SECTION.
Direct electrons are observed in baryon events produced in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies above the ΛcΛ¯c threshold. These events are attributed to charmed-baryon pair production and subsequent Λc semileptonic decay. Various semileptonic branching ratios of the Λc are determined, including B(Λc→e+X)=(4.5±1.7)%.
