In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

The spin rotation parameter R has been measured for elastic π − p scattering at 40 GeV/ c , at four momentum transfers t ranging from −0.19 to −0.52 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The average value within this interval is R π − p = -0.200± 0.023. The resulting constraints on the πN scattering amplitudes are discussed. The experiments also yields an average value for K − p scattering, R K − p scattering, R K − p = -0.16±0.16.

Final results are presented for the spin-spin correlation parameters CSL and CLL for np elastic scattering with a polarized neutron beam incident on a polarized proton target. The beam kinetic energies are 484, 634, and 788 MeV, and the c.m. angular range is 80°-180°. These data will contribute significantly to the determination of the isospin-0 amplitudes in the energy range from 500 to 800 MeV.

The spin correlation parameter C NN has been measured for n-p elastic scattering at 181 MeV. A comparison with predictions from various phase shift sets and potential models reveals sizeable deviations from the for the data Paris potential and Saclay phase shifts. For the Paris potential the deviations are directly related to an overprediction of the 3 D 2 phase shift parameter.

We present data of several rescattering observables measured inn p elastic scattering between 0.80 and 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the Saclay polarized frozen-spin proton target. Three different configurations of beam and target polarization directions were used: the observablesDonon andKonno were measured with the normal-normal spin configuration at eight energies;Nonkk,Dos″ok andKos″ko were determined with the longitudinal-longitudinal configuration at six energies;Nonsk,Dos″ok andKos″so with the sideway-longitudinal configuration at six energies. Part of the data was obtained with an unpolarized CH2 target where only the two spin-index polarization transfer parametersKos″ko andKos″so were determined. Data are compared with phase shift analyses predictions and with the LAMPF results at 0.788 GeV. Present results are the first measurements of rescattering observables above 0.80 GeV. We present the measurements of the spin correlation parameterAookk(np). A longitudinally polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the longitudinally polarized Saclay frozen-spin proton target. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at neutron beam kinetic energies of 0.63, 0.88, 0.98 and 1.08 GeV. The data points cover the angular region from about 40° to 110° CM. The observed angular dependence ofAookk(np) at 0.63 GeV agree with the phase shift analysis predictions except at small angles.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

We present the first measurements of the double spin asymmetries A_NN and A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data were collected in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01<|t|<0.03 (GeV/c)^2. The measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin orientations.

At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/J\ulich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ for c.m. scattering angles between 30$^o$ and 90$^o$. Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . R pp at 16 GeV/ c is close to the val obtained for R in π − p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. Equality of R pp ( s , t ) and R π p ( s , t ) is expected if Pomeron exchange dominates and if factorization holds. The t -dependence of R at 16 GeV/ c is consistent with weak helicity flip.

The np and the pp analyzing powers A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d were measured simultaneously using the SATURNE II polarized deuteron beam at 0.744 and 0.794 GeV/nucleon. The results for the pp observables coincide with the free pp elastic scattering data. The np data cover the angular region 95°⩽ θ CM ⩽122°. Our results for A oono d (np) confirm the phase-shift analysis predictions but spin correlations A oonn d (np) and A oosk d (np) have never been measured in this energy region and will considerably affect the PSA solution. A polarized proton beam extracted from SATURNE II and the Saclay polarized proton target were used to determine the spin correlation parameter Aoosk and the rescattering observablesKos″ so; Dos″ok, Nos″sn, andNonsk at 1.80 and 2.10 GeV. The beam polarization was oriented perpendicular to the beam direction in the horizontal scattering plane and the target polarization was directed either along the vertical axis or longitudinally. Left-right and up-down asymmetries in the second scattering were measured. A check for the beam optimization with the beam and target polarizations oriented vertically provided other observables, of which results forDonon andKonno at 1.80, 1.85, 2.04, and 2.10 GeV are listed here. Compton scattering from the proton was investigated at s=6.9 (GeV/c)**2 and \t=-4.0 (GeV/c)**2 via polarization transfer from circularly polarized incident photons. The longitudinal and transverse components of the recoil proton polarization were measured. The results are in excellent agreement with a prediction based on a reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton and in disagreement with a prediction of pQCD based on a two-gluon exchange mechanism.

The angular distributions of the cross section, the proton analyzing power, and all proton polarization transfer coefficients of p→d elastic scattering were measured at 250 MeV. The range of center-of-mass angles was 10°–165° for the cross section and the analyzing power, and about 10°–95° for the polarization transfer coefficients. These are the first measurements of a complete set of proton polarization observables for p→d elastic scattering at intermediate energies. The present data are compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces (3NF), namely, the Tucson-Melbourne (TM) 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof (TM′) closer to chiral symmetry, and the Urbana IX model. Large effects of the three-nucleon forces are predicted. The inclusion of the three-nucleon forces gives a good description of the cross section at angles below the minimum. However, appreciable discrepancies between the data and predictions remain at backward angles. For the spin observables the predictions of the TM 3NF model deviate strongly from the other two 3NF models, which are close together, except for Kyy′. In the case of the analyzing power all 3NF models fail to describe the data at the upper half of the angular range. In the restricted measured angular range the polarization transfer coefficients are fairly well described by the TM′ and Urbana IX 3NF models, whereas the TM 3NF model mostly fails. The transfer coefficient Kyy′ is best described by the Urbana IX but the theoretical description is still insufficient to reproduce the experimental data. These results call for a better understanding of the spin structure of the three-nucleon force and very likely for a full relativistic treatment of the three-nucleon continuum.

Precise measurements of deuteron vector and tensor analyzing powers Ayd, Axx, Ayy, and Axz in d−p elastic scattering were performed via 1H(d→,d)p and 1H(d→,p)d reactions at three incoming deuteron energies of Edlab=140, 200, and 270 MeV. A wide range of center-of-mass angles from ≈10° to 180° was covered. The cross section was measured at 140 and 270 MeV at the same angles. These high precision data were compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces. Three-body interactions representing a wide range of present day models have been used: the Tucson-Melbourne 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry, the Urbana IX model, and a phenomenological spin-orbit ansatz. Large three-nucleon force effects are predicted, especially at the two higher energies. However, only some of them, predominantly dσ/dΩ and Ayd, are supported by the present data. For tensor analyzing powers the predicted effects are in drastic conflict to the data, indicating defects of the present day three-nucleon force models.

Final results for total cross section differences Δσ T and Δσ L measured with a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target are presented. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 11 energies between 0.63 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ T and at 9 energies between 0.312 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ L . The results are compared with measurements at PSI and LAMPF as well as with Δσ L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments at the ANL-ZGS. The present results together with the corresponding pp data allow to determine two of the three imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I = 0.
