The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K − p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K − p → K − p, K − p → K 0 n , K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Σ ± π ∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K − p → Σ 0 π 0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ ± π ∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ ± lifetimes have also been obtained ( τ Σ − = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10 −10 sec, τ Σ + = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10 −10 sec).

The polarization parameter P has been measured for elastic π + p, K + p and pp scattering at 45 GeV/c. Four-momentum transfer ranges from −0.08 to −1.1 (GeV/) 2 for pp, and from −0.08 to −0.9 (GeV/) 2 for π + p and K + p. The energy dependence of the polarization P ( t ) in π + p and in K + p above 6 GeV/c incident momentum is compatible with interference between pomeron and Regge poles. On the other hand, the polarization in p p elastic scattering decreases faster than ordinary Regge model predictions. This result can be explained by interference between non flip and flip amplitudes of the pomeron, leading to negative values for the polarization.

The spin rotation sf R in pp and π + p elastic scattering at 45 GeV/c has been measured at the Seppukhov accelarator, for z . sfnc ; t |; ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 (GeV/) 2 . The results are presented, together with previous R measurements at lower energies. The equality of the values for R in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering, within the experimental errors, is a test of factorization of the residues in the pomeron exchange.

We report final results on the polarization parameter P in elastic scattering of π − , K − and antiprotons at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum. The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.

We report our first measurements of the polarization in the elastic scattering of negative pions from polarized protons at an incident pion momentum of 40 GeV/ c . The momentum-transfer region covered was 0.08 < | t | < 1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The angular distribution of the polarization exhibits a first minimum of ∼ − 5% and the well-known zero around t ≈ − 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The energy variation of the first minimum (at around t = − 0.2) may be expressed in a simple form, P avr = −(0.48±0.06) s −0.52±0.05 .

We present the first measurements of the double spin asymmetries A_NN and A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data were collected in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01<|t|<0.03 (GeV/c)^2. The measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin orientations.

First data are presented for the polarized-target asymmetry in the reaction π+p→π+pγ at an incident pion energy of 298 MeV. The geometry was chosen to maximize the sensitivity to the radiation of the magnetic dipole moment μΔ of the Δ++(1232 MeV). A fit of the asymmetry in the cross section d5σ/dΩπ dΩγ dk as a function of the photon energy k to predictions from a recent isobar-model calculation with μΔ as the only free parameter yields μΔ=1.64(±0.19expΔ,±0.14 theor)μp. Though this value agrees with bag-model corrections to the SU(6) prediction μΔ=2μp, further clarifications on the model dependence of the result are needed, in particular since the isobar model fails to describe both the cross section and the asymmetry at the highest photon energies.

Measurements of the polarization in pp elastic scattering have been made at 5.15 GeV/c over the range −t=0.2 to 1.8 (GeV/c)2. The data are compared with a Regge-pole model, and with the diffraction model of Durand and Lipes in which the absorptive part of the pp interaction is derived from the electromagnetic form factor of the proton. The latter model reproduces the t dependence of the experimental data in a qualitative way.

In an experiment at the Argonne Zero-Gradient Synchrotron we have measured values of the polarization parameter P(t) in the elastic scattering of negative pions, positive pions, positive kaons, and protons on protons at several incident laboratory momenta from 2.50 to 5.15 GeVc, and for values of the momentum transfer variable −t from 0.2 to 2.0 (GeVc)2. The final results from p−p elastic scattering presented here extend our knowledge of the polarization to much larger values of −t than the results of previous measurements. Outstanding features revealed by these polarization data include (1) the development of a dip at about −t=0.7 (GeVc)2, with (2) a substantial secondary peak at larger values of −t and (3) the gradual diminution of the maximum polarization with increasing energy. It is possible to fit the t dependence of the experimental results with a simple model. The energy dependence of the polarized cross sections is also discussed.

Measurements of the pp spin correlation coefficients Axx, Ayy, and Axz and analyzing power Ay for pp elastic scattering at 197.8 MeV over the angular range 4.5°–17.5° have been carried out. The statistical accuracy is approximately ±0.01 for Amn and ±0.004 for Ay, while the corresponding scale factor uncertainties are 2.4% and 1.3%, respectively. The experiment makes use of a polarized hydrogen gas target internal to a proton storage ring (IUCF Cooler) and a circulating beam of polarized protons. The target polarization (Q=0.79) is switched in sign and in direction (x,y,z) every 2 s by reversing a weak guide field (about 0.3 mT). The forward-scattered protons are detected in two sets of wire chambers and a scintillator, while recoil protons are detected in coincidence with the forward protons by silicon strip detectors placed 5 cm from the proton beam. The background rate from scattering by the walls of the target cell is (0.2±0.2)% of the good event rate. Analysis methods and comparisons with pp potential models and pp partial wave analyses are described.

This work presents π+ data at the pion kinetic energies 117, 130, 139, 155, 169, 180, 193, 218, 241, and 267 MeV and π− data at 87, 117, 193, and 241 MeV, covering an angular range of 50°<~θc.m.<~180° at the higher energies and 90°<~θc.m.<~180° at the lower energies. Unique features of the spectrometer acceptance were employed to reduce systematic errors. The polarization parameter in proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at an incident momentum of 7.9 GeV/ c and four-momentum transfers in the range 0.9 < | t | < 6.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 using a high intensity unpolarized proton beam incident on a polarized proton target. The angle and momentum of the forward scattered protons were measured with a magnet spectrometer and scintillation counter hodoscopes and the angle of the recoil proton was measured using similar hodoscopes. A clean separation between the elastic scattering from free hydrogen and that coming from inelastic interactions and from interactions with complex nuclei in the target was obtained. The polarization shows substantial structure rising from zero at | t | = 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 to a maximum at | t | = 1.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 and then falling to zero at | t | = 2.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There is evidence of a further peak at | t | = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Above | t | = 3.25 (GeV/ c ) 2 the polarization is small and consistent with zero. A comparison of these data with data obtained at other beam momenta shows that the polarization parameter has a strong momentum dependence.

The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

Angular distributions of recoil-proton polarization in elastic π±p scattering were measured at 523-, 572-, and 689-MeV incident pion kinetic energy. Polarization measurements were made by observing the azimuthal asymmetry in the subsequent scattering of recoil protons in large carbon-plate spark chambers. Typical strong variation of the polarization with pion scattering angle near the πp diffraction minima was observed. Since existing opinion favors a D13 resonance at 600 MeV, a phase-shift analysis was attempted in order to confirm the existence and parity of this resonance. Available πp total and differential cross sections, these polarization data, and some possible restrictive assumptions related to the 600-MeV resonance were used in the analysis. Though the polarization results aided significantly in restricting the number of acceptable phase-shift sets, still, many plausible and qualitatively different sets were found.
