The differential cross sections for π + p elastic scattering at0.6, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, GeV/ c for π - p at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 GeV/ c , for K - p at 1.2, 1.8, 2.6 GeV/ c and for K - p at 0.9, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.6 GeV/ c have been measured with an overall accuracy ofthe order of 1 to 2% in an electronics experiment over the angular region corresponding to momentum transfer t between 0.0005 and 0.10 GeV 2 . Making use of the interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear interaction, we have determined the magnitude and sign of the real part of the scattering amplitude near t = 0. The K ± p real parts have been used in a dispersion relation to derive the value of the KNΛ coupling constant.

Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of negative kaons on protons are presented for 13 incident laboratory momenta between 1094 MeV/c and 1377 MeV/c. The data show the characteristic forward diffraction-like peak and backward dip and are adequately described in shape by certain published partial-wave analyses of the N system.

We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

The elastic scattering of 300-Mev negative pions from hydrogen was studied with the aid of a hodoscopic system with pulse-fed counters. Equation (1) gives the angular distribution for the elastic scattering under the hypothesis that the fundamental contribution to the scattering comes from the S and P waves.

Differential cross sections have been measured for π − p elastic scattering at laboratory momenta in the range 1.2 to 3.0 GeV/ c for the c.m. range 0.97 > cos θ ∗ > −0.98 . The corresponding mass range is 1.78 to 2.56 GeV/ c 2 . The data was obtained from a counter experiment in which the scattered pions and protons were detected in coincidence by arrays of scintillation counters.

Absolute π±p elastic scattering differential cross sections have been measured at five incident pion energies between 87 and 139 MeV. An active target of scintillator material (CH1.1) was used to detect recoil protons in coincidence with scattered pions. Pions were detected at forward angles between 27 and 98°c.m. where the low-energy recoil protons stop in the target. The cross sections, typically 5–10% lower than phase shift predictions for π+p and 10–20% lower for the π−p cross sections, are consistent with earlier measurements by this group.

We report the results of the investigation of 18 500 frames of π+p interactions in the Brookhaven 20-in. bubble chamber at an incident energy of 900 MeV. It is found that single-pion production proceeds almost entirely through formation of the N33* isobar. The production mechanism of the N33* is analyzed in terms of its spin density matrix. Comparison is made with Stodolsky and Sakurai's ρ-exchange model and with the absorptive peripheral model.

The Berkeley 15-in. hydrogen bubble chamber was used to investigate π+−p interactions at 600 MeV. There were 1738 good events, of which 71.9±0.8% were elastic. Partial waves up to at least D52 are required to fit the elastic angular distribution. The inelastic events were almost entirely single-pion production. The ratio (p+0)(n++) was found to be 5.5±0.8 which agrees well with 4.9 predicted by the (32, 32) pion-nucleon isobar model of Olsson and Yodh. It is also consistent with 6.5 predicted by Sternheimer and Lindenbaum. The pion momentum spectra and the π−π Q-value distributions also support the Olsson and Yodh model. Thus the (32, 32) pion-nucleon isobar is apparently the principal mechanism for single-pion production at 600 MeV. Angular distributions for the single-pion-production data are presented.

The differential elastic scattering cross sections for negative pions on ; protons were measured at incident momenta of 1.51, 2.01, and 2.53 Bev/c with ; emphasis on the angular region outside the diffraction peak. The purpose of the ; experiment was to examine the behavior of the largeangle differential elastic ; cross section as a function of energy from the energy of the highest known ; resonance in the pion-nucleon system into the region where the total. cross ; sections appear to be approaching an asymptotic value. The experiment was ; performed at the Bevatron, using a luminescent chamber system to photograph the ; tracks of the scattered pion and the recoil proton from a liquid hydrogen target. ; A total of 2412 elastic scatterings were analyzed at 1.51 Bev/c, 1300 events at ; 2.01 Bev/c, and 1080 events at 2.53 Bev/c. From the existing data it may be ; noted that the backward bump, which has a maximum height of 2.1 mb/sr at 900 Mev ; and 1.1 mb/sr at 1020 Mev, is down to 0.4 mb/sr at 1.51 Bev/c (1.37 Bev), and is ; not present at 2.01 or 2.53 Bev/c. The angular distributions behind the ; diffraction peak at 2.01 and 2.53 Bev/c are rougly constant, decreasing from 0.18 ; mb/sr at 2.01 Bev/c to 0.125 mb/sr at 2.53 Bev/c. Although the data can be taken ; to suggest some oscillatory structure in this region, they are not inconsistent ; with an isotropic distribution that might be interpreted as evidence for an S-; wave scattering behind the diffraction peak. K−−p interactions in the Columbia-BNL 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber were studied at nine momenta from 594 to 820 MeVc. The results for elastic-scattering and zero-prong-plus-V0 events are presented here. Differential cross sections are given for the K−p, K¯0n, and Λπ0 final states. A fit to the K¯N channels was obtained which shows the effects of a 32− resonance at 1701 MeV. This energy is appreciably displaced from the peak in the inelastic cross section.

The elastic differential cross section for the scattering of negative pions by hydrogen was measured at laboratory-system pion kinetic energies of 230, 290, 370, and 427 Mev. The elastically scattered pions were detected by a counter telescope which discriminated against recoil protons and inelastic pions on the basis of range. Differential cross sections were obtained at nine angles for each energy and were fitted by a least-squares program to a series of Legendre polynomials. At the three higher energies, D waves are required to give satisfactory fits to the data. The real parts of the forward-scattering amplitudes calculated from this experiment are in agreement with the predictions of dispersion theory. The results of this experiment, in conjunction with data from other pion-nucleon scattering experiments, support the hypothesis of charge independence at these higher energies.

An investigation of π−+p elastic scattering, made in a liquid propane bubble chamber, is reported. Identification of events is made on the basis of kinematics. The problem of contamination by pion scattering from protons bound in carbon is considered in some detail; it is shown that the latter requires a correction of only 4±2.5% of the total number of events. The angular distribution is presented. It shows a large diffraction peak at small angles and an approximately isotropic plateau over the backward hemisphere. The forward peak is fitted to a black-sphere diffraction pattern with a radius of (1.08±0.06)×10−13 cm. The total elastic cross section is found to be σe=10.1±0.80 mb.

The differential cross section for π ± p elastic scattering below 2 GeV/ c has been measured at small forward pion angles by an electronics experiment. The interference effects observed between the Coulomb and the nuclear interaction have been used to determine the magnitude and sign of the real parts of the π ± p forward scattering amplitude. The latter are compared to the values predicted by the dispersion relations.
